Daksi: David Crawler, & the Art of Turtle Shell Shakers

David Crawler has perfected the cultural art of making turtle shell shakers, or daksi. Making the shakers is a culturally protected practice as they are used in ceremonial stomp dances and have a special meaning to those who wear them.

Thank you for carrying on this tradition. I have been honored to attend stomp dances with dear friends from the Mvskoke tribe. There's a stomp ground at the end of our road, a mile or so away. I can often hear the beautiful rhythms and singing wafting through the night air. It's so beautiful.

Videos of speakers talking about making things and doing things on video are super helpful for Cherokee learners. Would love to see more clips like these ones of David Crawler speaking Cherokee. And...can we subtitle the English parts in Cherokee?

I wish I could do this again, maybe I will be soon. Car accident wrecked my left leg and I have a nice titanium rod in there. I dance the powwow styles, the Womens' Southern Cloth, but it's easier on that than stomp is. I'd especially like to show in the intertribals up here in the Northeastern US what our old-school Southeastern dances look like.

They're used for food. Very healthy recipes can be made from turtle meat.

If they’re catching these and killing then, it should be banned! Box turtles populations are already low as it is. Not to mention it takes about 10 years or so to reach adulthood. They don’t have many babies to begin with not to mention how many actually survive to adulthood.

I agree with you in terms of the decline of certain Turtle populations, even with a Global band in the trade and sale of endangered Turtles, this kind of thing is still happening. I respect other people's culture, but at the same time ethical practices in the conservation of the Turtle should be put in place.
