I can't get the idea of a Dalek when it's unable to chase it's enemies just deciding to relax and smoke a cigar now

The early Dalek designs couldn't hover, so they tended to give up when encountered with something like stairs.

@@quantisedspace7047 More likely Terry Nation. He died of emphysema, so it's not a huge leap to assume he was a smoker and maybe with the offer of a huge cheque agreed a right to use his creation.

The idea of Threepio working with the Daleks is not so far fetched. In an early episode of Second Empire (find it on KZfaq) an R2-D2 lookalike makes an appearance as a Vax-type vacuum cleaner being used by a housekeeper Dalek. No, really.

I'd imagine smoking doesn't hurt Daleks as much as humans because they lack lungs (I think)

It wasn't really up to them, The BBC never really had the rights to the Daleks which seems bizarre but Terry Nation owned the rights to the Daleks and anytime Doctor Who wanted to do a Dalek episode they would have to ask permission by waving some money at him, as you can imagine he became very wealthy.

@@CraigBickerstaff He owned the concept of the Daleks, the actual design is BBC copyrite. The BBC had to ask him or his estate for permission to use them intellectually but the whole caboodle is joint owned Thats why all dalek merchandise has BBC on it and not just Terry Nation if you look.

a week before new regulations was brought out to ban smoking on television, and daleks are associated with children tv and so would not pass the new smoking advertising rules.
