There's some truth that record labels and mediocre musicians need to ensure that high-effort artistry is less popular / less prioritized by fans compared to entertainment. Because clean-sounding poppy music that follows a formula is a lot easier to crank out 300 albums a year. When it comes to legitimate ARTISTS who can write artistic, intelligent lyrics; those are rare, and brilliancy cannot be manufactured. As far as regular fans who downplay Nas in 2023... there are a lot of so-called hip hop fans who DON'T KNOW SH*T ABOUT RAP. For example, I encountered someone on r/rap, the literal subreddit of rap, the place where you shouldn't even be if you aren't a legitimate rap fan, who said he can't name 5 Nas songs outside of Illmatic. You are not a rap fan, not even a beginner, if you don't know at least I Can, If I Ruled The World, One Mic, and Made You Look; because those are all part of the day 1 starter pack. Outside of that, people talk about The Message and Ether all the time; and Hate Me Now and Nas Is Like should be pretty well-known.
