Today, I will review both the Damasko DC66 Chrono and the Sinn 757 UTC-Chrono. These are fairly similar models, both Made in Germany masterpieces, from extremely skilled craftsman.
Sinn is known around the world for making extreme tool watches. Can Damasko deliver and hold it's own weight against the powerhouse?
Check out our selection of Damasko watches at: www.longislandwatch.com/Damas...

The thing I like about this specific Damasko is that the day-date is not aligned with the 3 o'clock position. It's set ever so slightly lower than, but level with, the 3 o'clock position. As 4 o'clock date windows are a pet peeve of mine, and preferring day-dates in all situations, the way they have done it is very classy and highly legible. I said it before in a different Damasko review, Damasko is much more adventurous stylistically than Sinn, and that makes them especially attractive from a design perspective. These things are great, and if I hadn't just bought a Sinn 157M only recently, I'd probably be shopping Damasko right now.

Great video Mark if I were in America instead of the UK you would definitely be my preferred watch dealer! 👍 Just a little note some knife stainless steel's easily exceed 60 HRC. ZDP 189 for instance can go up to 68 HRC but yes for a watch case 60 HRC is amazing. Just purchased a DA46 from the UK Damasko dealer so looking forward to putting it's hardness to the test.

Great review, I like the Sinn for from the technical aspect. However, I own a U1 T-SDR and I can tell you Sinn makes tool watches. Either you hate it or love it, sure Sinn tends to be a bit more expensive. I feel Damasko is making the effort to catch up by taking on the time to make their product more enticing with better visuals then Sinn. The UTC feature from Sinn is genius, use it when you need it and when you dont, you just hide it. When I am ready to make a purchase, I will be for sure looking at Damasko, thank you Mark for your video! Both are definitely great time pieces.

Thanks for presenting both watches. Just a question, because I may have misheard: I understand that the silicon balance/hairspring in the Damasko is in the 66 "si" models, not the "normal" 66; as per their homepage, the SI commands a c. 700EUR price premium and retails on their page at c. 2,800 EUR vs. c. 2,100 for the non-SI model.

I know a lot of pilots both military and civilian who wear the DC66 and love it. I don't understand the complication in remembering GMT its something a 5 year old can work out with a watch. Just memorise on the dial where UTC from where you are and count accordingly you don't need another dial.

I used to own the Sinn 756 version 1 which had Damasko ice hardened case. their partnership deteriorated shortly after... I think they only made about 1000 pieces of that watch. I made the stupid move of selling it of course... still kicking myself for that one. Anyway, the ice hardened process is no joke. it really works and works well. I feel it much better then Sinn's surface treatment. Both Sinn and Damasko are technically superior. I do prefer what Damasko is doing. I have plans to add the DC66 on bracelet sometime soon. Oh, and their ice hardening process is on every piece of the watch, including the bezel. probably the most scratch resistant watch on the market right now.

Both watches are really great! I love Sinn and own four of them, also this 757 UTC. I know that Damasko and Sinn were (are still?) somewhat connected (cases) but I never really was into Damasko. I think today they're a great competitor to Sinn as their prices are mostly a bit lower. Also, their technology seems to be at least as sophisticated as Sinn's. To be honest I think they're both probably use pretty much the same tech in some point. Everything you told about the pushers and the tegimentation (Sinn called it ice hardening as well in the past!) seems to be pretty much the same?! Will definitely keep an eye on Damasko. But I think that Sinn will have the better resell value as it's the more known brand. Also their variaty in their lineup seems to be a lot bigger than what Damasko has to offer. Nevertheless, both are great brands! (whispers in Sinn... :D)

@Jeffrey Neu: Damasko watches are great, but I wouldn‘t use a watch made of their „ice hardened steel“ for diving, since this material is tough but susceptible to corrosion. Check their DSub line of watches instead, which are made of „submarine steel“, an alloy that is highly resistant to sea-water corrosion.

Hey Marc, as far as I know, the day/date wheel on the DC66 does not flip between English and German - at least it doesn‘t do so on my 2014 model DC66Si. If I‘m not mistaken, you have to decide „up front“, whether you want an English or a German day/date wheel on your Damasko DC-model watch. It‘s different on the DA line of watches though, since they offer a bilingual day/date complication. Nonetheless - I‘d pick a Damasko over a Sinn any day!

