I saw several of Dame Edna’s live stage shows. All were great, and riotously funny. But at one particular show, on Broadway in 2005, Edna created a moment of such breathtaking hilarity that I regard it as a turning point in my life. It was a verbal gimmick involving an unsuspecting member of the audience. It induced in me a type of laughter that qualified as an out-of-body experience.

You had to be there and it’s hard to describe but: in Act II some members of the audience were brought onstage to read a play, complete with scripts and makeshift costumes. The characters were based on Dame Edna’s family. The audience member playing Dame Edna’s son “Kenny” was reciting his lines. There was a deliberate risqué mistake written into the script, a sort of fake typo, which caught everyone off-guard. It was uproarious and already extremely funny, but Dame Edna’s reaction to the reading of the line, her attempt to correct it, and her scolding of the audience for laughing, all came together as if the entire evening’s hilarity was hinging on that moment. Of course it had all been planned by Edna from the beginning. The audience was helpless, willing to be slaves of Dame Edna for having given us the funniest bit we’d ever experience in a theater.

The segment at 26.44 where Dame Edna relates how the enzyme in mother's saliva has a curative element, and then lets on that her mother (living in the maximum security twilight home) is drooling sufficient quantities to harvest 7-8 barrels a day is one the most eye wateringly hilarious bits of tv I've seen in my 68 years on the planet. Vale, Dame Edna/Barry - an extraordinarily gifted comedian who invariably left everyone - audience, hosts and other guests - in tears of laughter. That was his/her gift to the world and what a stunning legacy it has now become.

Thanks for putting this together. There were so many more moments showing her cutting wit and what people don't realize, her deep research into the lives of people on the shows so that she could get her timing just right to put them into a corner they couldn't get out of. I say "she" because, of course, she was created and literally took on a life of her own. It's a terrible loss, not only because of her talent, but because it is the end of an era of her own personal humour. There simply is nobody else who does what she did. It's gone forever. Sad.

As a Melburnian, one of her most brilliant moments was in her 'home town' in 2003, when she invited a charming young couple, married for seven years, onto the stage and telephoned the man's mother, who was on holiday in Brisbane. Hilarious, and available on the internet, as is her famous 'BBC Last Night of the Poms' at the "Alfred" in London in 1980.

I have never seen anyone get away with saying whatever they want to someone and get big laughs from them. If anyone else said these things offence would be taken. Absolute genius delivery and timing. Pee Wee Herman and Dame Edna are two of my biggest influences in my life. You want to learn how to make people around you comfortable and like you, watch Dame Edna. There is nothing more exposed for a human than crying or laughing uncontrollably and to make a whole room do that is impressive.

Thank goodness for KZfaq which enables us to relive and enjoy these wonderful interviews, especially the Parkinson ones with Dame Judy and Sharon. I just love how they’re perched up on their chairs worried about what’s coming next. Absolute gold. Whenever I watch this it takes about 20 years off me.
