No tourists here in 1990, I visited in 2000 and it was full of tourists. Streets full of cars and motobikes, the girls looked fashionable. This country transformed so quickly. But there's something honest and beautiful about these old days that I wish to have experienced.

They truly rose from the ashes. Looking at Vietnam today, no one can imagine what they had to go through. In just 35 years, everything has changed so much. It's no wonder many people still think Vietnam is underdeveloped.

I was born in Cam Ranh Bay in 1974, moved to US in 1987 with family. This brings back lots of memories growing up. Kids back then didn’t even have proper shoes or slip on slippers to go school or to play soccer. Today, it’s AMAZING to see how fast Vietnam has developed within only 35 years. Much love & respect to the people. I can’t wait to come back visit my beautiful motherland someday.

Yall have to understand, things changed so much that I can't imagine the hardship that my father went through when he was my age. Of course, I believe his story, dad lore is always interesting to hear. For reference, he grew up on rice fields and lust green grass of the countryside. I grew up in the sea of concrete and urban land. The definition of "struggle" itself is not the same for both of us. for him it's doing the most to survive, financially stable... for me it's utilizing everything to be better prepared for adulthood. In fact, my youngest sister who is 7 years younger than me also have generational difference. The day I said "back in MY days" I legit have to pause and ask myself if I'm getting old. As a child she enjoyed way more than what I had.

Although life after the war is difficult, the optimism and love of life of Vietnamese people has not changed❤

I am Vietnamese, born in the 70s of the last century, in the north, living in the countryside until 1990, then in Hanoi. The images are too familiar. A time of hunger and hardship but always want to remember, want to go back to memories, old nostalgia. A time of hunger and hardship but with my feeling when looking at each person, I see them happier with a bright smile, the people are thinner but healthy and agile. Just a need for clarification, despite all the embargoes imposed by the West following the 1975 unification war, Vietnam also experienced two wars with China and one with the Khmer Rouge. Following the liberation of Cambodia (or invasion as portrayed by the Western media), additional embargoes (even from China) were placed on Vietnam. We persevered and thrived.

Beautiful country. The footage shows many locations that is probably close to where my mom and dad were born back in the war, they grew up in villages within a few miles. The country was torn apart literally back then. My parent never got to stay near HN. My dad - due to the New Economic Movement, he left his family with hope to rebuild the country. My mom - due to her family moved back to Middle VN after the 75. They met back in the early 90s in Quang Ngai (yes, that's the province where the Pinkville incident happened), which is where I grew up. Though they grew up after the worst part of the war, the imprint the war left was immense. The country struggled after the war and went through nearly 20 years of what is now referred as "Thời Bao Cấp" - the Subsidy Period. When being asked, most of the adults that lived through it would probably describe this period as "Khổ".

Look like USSR but poorer, i was not born at this time,my grandparent not live in Vietnam at this point.They live in USSR,after 1991,the Soviet Union disintegrated,and they go back Vietnam,my Grandfather at this point is a tupolev pilots of VNA.I want to learn about my grandparents' time,even though they did not live in Vietnam between 1990-1991.But I can also imagine how they lived at this time.Thank You !

These were the most peaceful times after the wars that devastated our country and 1990, 2000, 2010 were the most peaceful times and focused on building and developing the country. If I had one wish, I would want it. Come back to this moment to feel it again

Đi học phải đi xin sách tập cũ kỹ để có mà học cái chữ, mỗi bửa cơm chan nước tương, ăn cơm với đường trắng, canh mồng tơi không còn quá xa lạ. Ngẫm nghĩ lại thấy cuộc sống khi ấy thật khó khăn tuy khổ cực nhưng vẫn vui vẻ lạc quan sống qua ngày. Hiện tại thì cuộc sống đã khá khắm hơn, không còn phải lo cái ăn cái mặc, hằng ngày phải đau đầu ngày mai mình sẽ ăn món gì, thèm món gì để không bị trùng lặp. Chổ nào bán ngon, chổ nào view đẹp,... Đến bây giờ Việt Nam đã thoát khỏi vòng vay cấm vận là một thành tựu to lớn nhất của dân tộc chúng ta. Thoát khỏi cái nghèo đói, đi lên từ đống đổ nát. Với tốc độ phát triển như hiện nay thì đến năm 2050 VN sẽ là quốc gia phát triển bắt kịp với nền tiên tiến của thế giới sau bao lâu năm dày vò bởi chiến tranh.

