I visited the Gaya Street market in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah which is open every Sunday morning from 6am until midday. I arrived fairly late, at 11am, but still was able to enjoy a good hour there.
My first mission was to get myself kitted out in the local football team's jersey. It wasn't difficult to find a Sabah FC shirt but the prices were a lot more than I was paying for football jerseys in Indonesia.
After a bit of friendly bargaining I still ended up paying $16 USD, but the quality of the shirt was certainly high. The material was much nicer than the cheaper versions they had available.
I found a quiet spot to get changed into my new Sabah Football Club top, then went exploring for a refreshing drink.
There weren't too many food or beverage options available at the market, unfortunately. It's the same street where there is a night market on Friday and Saturday nights, but on a Sunday morning it's mostly goods that are being sold.
I did find myself some refreshing beverages though. A fresh young coconut and a cup of roselle juice. Roselle is a flower and I never knew it could be used in a drink, but apparently it's popular in Sabah and they mix it with honey to make it sweet.
After buying myself a very practical souvenir, a Sabah fan to keep me cool, I found the perfect way to conclude my trip to the Sunday market.
There was a side street with a huge row of chair where people were enjoying leg massages. I enquired the price, just 25 ringgit for half an hour. That's just over $5 USD. Well worth it.
The lady who gave me the leg massage was very strong. So strong that it hurt, but those are the best type of massage as you feel great afterwards. She started off with a foot massage, rubbing lotion into my feet, then onto my legs with some oil.
The man next to me was also getting a back massage and his wife told me that if you pay an extra 20 ringgit they also do your back. She also told me that all the massage ladies and masseurs are blind or visually impaired. They are from Sabah Society for the Blind. I hadn't realised until she told me.
The strong masseuse did a great job and I left the market feeling relaxed and happy.
With my freshly massaged legs I decided to go on a little hike up to Signal Hill, which is known as Bukit Bendera locally, for the Kota Kinabalu viewpoint. However that was a complete fail as when I reached the viewpoint the observation tower was closed for renovation and I got soaked in a thunderstorm on the way back down.
It wasn't until late at night that the rain stopped and I was able to get back out and finish the vlog. I went on the hunt for some local Malaysian cuisine and ended up at a place that's known as the Filipino Market.
There I enjoyed some Keropok Lekor (fish sausages) and a deep-fried snapper. All the seafood at that market is super fresh because it's right next to the harbour.
I was feeling pretty satisfied with how the day turned out, despite getting soaked in the afternoon.

Hi Dale, I am Sabahan. I do not recommend any tourist to go to the "Filipino market." Those people will always mark up the price when they see foreigners. rm60 for that fish & rm 12 for a vegetable? Even with cooking. That is expensive. You may think the stalls sell cheap food, but not with these "people." I am trying hard not to be racist. But really hate their attitude, dishonest people. It would be best to go to any local Sabahan seafood restaurant, like welcome seafood, near your hotel. They have a price tag and set a price per gram for fish. You can compare the price there. It should be about the same if not cheaper, at least restaurant quality & cleaner. I personally also recommend you to try: Suang Tain Seafood Restaurant and Grill Fish restaurant(shop lot in front Sutera Habour). Cheers mate.

also when i scroll down i see this comment..wow for sure its a proof dat these filipino market full with "dishonest people". thanks for trying really2 hard not to racist. S.N. Sherafie Izuan 12 hours ago (edited) 41:16 that's the cheapest 1 takeaway (tapau) fried rice and mee there, for only rm3, they have selling with that low price for more than 20 years.. since they also doing charity from their income. Long time ago, even 1 'tapau' portion from them can even filled enough for 2 people. A saviour for low income workers that works in the city, everyday. I remember once, I have less money due to late salary, they gave me free one to eat. 😭

