I really liked how they tackled Kazuma being a former defence attorney during the first trial against him: ordering the defense to cross-examine the defendant, then pointing out those holes in his testimony himself to make the defendant seem guilty, that felt really clever to me.
@HyLion
@HyLion Жыл бұрын
This exactly. That first testimony in DSG2-4 was very clever. Usually, the prosecutor's tactics are to restrict the flow of information so the defense has to work twice as hard to obtain it, but Kazuma, being a defense attorney himself, comes up with a crazy Phoenix-esque theory using the contradictions in the testimony to support it as a way to prove the defendant's guilt.

@@HyLion Yes but [spoilers]: It's kinda ruined when you learn/remember that Kazuma *knew* that Jigoku recruited him as exchange student assassin to kill Gregson in the first place. So Kazuma had every reason to know that Jigoku was likely to kill Gregson if Kazuma himself refused (which he did in the end). So Kazuma pretending like there was no other explanation but Barok for Gregson dying is kinda sus once you know the full story. Way to restrict the flow of information, Kazuma ...
@HyLion
@HyLion Жыл бұрын
@@l.n.3372SPOILERS: Actually, to the very end Kazuma defended his theory that Van Zieks killed Gregson on Fresno Street. Even after admitting to being with Gregson on the ship, he still insisted that what happened was that Gregson failed to kill Jigoku and the Reaper (who he believed to be Van Zieks) killed him in an act of revenge (This too is another reference to him being a defense attorney, since he sticks to his theory despite overwhelming odds but I digress). I think Kazuma genuinely believed his assassin exchange mission and Gregson's murder were unrelated. I mean, why wouldnt he? Until the last trial day, he had no idea Jigoku could even carry the body or fire a shot without the crew listening, so the thought that Jigoku did anything sounds like nonsense until you have the bigger picture
@l.n.3372
@l.n.3372 Жыл бұрын
@@HyLion Spoilers: That's not really Kazuma being wise as a defense attorney tho. Quite the opposite. That's him ignoring the common sense argument (that the assassination mission had something to do with Gregson dying) and ignoring this in the face of evidence that van Zieks was innocent to simultaneously insist he had to be at fault. It's Kazuma being biased more than anything else. Remember that van Zieks has no motive to murder Gregson, and a prosecutor must provide a motive. If van Zieks was the true Reaper, then he wouldn't target the innocent anyway. Killing Gregson would be breaking the former pattern of the Reaper. For Barok to seemingly target Gregson breaks the pattern cuz Gregson was never on trial by said Reaper. So Kazuma is already stretching his own BS to accuse Barok of being the Reaper who broke his own pattern to kill an innocent man. Now, Kazuma tried to justify this by saying Barok wanted Gregson dead because Gregson was onto Barok as the Reaper. But ... Barok had years and years to kill Gregson if that was the case. Barok even took a 5 year break during which nobody died to the Reaper curse. And Gregson was obviously alive for those years plus the time when Barok returned to prosecutor. Gregson only died when ... Kazuma regained his memories and Jigoku arrived. It's pretty clear that this is the outlier. Kazuma tried to justify this by saying that van Zieks is the Reaper and he killed Gregson when Gregson caught the Reaper - but we also know that's not true. Kazuma himself is blinded into thinking that van Zieks is the Reaper, that he'd never considered any alternative possibility. Kazuma is basically going in one track minded like such. "Barok is the Reaper so he must be a killer so he must have killed Gregson cuz Reaper bad, and I need to avenge my father." A better real world defense attorney would go in thinking "hmm, there's reasonable doubt here. Especially because I myself am aware that Gregson was my own target for assassination. Jigoku hired me to kill Gregson. And what do you know, Gregson only died when Jigoku arrived in Europe mere hours after I spoke to Gregson on the boat. What a coincidence." Kazuma was the last person to speak with Gregson alive, remember. Kazuma conveniently excuses himself from being a suspect when by all means, he SHOULD have been under suspicion from the start too. The only reason Kazuma isn't a suspect too is because Jigoku and Kazuma tell nobody about the student exchange assassination (aka withholding evidence). Plus the fact that Gina finds the metal box from the street urchins (which has the tip of the katana embedded in the metal) - thereby showing that Kazuma was on board the ship the night beforehand. Kazuma also has NO evidence that Gregson left that ship alive either, since Kazuma never saw Gregson depart the ship. Kazuma is hiding the truth, withholding evidence, and keeping the defense in the dark here. Kazuma goes into case 4 and 5 kinda unwilling to admit he's wrong because he insists upon van Zieks being the killer. It's all about revenge against Barok so he's unable to actually be objective here anymore. If he WAS being objective, then he'd simultaneously have to admit that Jigoku and him were secretly part of the assassination mission. And that Gregson was planned to die as early as a year beforehand when Jigoku himself asked Kazuma on this student exchange. But Kazuma told NOBODY about this plan, meaning that Gregson could have died at any point in time and Kazuma did nothing to warn anyone or prevent it. And before you say "but Kazuma lost his memories" I'd remind you that Kazuma didn't tell anyone in October, November and December before his so called death in January. And he still didn't tell anyone for like 10 days in October before Gregson died in November either. That's 3 whole months in the previous year plus 1 week in the present day when Kazuma had his memories, and Kazuma tells nobody about the student exchange. If you KNOW that someone has hired you to assassinate a target and you tell nobody, you're still guilty by means of association and culpability of the no responsive bystander. Kazuma did nothing for months to prevent a death he knew was planned.