I was 7 yrs old in 1990 and this was my childhood. Exactly as I remembered. It's been so long ago that refreshing my memory is really nice. I left vn in 1995, and when I first came back in 2011, it was mostly unrecognizable. That first sight when I returned was memorable, so familiar yet unrecognizable.

1990 was my last year living and university studying in Ha Noi. I was 25! Already many ten years, unbelievable!

I was born in Ha Noi in 1991. At the age of 5 or 6, I also spent time in the rural area with my grandma. These scenes right here, whether it is the city or countryside, are very familiar to me because they deeply rooted in my childhood. Yeah we were broke back then because of the wars and the sanctions and all, but we have built and rebuilt this country again by working together, whether it is the city or countryside. And that, is the beauty of it. No matter how far we have progressed, history and culture will never be forgotten. Proud being a Vietnamese.

Im a viet, born and lived and is living in modern day vietnam, and to be frank, i've grown so accustomed to the industrilization and fast paced living style of western media that i've kinda became distant to my own home. I didnt act cocky or anything, its just i dont like going to my father's hometown during the holidays like i used to, i dont like the simple, traditional foods that i used to. Seeing this truly humble me. It might not be the perfect word to describe my feelings but its all i can think of. My parents are born in the 60s, but i was born in the late 2000s (crazy ik). So you can imagine the distance in how my parents and i perceive the world. Was born in Saigon, 2010. My Dad went through the Vietnam War, 1975 when he was only 6 months old. A part of the crashed babylift flight that killed nearly every child onboard of a US Air Force C-5, which crashed near RW 25L of Tân Sân Nhứt (Now Cảng hàng không quốc tế Tân Sân Nhất). My grandma was the volunteer of the flight, she sadly was killed. My Dad was adopted by Australians, but he left and went back to Saigon when he was 8 years old.

I managed to have a mind-blowing experience watching this documentary. Born in 2000s, I've always been wondering how my parents' and grands' life was back then, I'm just told that life was hard, poor and tough but it's difficult to imagine fully, this video is an excellent answer to my curious.

I was born in 2003 in Hanoi, move abroad for a period and return for highschool and uni, honestly it feel so distance yet so familiar some of the shot in Hanoi street was. Obviously the old car and the metal working mostly do away by the time i was conscious but the street and the worker looking no different then they are today. The city look alot more modern now and life becoming faster so to speak. In a way the old time feel more charming then it did now but that really just rose tinted glasses that im seeing it in the video, i enjoy my life now and i see it for the better.

I was born and raised in Berlin Germany but had the privilege to visit my home country almost every year. One of my fondest memories are the times when I was a little boy playing in our garden with my cousins in the late 90s. Yes our country was poor but I don’t know why, although materialistically speaking we didn’t have anything I felt like our people were happier. I was looking forward so much to coming back home every year and seeing the small changes. The changes went from small to huge and now my country is prosperous like never before. I am so proud of what my countrymen have went through and although I miss my old humble Vietnam, I look forward to the new modern and young Vietnam. 🇻🇳

Oh, my country when I was a child! A long time immersed in war, poverty and backwardness. The communist, subsidized economic system was a big mistake (like Cuba today). We realized that bad thing and tried to change, study well to escape poverty. This was the first stage of innovation to a market economy, so we learned English. And now, my country is developing rapidly, being a friend of America and Western countries and many other countries! Although it is not yet a rich country, life has improved a lot. Love Vietnam!

Hola, soy de Argentina, estuve hace unos dias en Hanoi. Puedo ver que muchas imagenes de la calle se mantienen aunque sean para el turista y otras son genuinamente. La vida sigue sucediendo en la calle. Antes de llegar vivi un año en Nueva Zelanda y aunque es muy estable y se gana buen sueldo en trabajos basicos, no hay vida en la calle. Ojala cuando Vietnam dentro de 20 se desarrolle aun mas, no pierdan su escencia y mantengan sus costumbres. Creo que vietnam mejoro gracias a que abrio su economia.... tambien estuve en Cuba y la diferencia es muy grande (dependen mucho del estado y viven peor que en 1990, ya que no tienen ayuda externa de rusia, poca inversion privada ni industria) . En el caso de vietnam hace falta mas precencia del estado, sobre todo para el transporte publico y bancarizar los comercios (por lo menos para el extranjero hay dificultades) . Pero si continuan en esta linea politica creo que dentro de 20 años estaran mucho mas desarrollados. En Argentina los cambios politicos, la deuda externa y las condiciones politicas que impone Estados Unidos (ya ni siquiera secretas) destruyen al pais cada vez mas. Me gustaria saber como es la relacion de Vietnam con sus paises vecinos como China y Tailandia
