Messenger was the greatest rugby player in Australia in the early part of the 20th Century. He was lured to the professional rugby competition when they began in 1907.
He joined the NZ All Golds on their tour of GB in 1907 and then led the Australian Kangaroos on their first tour to GB in 1908. His fame was instrumental in the success of the fledgling Sydney professional rugby competition.
Today, the highest awards in the game are named in his honour.
