Dale Earnhardt Sr's Runner up speech from his final appearance on the waldorf astoria stage. Earnhardt was runner-up to Bobby Labonte for the 2000 Winston Cup.

I was never a Sr fan until I met him at his dealership in 1999. He sat for 6 hours and signed my autograph and talked to me for five minutes when he was worth 100 million. His honesty and hard work paid off and now we have his great son, who though he didn't match his father's success is building NASCAR for us. I miss that mustache. I have one now to match his.

He came to Greenville Pickens Speedway near my house and was doing autographs we were unfortunately running behind because of something and they were packing up as we got there and my aunt chased him down and I was running behind her with my little legs as quick as I could go the year before he died got an autograph and got to spend like 10 minutes picking his brain as an 11-year-old and he listened

He pretty much did everything he needed to do from winning 7 Championships to Winning the 500 2 years before this moment, during these days 99-00 he was much more relaxed then he was during most of the 90s and 80s and also he was talking about retiring around this time

@@DixytheGoat9 I believed had Dale survived Daytona, he could've won at some tracks he never got wins at including New Hampshire, Fontana, Homestead, Vegas, Texas and Watkins Glen and perhaps score his coveted eighth Winston Cup Championship.

Humble, down home, folksy, engaging and modest. A terrific speech. Had he survived, you could see how Dale would have been an extraordinary color man up in the broadcast booth. But I think he would have enjoyed the challenge of going up against Rick Hendrick, Roger Penske, Richard Childress and Joe Gibbs as the chief of DEI. A true tragedy that Daytona took that all away.

You are correct with everything Michael. God, it makes me sad to see Dale, and listen to him again. I'd see him often and he'd 'Bopp' me on the head whenever he walked by, with his finger, and then make-it seem as though it wasn't him.

Yep I tried to "love" it after he passed. Wasn't the same. The new "attitude" era began to take hold (Busch brothers) and terrible attitudes and no respect for the sport, its history, it's elders, etc) and after the "woke" shit 2020, I trashed everything I had of memorabilia since Feb 01. I check headlines occasionally but it was apparent the thousands of dollars I spent since the late 70s, my $$ isn't welcome any more because I'm a white man from the South, I haven't "woke" up ????? and unapologetic. People like me made nascar the billion dollar outfit it is and then to have all the commentators give an inaccurate history lesson of the South, and tell me I need to "listen and learn" WTF? I thought I was trying to watch a race. Whatever, I've said too much. Back to watching my 1982 N. Wilkesboro race.

@@sbmcvp4525 I was trying to make it to nascar, but all everyone cares about is the stupid rich kids who need driver coaching to learn to drive and have parents money that they can just trash their equipment. I don’t wanna be in the political noosecar, I wish I was around for old Nascar the real thing not whatever the hell it is now. I only watch for Chase Elliott, he’s respectful and can wheel it in a superspeedway or road course but once he stops winning and retires I’ll never watch again.

Dale was NASCAR, the sport died when Dale died. Dale was not only my favorite driver but he became part of my family every Sunday as I watched the race with my father. You are truly missed Dale.

very true after all there was story about Dale when he and Richard were on a camping trip in New Mexico somewhere on one day they were horseback riding on a mountain somehow Dale's horse stumbled and fell down and both he and Richard fell down together. When they returned 2 camp at darkness Richard said 2 him, u know if I got killed today you would've had 2 go race tomorrow". Dale in return simply said, "Yup same here."

Maybe he knew he was getting near the end of his Full time career in NASCAR. I don’t think he would of kept that up too much longer. Maybe another 2 to 3 years or so. Wish he had that opportunity

I never love a race car driver as much as I did Dale. He made this sport what it is today! He was the best driver I have ever seen in 45 yrs of watching racing. I had the pleasure of meeting him he was so kind to me❤️. MISS HIM SO MUCH 🏁

I don't even watch then anymore it has become so wuzzy of a sport and racing is not racing and winning now either a 12 place driver can with the champion ship for the season with no wins and no tip 5 or 10s that's not good at all I can wait till the last ten races and win a race and win it all why work and drive hard all year to take it all with one win in the last ten races. Wuzzy racing at its best. The chase killed the racing as we knew it and they' changed it I read, but don't know what was changed about it just heard you didn't have to do anything all year but in the last 5 or 10 races win a race and win the champion ship too. Wuzzy wuzzy wuzzy. The retired drivers of the 1950s and up through the 1990s would stop racing as wuzzy as it has become. The people back then just wanted to race the best cars win races. All year not just the last 5 races out of 300 races a year they wanted to race that many days going as fast and hard as the could go. Now it's all wuzzy cars and wuzzy drivers. And wuzzy's rule the drivers have now days.

I met this legend four times in my life. Only one time was planned as I had pit and garage passes for one race and made an effort to meet and speak to him. The other times were away from the track, once at his dealership in North Carolina, another time at a restaurant in South Carolina and lastly at a marina in south Florida where he was on his fishing boat, "The Intimidator". I had great conversations with him each time and on the final meeting I had with him, he told me he remembered me as this guy I keep running into..LOL. He was so down to earth and he really loved to hunt and fish. I was in awe of being able to mix words with a man with such outstanding talent and ability. God sure broke the mold when he made Dale Sr. When he died at Daytona, I never returned to another NASCAR race. He was the best. RIP Dale Sr.