@@l.n.3372 Bro cooked, but I agree. Kazuma was too emotional and didn't want to see reason, all he wanted is to avenge his father. That's why he ignored obvious hints and was shocked when Jigoku was pressured. At least he kinda came back to his senses after Ryu slapped him.

its crazy how his original theme, samurai with a mission, evokes this feeling of triumph, justice, and faith, it's the epitome of kazuma's strength and extreme faith he has as a defense lawyer; this one seems to have the opposite effect, for me personally it evokes this feeling of dread, and it really accentuates his "dark" side, his unquenchable desire for revenge that he'll stop at nothing to get at van zieks. it feels almost corrupted in a way, just like it feels like kazuma had been. this really just highlights how powerful and scary kazuma can be at times, especially on the prosecution stand. really this song breaks my heart tbh, it makes me miss the original kazuma,, the one who really did die on the boat to britain

I think part of the dread comes from the Victorian British and Japanese vibes mixing together in the theme - the Victorian part kind of sounds like something you'd hear in a gothic horror movie about ghosts or vampires, so it creeps you out after a while.

At the beginning, we see Kazuma as a paragon of good at best and just Ryunosuke's best friend at worst; throughout the first case he always tells Ryunosuke to believe in himself and that he'll find a way to the truth. We continue to see him this way until his unfortunate 'accident', with him wanting to consult Ryunosuke about the dancer (forgot the name).But then the truth is revealed that he wasn't coming to London for noble reasons at all, but for vengeance. His theme in the first case even displays this; 'A Samurai on A Mission'.. but we weren't actually told what that mission WAS. Which is why facing against him can be heartbreaking; he, in many ways, is still Ryunosuke's best friend.

I really love how they handled Ryunosuke and Kazuma in contrast to Nick and Mia. Both had super helpful mentors who were brave and perfect and hot. Both die. Both vow to follow in their footsteps. Nick knows what he has to do, and still has Mia's ghost to help him. However, Ryunosuke doesn't know what to do. He has to do what he THINKS is what Kazuma wanted maybe??? And also he mentioned some cryptic stuff that makes Ryu think that he might not know what Kazuma really wanted. And then Kazuma is alive, so now Ryu has to find a new driving force. You can't really carry on the will of the dead if they're alive still. So where does that leave him? And it turns out that his friend's ideals may not have been as noble as he thought they were. So now Ryu has to grapple with his entire self worth being built on these rotted foundations, and has to decide for himself what HE wants and what HE thinks is noble and just.

kazumas ideals arent less noble once you find out why he wants to go to britain, hes still the same morally righteous person he was in 1-1, to the best of his ability, even in his extremely emotional state during 2-3 ~ 2-5. just because ryuunosuke has found a passion in the truth of his own, without following kazumas footsteps, doesnt mean that its because kazuma is morally reprehensible or grey. from kazumas perspective, it could have only been van zieks. furthermore, he never intended to kill anyone like a lot of people seem to think, he both says it multiple times in the game and its implied in the text that he finds such an idea abhorrent.

@@thegreatchipman He never said such a thing, he repeatedly stated specifically that he never intended to kill anyone. If youre referring to that bit at the end, it reads more the confession of an emotional breakdown than one of an actual assassination attempt. Not only by the situation itself, but also how he words it. My rough translation of the original text: "In the last moments of my encounter with the inspector, for a brief moment, less than the blink of an eye... I did indeed harbor a desire to kill that man." Now, that does read more like a feeling in the heat of the moment, not one you necessarily have to feel okay with, much less plan to act on. He feels guilty just for feeling that way for one brief moment, I don't know how that makes him a murderer when most people would have feelings like the ones he had in such a situation. Also, if he did intend to kill Gregson in that moment when swinging his katana, you'd expect the well trained swordsman to at least hit his target in some form, when he has proven his ability to cut Auchi's hair tie from across the courtroom without cutting his hair, but no lacerations were found on Gregson's body. Which makes the swing of his sword look more as an emotional outburst without the intent to actually kill, or an attempt at intimidating the detective into talking.

