I feel like they would make a good pair in an alternate universe if Fitz and Simmons never met. The writers initially intended the fifth season finale to be the series finale, when the show was renewed for a sixth, and seventh season, some of the cast had already moved on. When both seasons were filmed back to back, I guess, the writers decided to use Iain's availability mostly in the sixth season rather than the seventh.

Neil Mackenzie there’s always a fake out villain in the beginning of the season. Last season it was sarge, though it was a half fake out, I don’t know it was complicated. This season though there was never really any other villain, it was the chronicoms, then Nate, then the chronicoms and Nate. I guess the fake out villain would be Kora.
