Dale is amazing to watch as he directs his artisans. Like a dancer weaving light that brings joy to all with the good fortune to become hypnotized by the results. As someone who has been into glass for decades and knows a smidgeon about art, Dale is truly one of the great artists in history. Even when his name is erased by time, some of his work which will survive, will continue to intrigue.

FANTASTIC! I didn't know until recently that I had the pleasure of seeing his works at Atlantis in the Bahamas. I was immediately awestruck at the magnitude of the installations. What an incredible gift to our times. He's a visionary.

I am a beginner in glassblowing, and I can personally tell you it's an incredibly difficult art that takes tremendous skill. It would be a very long time before I could even dream of producing work like Chihuly's. When you watch a glass artist blow, the process looks so fluid and simple to do, but once you're the one at the end of the pipe doing the work, you realize that is not the case at all!

What an artist. He use to blow the glass in his earlier career. Because of accidents he couldnt do it for his vision and his motor skills. Regardless of not touching the glass, his artistic mind is still mind blowing. He is also Bi-Polar like many artists. Lino and Dale are both colleagues and worked together. Both are brilliant. Art doesnt define better and best of all. Art in all forms doesnt rank people on how great they are compared to others. They all come from different perspectives.

Area13deadzone: you are so right. People have their head so far up his butt and it is all about the money. Anyone can hire talent to make stuff and then promote it. And his eye is not destroyed. It has always been fixable. Lino is the real deal and he really does do all his own blowing. He has more talent and stamina than anyone I have ever watched work. If you get a piece of Lino's you know he blew it end of story. Dale proved that souls really can be bought. If I pay phelps am I a swimmer?

I really hate when people say stuff like this - Dale (and I use his first name because I know him) was a 'hands-on' artist for a long time. Then he lost his eye in a car accident, which killed his depth perception, so now he must work with a team - He started Pilchuck, revolutionized the way western artists use color, and has created some of the most beautiful pieces ever made (with his own two hands) He most certainly is a REAL glass blower. Oh and btw, he does still touch the glass on occasion

i could rattle off the entire blenko designer history if you want. I could extol the virtues of Kinkade's work, even comment on the similarities of their works. I could spin a research paper on Lipofsky's early work, and indeed have. Dick Marquis is a cane and murrine master, no question. My only point is this. Chihuly (a man whose work i don't generally like to look at) has an earned and deserved place among those names.

A month ago Area13deadzone made a comment and everyone jump on him for telling the truth. If you are a student and really want the know, look at the similarities between Chihuly and Thomas Kinkade. Then start with Jamie Carpenter through Flora Mace up to present. Look at their pesonal work and Dales at the same time. He took their best ideas. Look up all in Harveys "line" Lipofsky,Marquis etc. and all from Joel Myers "line" Janusz, Weinberg, Higer, DeeEdwards etc & Pino, Lino, and Loredono

Gaffers are a dime a dozen. They are limited by their reverence for technique and process. Dale has the advanced vision to take the material to uncharted territory. His efforts have expanded the visual vocabulary for all gaffers. While Dale owes his gaffers big for realizing his vision, all glass makers need to understand that the current prices points for and public appreciation of contemporary glass derives from Dale's singular achievements.

why dosen't dale put the name of the artist that actually made the work, he's kinda of a user he gets rich while the people in Veince do all the work dosen't seem fair.

Like the comedian Kirk Fox said, "how good can you be if you can't blow a decent glass eye". Thought that was kind of funny, looks like he is a great artist regardless though.

Chihuly is a promoter, thats it; not a glassblower. he does not touch any hot glass. If you want to see a REAL glass blower check out Lino Tagliapietra. He is worth your respect.

Well, I'm an antique dealer specializing in art glass from all over the world, and my opinion is that Chihuly's work isn't that special. All of his fame came from those gigantic "pigtial" installations (which are quantity over quality), and after that, everything with Chihuly's name on it became worth buku-bucks. I always thought those organic-shaped "seafoam" pieces were just an excuse not to spend the effort to make something symmetrical. What aspect of his work impresses you most?

If he did he was being kind. He also gets a paycheck. The fact is that a true master of technique is supposed to be able to demonstrate those techniques. Otherwise you are mere commentary. My biggest beef is that he systematically broke down everything that Harvey Littleton did to get glass out of factories and into the HANDS of artists. And he stressed self reliance. Look at the people that stayed true to Littleton's model and you find the true best of the best of American glass art.
@Dierwolf2000

uhm, why is it that lino calls him a true master then?
@Area13deadzone
@Area13deadzone 13 жыл бұрын
@NoorAlHaqiqa , Look, check out some real artists, Lino Tagliapietra , Will Morris, John Miller, Dale is an interior designer, not "one of the great artist in history". He has brought a tremendous amount of publicity to his own work, and a bit to the studio art glass world, but he is a designer. His pieces are created by other people, rarely touching the glass with his own hands. Please just take time to appreciate true artists, who create their own work. But, art and options are subjective.
@Dierwolf2000
@Dierwolf2000 15 жыл бұрын
therefore chihuly's form of artistic expression is invalid? ithink even littleton himself would take offense to that, and lino actually said that he considers dale a true master because he does not tell someone how to do it, but rather what needs to be done. so, i defer to the man who many cal he best glassblower tht breathes, and who, as i understand it, works with chihuly's team to thisday.

You are obviously not far enough into the American glass making loop to get the point. So keep your head way up in there and your eyes closed....why dont you buy a piece from him that he did not design make or sign. My respect goes out to those still following Harvey's model. Not everything is about money and promotion. Without Harvey not one of these guys would even exist. How many vids are here about him on KZfaq? Nobody gives a shit of respect and he is the father of American art glass.

His designs are great, but he was never a decent gaffer. I am a profesional glassblower, and I respect gaffers, not designers. my original point is that there are many, many more people in the glass community with much more talent than Dale. I am glad he is here, he has brought some fame to the art, but he is no glassblower.
