In this video we disassemble, clean, repair the Anti-Reverse, lubricate and reassemble a Daiwa AS4050 spinning reel. The anti-reverse repair replaces the original rubber part with a steel spring and washer.

Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.

If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me Rick48cj2a@yahoo.com
I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his KZfaq videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

You might not be aware that with your ultrasonic cleaner that you can simply fill the main tank with water only, but in your basket like you said you used diesel fuel first , then a soap solution, you can use most any glass jar put the parts that you want to use say the diesel for heavy cleaning and another jar for your soap solution not so dirty parts or second cleaning, just be sure the jars can be lidded and sealed, you can do multiple things or reels in different stages , if you care to and not keep changing out your main tank which you can still use for bigger parts in the basket. Hopefully it helps you save some time and money on your solvents

That Daiwa AS4050 reminds me of the Kmart SS40 you did the video on over a year ago. There are lots of similarities they both share.

Rick, I truly appreciate how you can repair what seems to be irre irreparable but knowing these Apollo reels pretty well I question if it is worth the effort. I did a bush fix on my Apollo 7050 and it works fine but I absolutely never intend to use it because it’s just a bad reel. Now it I only owned two or three reels and this was one of them I probably try my best to fix it. All I’m saying and given that is not my situation I don’t like the reel and never intend to use it. This Apollo you’re working on has one of those large clips holding the rotor to the housing. You know how very much I dislike reels like this. The Daiwa 1500C is also like this and I dislike that one too! Still your ability to bring back the dead is truly amazing. Your spring fix is far better than mine so and I can hear you laughing, could you make me a spring for my 7050? It would probably need to be somewhat larger so I’ll call you later when I’m back home. Oh, that NIB 486 that I got before Christmas is waiting for me when I get home. It is definitely a reel for my collection as I have two others for fishing. You are just too proud of your new ultrasonic cleaner. I just about can’t stand it as you are so pleased with yourself! LOL. I’m kidding of course. You did a great job with making that spring. I think there will be a lot of folks interested in how you did this. I guess I don’t quite get the joy out of repairing a reel like you do particularly ones like these Apollo reels. Great job as always even on a reel I don’t like. It was also fascinating to see your use of your new ultrasonic cleaner. I probably won’t ever get one since I work on far fewer reels than you and don’t have to produce content for KZfaq. This was a very good video Rick!- Chris
