She was also a brilliant and caring jazz guitar/music educator. I had the crazy good fortune to study with Emily in nyc in 86 or 87. Before she went to CA where I’m guessing she might have recorded east to Wes. Anyway, on many occasions, when we’d just jam a bit on the blues, I saw her play lots of stuff like blues for herb. Just winging’ it. Groovin. From 2-3’ away in her living room. She was so f**king good! She could really swing. Sadly, she was frequently busy with gigs and personal stuff so a lot of lessons got cancelled and I only got to study with her for about 6 months before she went to the west coast. Still, her effect on me was profound. Some of my most cherished memories. I remember reading about her passing and not being able to process it.

I studied with her when she was here in LA in the pit orchestra for Sophisticated Ladies. I'd been studying with Jimmy Wyble and he told me that a great female guitarist was coming to town and I needed to study with her so he set it up. There were very few female guitarists back then (early 80s) so it was really great to work with someone who was doing what I wanted to do.

Damian, thankyou! I was feeling a bit discouraged with my current progress in the acoustic bluegrass vain. So I clicked your video, followed along and learned this lesson. It was a shot in the arm! I went back to the other bluegrass song I was trying to learn and it flowed so much better. Nothing like shifting gears to get around guitar road blocks. The success I had with your lesson was transferred to success in bluegrass. I still have work to do on both lessons. But I'm back to having fun!
