He was more of Jocks son than Ellie’s and I think since most even Bobby himself was closer to his mamma than Jock. So I think that’s why out of all the Ewing family members preserving Ewing Oil as the strongest independent in the state and beyond J.R. took the most responsibility. And granted most of how J.R. had built up Ewing Oil into an empire through corruption, sweetheart deals and so on it was all taught to him by Jock so seeing his fathers kingdom in jeopardy of losing its strength he would do anything to keep it the family legacy

@@moemcgovern7345 exactly, I was actually rewatching it and was the episode when Bobby was shot by Katherine and everyone thought JR was gonna use the opportunity to takeover Ewing oil. Even John Ross asked his dad if he was gonna run Ewing oil by himself, and JR actually speaking honestly said that he loved his brother Bobby very much and that someday he was gonna fight Bobby for his share of the company but only when Bobby was strong enough to fight back. And that despite everything the Ewings loved each other more than anything

Jr is always right. He was right about what a weak man Gary was. He was right about opening those gas stations during the battle for Ewing oil, bc it was a winner take all AND it helped the little man at the gas pump. Snob Donna was wrong to end his variance, blaming the harm to environment as the reason. Bullshit. He was right to blackmail and destroy that freak Edgar Randolph. Later we all saw how unstable Randolph was when he opened fire in the middle of the city. The guy deserved to be locked up. I always sided with JR over Bobby. It was business

Contrary to conventional wisdom, neither Bobby nor JR were the good or bad guys. JR was very shrewd and had the stomach to make the tough decisions. He wasn't afraid to take risks and you have to do that in the oil business. But as Jock said, "he didn't know when to stop." Bobby was actually a good businessman himself. Jock himself thought so when Bobby filled in for JR after he was shot. He was someone you could trust and he did get Ewing Oil back in the good graces of the cartel after the Asian Oil disaster. But Bobby was a bit too idealistic and didn't have the same killer instinct as JR. Jock was a combination of both. He knew when to be cutthroat like JR. But he also understood loyalty like Bobby.

Everybody keep saying that Bobby was so self righteous and acted so perfect. I don't think that's what it was. Sometimes Jr. would sleep with women to get deals. He would blackmail and manipulate to get the job done. Bobby wasn't like that and nothing is wrong with that. Maybe Bobby was more of the ranch with Ray then the office with Jr.

He was boring, that is why Duffy wanted to leave the show, he was tired he didn't have freedom to explore the character even more and tired of being the good guy

Bobby was never the “wheelin’ dealin’ “ type. He was pretty much the T&E guy before and when he married Pam in the very beginning of the show. It’s only through her encouragement and his desire to make a life for his family he went deeper into the family business. Then he started seeing how JR operated and wanted to do business more ethically and serve as a check on JR. The competitive juices really got revved up when Jock died and pitted them against each other for control of the company through his will. In reality he enjoyed working the land (similar to his brother Gary) more and Miss Ellie recognized that when she left him SouthFork.

What happened right after this storyline was the BD Calhoun scandal came back to haunt JR and the gov't shut down Ewing Oil, forcing JR and Bobby to have to start over (separately) their own oil ventures. Of course later on, Bobby got the name Ewing Oil back while JR got all of the assets back.

What I always thought was so boring yet perplexing at the same time is so many things from the "dream season" came true. In the "dream season" Pam grows tired of the daily hassles of dealing with JR. So she sells Christopher's shares to JR. In both scenarios, JR ends up owning Ewing Oil.
