A video postcard of Dallas, Oregon, located about 15 miles west of Salem, in the lush Willamette Valley. Dallas was incorporated in 1874, and is the county seat of Polk County. The city center, surrounding the county courthouse, comprises a number of original historic storefronts, generally well-maintained and attractive.
Filmed for the Oregon Historical Society by James Norman. Shot in 4K with a Gopro 4. Music by Kai Engel. June 2105.

Dallas, Oregon was a great town to grow up in. I lived there in the late 70's, early 80's and I have great memories of my mom taking us to the Blue Garden Restaurant and J C Pennies for clothes and shoes and the great movie theater. Sadly my mom passed away from cancer in 83 and we had to move. I miss Dallas, Oregon but visit it at least once a year to the old apartments we lived in on Walnut St. Dallas has changed a lot since I moved from there, sad to see the old swimming pool gone though. Dallas, Oregon will always be in my heart in remembrance of my mother Verdell Wettengel!

We used to have a real town before Walmart. Now the downtown area has a lot of thrift stores. This has happened across the United States and is very sad.

Dallas is a great small town to raise a family. Been here almost 20 years in one of the historic victorian homes. These little towns are a treasure and with any hope it will stay small but its not looking like it will.

Dear James. You beautifully introduced, refreshed people's memories of Dallas, Oregon. My dream was to live close to a city, town that looks and feel like, you're stepping back in time. The city center, surrounded by well-maintained historical buildings, are absolutely breathtaking. My dream actually is coming alive. We're in a process purchasing a property in Ellendale by the Rickreall Creek. We've never been to Dallas, but we fell in love with our future home, and surroundings, in a second. We acted on it immediately 2 weeks ago, and we will be moving there in a month. Dallas is exactly the way I'v imagined living my life. Thank you for reassuring just that.

James thank you for portraying the town so well, I too grew up in that town in the late sixties through the eighties. I remember going to Morrison grade school and sneaking around the mill grounds and the log decks to be chased off by the mill workers. My whole family made their livings in those mills and around that town. We bought most everything we needed from all those stores down town. We picked our own fruit and grew big gardens, everybody canned back in those days. We spent our lazy summer afternoons down by Rickreal creek keeping cool and fishing for crawdads. Back then my mother made me carry a dime in my pocket just in case I had to make a phone call.

I live here currently. Its a lazy little town. Honestly, there isn't much to do if you're looking for excitement, but its a nice town to settle down and live in. The city park is nice, and there are plenty of great people. The school system is crap tho, lol.

It use to have a great school system but things changed when the people changed that ran it for years and then they got too old and retired. Great in the 50's, 60's, 70's for sure.

Walmart has just about turned downtown Dallas into a ghost town. A town with a bunch of thrift shops. The Ice Queen on the corner has been changed to Mexican Food and so has the old A & W. So sad to see those go. Grocery shopping has been relegated to north of town which has turned that into a clogged artery.

2bless8 Arrh, that makes me sad i like small towns and that vibe they have, pride in their city, supporting local businesses, lots of nature all around for recreation.

@@mamachase128 Hi. I don't know how long you may have lived in Dallas but yes, there used to be an A&W on Fairview Ave. that is the Ixtapa Mexican Restaurant now if it is still there. 1320 SW Fairview. I hear the food at Ixtapa is really good.
