Always want to put out the fire with water first, especially in a pine (coniferous) forest. The roots can actually catch on fire and start a forest fire.

If there are any dead roots exposed in the hole, it's a possibility. It's typically best to douse it thoroughly with water before burying it. But I think he's okay.