The 2500 is the hardness of the PVD coating. Sinn''s PVD coating has a hardness of "2000 to 3000 HV" according to www.sinn.de/en/Technology_Glossary.htm#technikp (under "PVD"). So pretty much the same as Damasko. That same section on PVD also confirms the 1200 HV hardness for Sinn's tegimented steel.

Love Damasko. The UTC feature on the Sinn appeals. I’d go Damasko, I’ve heard they’re almost scratchproof, plus I like the family background. Here in the UK, we have a company called Page and Cooper, who had near exclusive selling rights, here. The boss visited Damasko, toured the factory, did great videos, then, suddenly out of the blue, they parted ways. P and C wouldn’t stock them, Damasko wouldn’t comment, but P and C implied they couldn’t work with each other, so that was it. I was gutted. Anyway, other folk stock them, now, so I’ll get mine elsewhere. For me, the DC66 is a grail.

All good to great steels, but the other alloys don't compare to the S90V in hardness and edge retention. I can hand sharpen all those knifes to great sharpness with all kinds of stones (which is a positive in most scenarios), the S90V knife eats through those stones lol. The only way I could sharpen it was via the diamond stones and lapping films on the KME.

@@JonnyParker- I use water stones, but also other non-water stones for use on the go like the small ceramic ones by Fällkniven. Elmax and m390 keep a very very good edge while being hardened to a high degree without the sharpening being as hard as with S90V. What makes S90V almost impossible to sharpen with whetstones or ceramic stones are the carbides. Anyway, hand sharpening is fun and has something meditative to it.

@@islandwatch oh, my bad. funny how I didn't even think of them as competition who sell watches. kinda naive of me, but I see a lot of these channels as information in a collaborative community. guess in the end it's all just storefronts for vendors. Well, when I get my Damasko, which I imagine I will one day, I'll be looking to your store as you also sold me my first "real" watch, an skx013, 4 years ago which got me started in the hobby. peace.

They are virtually the same. But I would go with the damasko cuz you got the running seconds at nine and instead of a gmt hand the have the day. And instead of traveling from City to City everyday I just drove down the road to work and work all day and I'd rather have the day just in case I forget what day it is at work. And it's more affordable. So the only thing the Sinn beats it at is water resistance, but the damasko still has a screw down crown and you know your ass ain't going more than a hundred feet under water much less a hundred meters.

I love Damasko, but they're just too damn expensive. I've been waiting and saving to try and get a Sinn someday--maybe--if I'm lucky--one of their lower end watches... But Damasko? They're just out of my budget range for the foreseeable future.

I thought you said Damasko has the patent on that hardening process? But it's done by a 3rd party? The Sinn dropped the ball with the aluminium bezel insert. No point having the hardest scratch free case with an aluminium bezel all dinged up. I'll have a look at other Damasko watches and see if they appeal to me... Provided all their watches are made with the same hardening process.
@islandwatch
@islandwatch 5 жыл бұрын
This is not odd. Just because you have the patent doesn't mean you have the capability.

Great video again, thank you! I love the SINN's ("hidden") GMT hand but I prefer the Damasko dial's and bezel's ergonomic display. It makes them look more harmonious and less busy than the striking big SINN's 3, 6, 9 ans 12 indexes. It is my opinion and small remark only, because both pieces look great and made with a professional "German attitude" where no quality compromise is allowed. Moreover, with the best components.

It really bugs me when they have sapphire crystals and even case hardening, but just an aluminium bezel insert, as this tends to get mashed up first, so my vote is for the cheaper of the two

I can't tell you how many times my finger has hovered and quivered above the "buy now" button for a Damasko DA43. If you ever get the 12 hour bezel variant back in stock, I fear that resistance will be futile. These are watches for watch nerds, much like the Seiko Tuna. We enthusiasts really "get" them and their intrinsic value. In my experience Sinn, Damasko, and Stowa watches hold their values remarkably well in the used market. Laco, not so much unfortunately.

Not sure if it's an optical illusion, but the Sinn dial and hands look more 3-dimensional, as if the indices are slightly raised and the edges of the hands are slightly rounded, whereas the Damasko dial and hands look flat. To me, that was the same downside as the last Damasko watches that were reviewed here, even though those blue dials were amazing. Unfortunately, the heft, solidity, and engineering of a watch can't be conveyed in photos or on video, and therein lies the difficulty of buying watches online that you can't previously find, look at, and feel in a brick-and-mortar store. With a Seiko, by contrast, you know exactly what you're buying.