@@zambriabdrazak5709 Excuseeee me, i am not Chinese la. I am Murut Sabahan. For your information - Grill Fish restaurant, is run by Bugis Sabahan. Not Chinese. I recommended that restaurant too. Please read carefully... you Like it Or Not, IMO the best race in preparing seafood dishes is chinese, so it is just a coincidence I had to recommend more restaurants (welcome seafood, Suang Tain restaurant.), If let say Sabahan Murut can prepare delicious seafood I would definitely recommend it. The Point is.. it needs to be delicious, affordable, worth, good value and clean! not scam. You go ask any Local Sabahan. Most prefer not to eat at Filipino market. You do know that many people have complained about the overprice and non-hygienic food at the warung restoran seafood in Filipino market. So many food poisoning cases occurred from that area, I know this because my friend works in Jabatan Kesihatan Sabah. So it is not safe to eat there. when i said trying not to be racist. Let me tell you a bit of history => from 1970s, Filipino-Moro refugees comprising Tausūg and Bajau peoples began to inhabit the Gaya island to escape from the war in the southern Philippines. These are "the people"i meant. I try to accept them from the perspective of Local Sabahan. But when they do bad things and scam people. How can I accept that??! Is it wrong for me to despise that?? Ko mahu saya lagi specific kah??? saya ada cakap kah org yg jual air, saya cakap yg jual ikan sama sayur.. baca bah betul2.. buka mata. what? terasa ka? ko pelipin kai ni..Nama Zambria Abdul Razak... atau melayu semenanjung? bikin panas... ko paham dulu situasi kami Sabahan baru ko cakap..

i wish i had the time to tell dale from the early day before he arrived here at sabah. its to avoid to go and eat at the night market seafood stalls. because they will mark up the price when they see you as a tourist.. it happened to me once..they thought i was a tourist came from china..but once i speak malay like local.. one of them walkes away and laugh in shame😂. so its is highly recommended to go to a local seafood restaurants that display their price for what they are selling. i know that red grouper or here local fisherman call them Suno is one of the priciest fish in the market..but seriously with that kind of sizes include with cooking for rm60 is a scam. dale if you read this..im so sorry for being late to tell you bout this. anyway hope you enjoy your day at here Sabah🫡

Keropok lekor is a traditional Malay fish cracker snack originating from the state of Terengganu, Malaysia. It is made from fish and sago flour and seasoned with salt and sugar. It is slightly greyish in colour and gives off a fishy taste and smell which becomes more prominent as it cools down after frying. The word lekor is said to be derived from a Terengganu Malay word meaning "to roll".

To be honest Rm60 for that fish is pretty expensive, for that size I would only pay Rm30 for it. Anyways, hope you have fun and enjoy Malaysia food! Keep up the good work Dale! 🔥

Dale , apparently that lady which you brushed off ( the ones talking to you about purchasing pearls and offered to pay for your fan ) was the wife of the former Top brass Chief Minister of Sabah. She keeps a very low profile and was there shopping as well. Wasted opportunity mate, she could have showed you the other side of Sabah. The person in black next to her with the shades must be her bodyguard.

1:02:36 DALE!!! U GOT RIPPED OFF HAHAHAA.. I am local. For the fish cooked with 3 choices Menu is quite expensive though, considered the fish size is very small. For Snapper 1kg here around rm18.. Include the cooking usually it is below rm30-rm35 at least. hahaha I think if u want to try seafoods, u can dine in at restaurants instead of pasar like this..

1. Signal Hill observatory platform used to open befor Covid 2. The Filipino market is just near the sea 3. MK is a famous Sabahan rapper, one of their friends looks likes him so they joked about it 4. The ikan 3 rasa is best to eat with rice and using a hand 5. Todak Waterfront is just near the Filipino market, its recommended to go there before sunset 6. To have better sea view, better go to Tanjung Lipat or Tanjung Aru EDIT: the Ikan 3 rasa is expensive because they charge you more than usual, Tanjung Lipat and Tanjung Aru have way cheaper price if you wish to eat seafood

Saw your story on instagram it was funny lol. You got some bargaining skills, I need to learn it from you. That lady was so kind who wanted to pay for the folding fan. The way you travel and show around the places is my fav way of traveling, by walking, i also walk and take photos of the surrounding areas when i travel somewhere, best way of exploring the place.

The night market filled with stalls selling foods and beverages at Gaya Street is more akin to the common Malaysian "pasar malam" culture. The day market at Gaya Street documented in this KZfaq video is what we Sabahans called "tamu"... Tamu is a weekly event and different districts have their own tamu open on different days... I am from Tamparuli... And the Tamu Tamparuli is opened every Wednesday... Tamu markets mostly selling various other things and very very very rarely foods and drinks... Tamu culture is not common in the peninsular Malaysia...
