For anyone wondering why that Magpie was attacking that kid, its because it is currently spring over here in Australia. Which means it is breeding season, magpies swoop people if we get too close to their nests and they attack us to protect their babies and eggs. Quick FYI for all the non-Australians watching. :)

I think they find kids an un-predictable threat so swoop them more often. Our neighbours kids get swooped in their backyard every year but the parents never get swooped. Plus you can befriend a magpie and it’ll swoop everyone but you. They are pretty intelligent.

They're really good at remembering faces, there used to be this one girl at my primary school who was on their hitlist and she would have to book it every single day of swooping season lest she get impaled by an angry bird. I feed the local ones around me, so I'm safe as long as I'm on my block. Everywhere else, I can hear boss music though. They also are good at mimicking sounds. One of them went viral during the mad bushfires earlier because it started copying the sirens.

The magpies on my street stare at me judgingly but I stare back to say “I am on my guard, but I am walking away from you, we should keep our distance” and it works, mostly magpie attack people because they can’t see their faces and don’t recognise it, if they don’t recognise it they will attack it. As said before they have good facial recognition, so if you’ve been a douche to a magpie it’ll remember that for most of it’s life.