It's awesome to see the intimidator is still being shown after his long passing in 2001 at Daytona . I'm 40 yrs old but I was blessed to been able to watch one of the greatest Nascar driver's ever on the track. While growing up I watched many races Dale Earnhardt ran and became I can honestly say, one of the biggest Earnhardt fans there are. Even to this day... It was an honor seeing the amazing thing he done in a race car. He is forever missed.. but legends never dies.... I will forever be.... A fan of the infamous black #3

Dale was supposed to race full time until 2005 and then do a partial schedule. He was going to transition to the Sports Car Corvette team that he raced with in the 2001 24hrs of Daytona. I just can't, no matter how hard I try, imagine Dale voluntarily retiring from the sport. I was there at Indy in 96 when he handed Skinner ( of all people) his car, it would've destroyed him. I miss him daily and would do anything to see him race again or just be around. RIP Dale...

This sport seemed like it was such a close nit family kind of organization. Or maybe it’s just a reflection of how much Earnhardt was apart of the sports growth. Seems like everyone he mentioned in this speech he actually knew on some level. That’s amazing. I really wish I got a chance to meet him. #3

Great speech. He really had become quite a good public speaker by this time. His words reflect that he was still determined and passionate about racing. He also evinced modesty and sincerity. He was a solid guy. It is sad to see all the comments below by Perriwan Plays saying how stupid Earnhardt was for not wearing a Hans. Maybe it was dumb. But, why harp on the cause of his death, whether self inflicted, or not. His life should be celebrated. He left a solid legacy, and that is something all of us can strive to achieve in our lifetimes.

Dale was an amazing guy and driver. He did what he loved and that was driving that #3 GM Goodwrench Service Plus Monte Carlo. I don't care what anyone Dale hater says, he'll always be the best NASCAR driver there ever was!

very true it's exactly why Dale's death is never considered a tragedy sure it was hurtful temporarily but he died doing what he did best, racing if a person can die from doing what he/she loves doing, it's something 2 feel happy about because he/she will enter heaven wit happiness.

Mark Phelps Your right. It was a different time. The Hans device was not mandatory. Alot of drivers didn't wear it.It wasn't until his wreck that it became mandatory to wear. He also had neck surgery a few years before this

He was a great race car driver, but that alone, is only a part of the Dale Earnhardt Story... Great man, a great American Hero, and we today, surly could use a few American Hero's, like Dale Big...

it's amazing how much of an impact he left on the sport. I'm 18, I never even watched him race. but the legacy of Dale lives on and I will forever be a loyal fan to Dale Sr., Dale Jr., Kerry, and now Jeffrey. Long live the legacy and long live the Earnhardts

Watching Dale against Jeff Gordon in the 90s was a thing of beauty. Young hot shot against the Wiley veteran. A lot of the good old boys hated Gordon because he was a pretty boy but he really took NASCAR to another level. I think that's why Dale really respected him because he was probably the best driver around next to him.

Man, Dale Sr. and Dale Jr. couple great men right there. As a father, raising children, men like these aren’t around anymore. The way the world is, lot of softness and me me. These aren’t perfect men, nobody is, but it’s about class and integrity. We need more parents raising their children with at least those two virtues.

I didn't watch Nascar when Dale was around. I started in 03. I've never looked into Dale's final years but it's incredible what force he was. He was the sport. Wish he hadn't died. I hate to even say that.

Oh man, what a great racer. He's the face of NASCAR. I remember being at race's and he could be 4 laps down and when he came by everyone watched him. Something about him, iconic. He was the last so-called non pretty boy to be a fan favorite. He wasn't gifted with sponsorships, he earned it.

Jeremy Freeman Sorry, wrong. In the F1, Gordon was 1.3 seconds off of JPM's shakedown lap but over 4 seconds off of Schumi's fast lap. At the same time, Montoya was only a little over a second off of Gordon's best time in the NASCAR.

+Derek Ferrell that's great.... doesn't change the fact of f1's brake assist and traction control in car adjustments so on and so on NASCAR's you hit the track with what you got Gas Pedal brake and steering wheel then it's up to the driver to make it happen but I don't even watch Nascar look up the dirt late model dream that's going on this weekend 900 horsepower half-mile dirt track no traction control no radios no mirrors no spotters that's racing.

Damn, I miss ya Dale... NASCAR, RCR, DEI & Dale Jr have not been the same without you and the "Black #3" buddy. Thankx for the 7 "Winston Cup" Championships and the great memories. Keep passin' 'em in the grass, cause rubbin is racin'... JohnnyReb {North Carolina}

I still have tears form thinking of him leaving us the way he did. What a amazing human being, absolute professional who kept racing alive, that made it interesting, who we all loved and loved to hate all at the same time. But no matter what if your a driver you wanted to know where that black #3 was cause if he was gaining on you your veins turned ice cold cause you know he was creepin on you! We miss you dale, racing misses you! But i believe racing wouldn't be what it is today without you!

TIMMMAY67 No, not at all. I had nearly forgotten he was 2nd in points that year. I think some stories, some myths have evolved over the years and this makes me a bit nostalgic to remember what kind of person he really was.

I KNOW, because I went 2 Daytona 3 times with this weekend which is 4, I always looks at turn 4 where the fatal crash happened and I imagened it so many times that I sometimes start 2 cry.:'( May Dale Earnhardt rest in peace he will always be in our hearts.
