It’s also a great concept because by working with what you have, you can really start to see where your limitations/bottlenecks are. And that lets you prioritize where your expenditures go first to get the most bang for your buck and sort the “want” from the “need”.

Definitely agree when starting out, you need to spred your dollar, to get capacity to be able to do different things rather than a few limited expensive tools.

Hello Mark. I watch your channel regularly with a happy smile and I have to say that not only are you my favorite Australian palette artist, you are actually one of the best in the field. You are authentic, have a good sense of humor and just say how it is without covering it up with blah blah. A very nice video with the core statement at all. JUST GET STARTED! - and how right you are! Several years ago I started looking at the whole palette community and for fun (and because I lacked a hobby ;-) ) I started making a small workshop out of my garage with a few small bills. In the meantime, I'm seriously considering switching my office job to part-time, because I've found that I prefer my time in the workshop instead sitting in a coffin office... and because I can earn good money there too... and I have more fun there ...and I'm much more balanced now...and it's not rocket science. A little common sense, a little caution and a dose of willpower... and the rest will come with time. Thank you so much for your videos, the time you put in, your inspirations (I hope it's not a drama that I recreated a thing or two from your ideas) and the courage to show people that they can do anything what they want... THEY JUST HAVE TO START IT!

Haha, you’re so right! I bought for thousands and thousands dollars of tools and made an entire workshop with workbench’s, frenh cleats, jiggs, charging stations, dust collection with out even having made anything at all. Luckily I ended up liking my new hobby. But it could have been a big waste of money I got caught in all these KZfaqrs using fency equipment i thought I needed them all

Being in business for 20 years and using the buy once cry once rule even in my shop doesn't work, new variant comes out a year later with more features anyway and if you wait to get the best you're missing out on projects you can tackle today. Mark I took your advice and Just. Got. Started. Here in Germany firewood has got very expensive. I have a greengrocer friend who gives me veg free sometimes. She also this week practically begged me to take 3 pallets with "Ht" on them so I know they are safe. Brought them back and proceeded to make two things - wood strips for projects and the rest is firewood! She gets rid of pallets, I get project wood and fire wood. Win. Win Win!

I’ve always dabbled with pallets here and there but I only really got into them properly during lockdown . 8x8 shed . Circular and mitre saw , palm sander , drills , pencil and roofing square . I made a heap of stuff mainly for the garden cos that’s where I spent 2020 and they’re still going strong now . Planters , decking , bbq table , compost grid etc . I now use them to make planters to sell and boy do they they sell . If anyone moans at me I just say I’m saving the planet from pallets going into land fill , helping others with the cost of living crisis as the local hardware stores sell them at unrealistic prices and it’s bloomin good for our mental health . Yes , that’s right it’s therapy ! I love the chase of hunting pallets ( I always ask permission at industrial estates ) choosing the right ones , hauling them home and ripping them down . When the lumber shelves are full I feel good and get straight to work . Clock watching never happens and when im in my workshop I just wish there was 48 hours in a day . Then there’s the sell , I love how people want my stuff ! I think the whole “pallet by a bin “to something saleable process is an art in itself . We all learn the hard way and have lots of wood to burn but when you get the knack for it it becomes addictive. The addiction becomes an obsession then you wonder Why it’s not your full time job . Hey Mark, I got the denailer - how right you are - maaaaate it's a game changer. I put my 76 year old mum on it (she loves being in the wood shed with me) and she loves it. I have the cheapo stuff as well and slowly saved for a carbetc planer as the first real expensive one. ALso a game changer. I've got another rule with my crippled hands so if I can find an electronic way of making life easier I will - hand tools are for people who have real working hands!! Love your video's. Getting my 1st real shop (garages in the past) when my house gets built (large garage 14'x32') and will be woodworking and teaching my grandkids, 8 in all what I know (which isn't much, but I enjoy what I do). I think I'll be getting some pallet wood (I've got a line on free pallets) to work on so your tip on the pneumatic gun to remove nails and the metal detector were spot on = I've added them to my wish list. House should be done in Aug 2023, and a new Saw Stop in also on my list (buy once cry once 🙂).

That is and has been my mantra the whole time. Not even buying a jig for my table, as a first project. Borrowing a sander and a jobsite saw. I currently have only bought two 36" f clamps, some glue, sandpaper, and going with tung oil (maybe the finish blend for now, just to get stuff complete. It's not bad sealer) and longest epoxy resin. No jointing, no jigs. Just until it's justified for the cost.

Excellent. I've been getting gear from auctions and second hand personal sales. It's a bit hit and miss. Last year I ended up with a boat, trailer, outboard, lathe and two compressors at one go. Occasionally it can be a disaster, like the large polisher that blew up when I turned it on. I do buy some new stuff too when absolutely needed. But the best buy was the old, (1970), Emco star multi machine. That has enabled me to make all the workbenches in the shop, some kitchen shelves and a guest bed. Just got to start selling something now and get that proper table saw. Cheers.

Another great video. I haven’t bought a Pneumatic Denailer yet, still using my two kids instead 😊 (unsure if a good investment, buy once cry once) still using my ezycut table saw (1960s) and I agree with Mark, old cast iron will last for years (the saw, not Mark), at 50 kangaroos well worth it. Likewise my drill press, J.S.Richardson Model E40 (1940s) not for the faint hearted if you need to move it, but at another 50 kangaroos who can complain. Great hobby, nothing more satisfying than making decorative firewood 😊

Great video mate! ...but I am that guy :P From day one I've pretty much bought once, and I can only think of two tools I have had to replace, sell or upgrade and that was my little Ryobi palm sander and jigsaws which got "tealed" after a few years of service :P I took nearly 5 years to get a bloody tablesaw for jeebuzz sake! :P But then I also started with your #1 Rule, and with the Handyman business I did very quickly pay off all my higher end purchases and didn't add anything until the old stuff was paid off *and* had a home. Hi new to your site. I love how straight talking you are, no BS it is refreshing to watch, and I understand being tight. I am from the South Yorkshire in the UK and people say Yorkshire folk have deep pockets and short arms. I sound like you would fit in well in Yorkshire. I do have some basic cheapo tools, and I really want to get building, thing is it is winter there and I don't have a workshop 🥶😫

When i watch your videos if feel like i can do it too =) thanks for sharing the content , just yesterday i dismantle 5 palets. i build myself that crowbar that you use. Anyway thanks again for posting this videos and beeing so optymistic
