Sheldon Wohlman of Utility Sports breaks down the early returns of both Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington from their first and second games with the Dallas Mavericks. With the Mavericks off to a hot start with their new additions, the Mavs look to get out of the play-in mix. The added offensive talent and defensive size and energy should help the Mavericks significantly this season. Now, was the cost worth the upgrade? That's yet to be seen. But, the early showings of both Washington and Gafford in Dallas have been great! Leave a like and subscribe for more NBA Content!

It's a 2030 pick swap. By then luka's contract is finished and we're unsure if he stays or not plus by then Wemby is at his prime. So it may have some value but I'm not being negative about it cos what matters is now. To be competitive enough against championship caliber teams. Isn't the idea that getting better immediately helps retain Luka? And if he wants out you move him for picks/prospects and start a rebuild plan. The 2028 pick swap is top 2 protected so if we lottery a top pick we still get it.

it's a catch-22 really. if the mavs don't do anything, Luka will choose to leave. and if they trade assets now, they're sacrificing their future. for me i'd rather sacrifice the future than regret letting a generational talent choose to walk just because the mavs are too scared of the future.

Sam is a great gm but remember ownership is cheap. There is only so much he can do. Mavs fans know this well because Mark Cuban is cheap. We lost Brunson and Gianias all because he wanted to save money. A few million would have made Brunson a restricted free agent but he didn't want to spend it and we lost him for nothing.

I definitely don’t agree with they “gave up too much” especially for players the same age as Luka basically . they also have two first rd picks and 4 first rd picks this season which they could actually get an even better player to upgrade the roster. Also, Making a better roster requires risk and with a generational talent like Luka u don’t try and keep a bunch of picks or worrying about them to that degree that u don’t make the team better. Mavs also even with picks haven’t been the luckiest team getting stars outside of kyrie. No lebron led team ever cared about picks when you have a top 5 player like Luka. I also look at PJ like Aaron Gordon for Denver. Big physical wings who can guard multiple positions and AG isn’t a shooter but he can occasionally knock down a shot despite the fact he’s a 32% career 3pt shooter. Pj is a career almost 36% so not worried about shooting this team has plenty of that anyway. Mavs can after this trade win the west because they no longer have glaring holes on the team. Overall great video and i just subscribed.

Love the video and break down I do want to touch on the picks Dallas gave up - they only lost the 2027 pick. In 3 years, that pick will still be negligible if Luka is on the team. If Luka is NOT on the team, then you better bet that Dallas is trading him for a huge haul, which again would alleviate the future flexibility issues. We also received 2 SRPs back in the deal A 2028 pick swap in 4 years is just as moot. The Thunder will absolutely be competitive still in that time with their core, and Dallas will be as well. If they aren't then Luka is gone and we have plenty of other picks. Let's also take into account, that Luka is about to become eligible for a 5 year $367 million extension in 2025. In NO WAY would he turn that down, no matter what else is going on with the team.
@UtilitySports
@UtilitySports 4 ай бұрын
You’re missing a key point: If they trade Luka for a crap ton of picks, the draft picks they get will be from a contender (so picks in the late 20s) while their own picks will be at the top of the draft (27 to Charlotte, 28 swap with OKC, 29 to Brooklyn and 30 swap with Spurs) Look where Brooklyn currently is if you want to see how that would work

I know you are an analytics guy, but I'm paper Grant Williams is supposed to be a match-made in heaven in terms of his fit with Luka and the mavs, but its just doesn't work out sometimes... I agree with you that giving a a lightly protected 1st round pick for PJ was a bit much (I wished it top 10 protected) and I would lean to Hornets winning that trade. I see that you look at PJ hitting the 3s as one of the main factors to see if the trade was worth it, but if you use the "eye test", *it looks like PJ has a good shooting form,* he's big for a 6'7 player (I secretly think he's 6'8 because he looked massive when he was standing by DJJ and Luka, and he looked an inch or 2 shorter than Gafford), and defensively, he's got all the tools to be a versatile defender with his foot speed and 7'2 wingspan... I think in the coming games, he'll surprise you and yyou'll lean towards the trade being more even bc of his overall impact for the Mavs.

I wouldn’t really call myself an analytics guy. I do think analyzing shot form is an exercise in futility though. Haliburton’s shot form isn’t pretty but he’s an elite shooter. The reality is in the playoffs that if PJ doesn’t make open shots, it will become a massive issue

PJ has shot a good percentage before. I think he’ll find his shot as he gets more consistent wide open looks. PJ also adds and element we’ve needed more than shooting.