Tbh I think it feels right. Spoilers: Kazuma wore that sabre as the masked apprentice. Barok probably gave it to him during those months, and Kazuma used it to fight off those thugs who constantly attacked Barok thinking him to be the Reaper. It shows - symbolically - how much Kazuma is influenced by his mentor (Barok) in both fighting styles and as a prosecutor. And then, when he gets Karuma back, he almost immediately breaks the tip in a blinded rage/vengeance when he almost took a life. It's also symbolic: his soul is broken and he's lost his way. He gave Karuma to Ryunosuke at the end to protect it for him until he's ready to accept it back. And it's also Kazuma symbolically deciding to keep the sabre, London, his mentor, and his prosecutor path.

Red Moon, there's a guy called u-tan that pretty much transcribed every soundtrack of the games, here's his channel: kzfaq.info/love/kA-IOn9mx0MPtMu4odd6jA and also the video: solo: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jMtiaZtm3b-7epc.html multiple instruments: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sMxkZbp12b7Ic4E.html if you're looking for a really high quality 300dpi pdf or a mcsz file of it, i'm afraid i got nothing of the sort (btw i'm looking for a midi file of the soundtrack so if u can make a midi out of it please tell me)

I would just like to point this out cause I don’t think anyone else would notice this. Kazuma’s objection in the final case is different than his objection in the first case.

00:00 Flashback of your grim mistake at the living room, where the fateful incident takes place 00:09 Your dad, gripping tightly his speckled belt, slowly marching to your room. 00:21 Your dad is now on the second floor, His footstep is louder than any footstep you've ever heard, your fate is impending. 00:34 All of it was silence, just nothing until... 00:37 Your door was opened by a great force. There stand the Reaper himself holding his "Death Scythe". You're terrified, and your soul trembled at that very moment 00:43 You've prepared for this, After all. You have braced yourself for the great pain you must endure. You bent yourself, showing your very weakness to the Reaper, and there he goes. 00:47 You are tortured almost immediately, the pain are unbearable, the tears bursted almost instantly, the scream of your damned soul was heard by your Angel, your mom. but alas, she just stood there, knowing this is for your sake. Few moments of this torture feels like forever, but you do not resist, you know this is your fault. You cannot endure the pain, but you knew when you fight it, it became even worse than before. 01:12 You thought about what you could've done, what you could do to make your fate better, what can you do to fix this mistake you've made. It was all a regret on the inside and regret amounts to nothing in the end. 01:24 The tortures kept going, but somehow, the pain are slowly fades away as you remembered how many times you've been tortured like this. You know something needed to be done and you know whats this "something" exactly. 01:38 You braced yourself once again, preparing for the greatest change in your entire life. 01:51 your hand was shivering. but at last, you have done it... 01:53 you perfectly catched the belt. You decided the pain in your hand will be the last of it. You made a sharp, and piercing eye contact to your Dad. He was shocked, but somehow seems like he was expecting this. 02:02 You said you have enough with this torture, but your Dad said this is for your sake. The battle began. The argument filled the entire room, the 2 souls are filled with blazing fury, not even the Angel could stop this Hellish fight. But one thing you said, ended all of this war of words. 02:29 "I have realized my mistake, it was a very grim one. But i shall promise- no, i shall swear to my own life i will become a better self. I will make both of you proud at the end of your days, I will become the best child you could've had, and I will only allow myself show up infront of your door as a successful man. you have my word" 02:41 your Dad was pleasantly surprised, he dropped the Death Scythe, your mom shocked in proud, tears are forming in her eyes, All of you then hugged together and you continued your journey with that one vow you always carried on your back. The end

*Spoilers for DGS 2 (obviously)* I really wish they pushed Asougi's character more. I think it would have been a lot more effective, had he been almost completely consumed by his unjust hatred of van Zieks, to the point of denial. They did go to that direction, just not enough in my opinion. This theme kicks ass though. He's still a Samurai with a mission, but now his mission is revenge, and that is reflected more in the track than in the game.

His mission was kind of always revenge, he was sent to Britain to assassinate Gregson. Although he actually never intended to kill anyone.

Looking back on this comment, idk I think letting him be fully consumed kinda ruins the nuance of his character. It’s tempting to see this case as Turnabout Goodbyes 2: Electric Boogaloo, but making Asougi further fit the mold of previous prosecutors who were also consumed by hatred (such as Manfred) takes away from his uniqueness. He’s not completely evil, and he wasn’t evil all along. He respects and encourages Naruhodo even while prosecuting. He’ll pursue the truth regardless of the costs, which is actually his downfall. He’s a great example of a morally grey character and a perfect example of character deconstruction.
