Love authentic restoration and not boring, open space 'modernized' crap. Each distinct room a delightful banquet. Thank you for the video.

*All those open candles (and working fireplaces) in an 1884 residence w/ zero fire-suppression systems makes me anxious. But what a meticulous and stunning vision and renovation.*

I've been inside the Dakota visiting a friend. It's a horrible SIN to modernize the interiors of any apartment in that building. The craftsmanship that went into that building both inside and outside is beyond amazing!

"A Sheik's friend in the Olympic tower". Interesting that you point this out. Trump's triplex in Trump Tower, interiors by Angel Donghia featured in Architural Digest. It was nice, dark chocolate, bronze and looked like an airport lounge from 1983. At some point Trump visited a "Middle Easterner" who lived in the Olympic Tower and this in turn resulted in a massive remodeling of the apartment into a mix of Saudi Arabia chic coupled with bad Las Vegas casino mob boss , an orgy of garish gold rococo on every surface. This style naturally appeals to corrupt Saudi and other middle eastern dictators, Russian oligarchs and Trump. People who don't have money think that this is what wealth looks like. Back to the Dakota.

But the apartment is also very 'nouveau riche', nothing really valuable inside (in terms of furniture. paintings and decorations). It is not antique, more like Anthropologie. People who don't have taste think that this is what taste looks like

In fact, is looks exactly like what 'middle eastern dictators and Russian oligarchs' think wealth looks like.

I like to call the style you've just described as "Goomba Chic." Use that for however you think it has value. BTW, I'm not sure which is worse, "Goomba Chic" or "Concentration Camp Minimalist", you know, the sort favored by way too many celebrities where everything is sterilized, empty, and bleached into death? Yes. Back to the Dakota, and the genius of Peter Murino and such designers....

My grandparents considered buying an apartment at the Dakota in the 1950s when he was representing the Air Force at the United Nations. unfortunately, they did not do so. They retired to Gloucester County, Virginia after his last posting in New York.

Thanks so much for posting this! I’ve admired the Whittle apartment since I first saw it in AD back in the 1980’s. I may be wrong on this, but I recall Mr. Whittle owning 2 apartments in the Dakota, both done by Peter Marino. The first apartment (the ‘golden’ one) was before he was married. The second and much larger one was for his new family. It too was featured in a decorating magazine - either AD or House & Garden a few years after the first one. The decor was similar but different as I recall. I’ve searched the internet for pics of the ‘golden’ decor apartment, but have had little success other than a couple of images, both of which are in your great video. I may be misremembering, but I do recall seeing 2 apartments. Thanks for doing this. LOVE the floor plans.

If I were rolling in dough, I most assuredly would NOT decorate this Dakota apartment like what I just saw. The fifties modern stuff doesn't belong in here! I like some of what they've done with it, but there is a great deal that does nothing to enhance the 1880's grandeur of the rooms. Oh, how I wish we could see some beautifully restored slides of what this apartment looked like in the 1880's!! The only person I would hire to design and decorate the interior of this apartment, if it were mine, is John Saladino.

I agree. Those clunky condensers are so old and decrepit looking and add shabbiness to the outside. Only ducted aircon should be allowed in an official heritage-listed site. I am sure it could be successfully retrofitted.

My cousin approached the local woollen mill ( one of the last left in the nation) to adapt their checkered blankets to curtain her old timber house at high altitude where it got very cold in winter. They were happy to oblige and she loved the result. Vintage manufactories will often go the extra mile for someone who really appreciates their craft.
