In the 1960s, Ford Motor Company embarked on building a supercar that could beat the Italian automaker Ferrari at one of the world's most prestigious car races, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That effort (and the story of the car designer and driver behind it) is now told in the new movie "Ford v. Ferrari." Correspondent Tracy Smith talks with stars Matt Damon (who plays Carroll Shelby, the automotive artist hired to defeat Ferrari) and Christian Bale (who plays legendary driver Ken Miles) about the quest to create a finely-tuned weapon of speed.

While I can say that if I was the producer in charge of this segment I probably wouldn't have left that in the edit, it doesn't really spoil the ending for a movie, not in the way that many on here are reacting to. Think about it, the fact of Miles' death doesn't really have anything to do with the central story they're telling here. The goal by the characters at the start of the story was to do something that had never been done, and they fully accomplished that. It happens by way of something entirely apart from the LeMans race, it's more of just an epilogue to the film, and included because it's what did really happen out of nowhere.

the director of the film gave a great IndieWire interview about the film and Bale, one great quote: '' I felt the role was close to Bale [who starred in Mangold’s "3:10 to Yuma"], and prayed he would do it. He’s a model to me of artistic perseverance and flexibility. He'll text you with thoughts and free associations about the character. It's all incredible food. He’s a wonderful father, loving husband, great friend. He’s not interested in being famous. He drives a pickup truck, he’s grounded in the world, he raced motorcycles but had to stop when he got hurt, when he had kids. There are so many parts of Ken in Christian, who’s a perfectionist. He’s trying to achieve something for himself. It's magical to direct someone like that because they draw you into their own idealism. You feel that energy; it permeates the set. ''

The track scene at the 2:00 mark looks a lot like the downhill at Road Atlanta, except that it’s a lot steeper than it looks in the film. The scene where Henry Ford II gets scared sh_tless when driven in the GT40 by Carroll Shelby is not a Hollywood exaggeration. As a professional racing instructor, I’ve given hundreds of demo rides to people who’ve never been in a race car driven near its limit, and I’ve seen similar reactions up to and including loss of bladder control. If you haven’t had the experience of being on a race track at speed, it is an adrenalin high. Put it on your bucket list; it will not disappoint. Tragically, Ken Miles was killed 6 months after Lemans while testing the Ford GT40 being developed for the 1967 race. Just as tragic, Miles crossed the finish line first, but had the victory stripped from him when he was ordered by a Ford executive o allow the other two Fords to catch up so as to finish in an orchestrated dead heat, and, by a quirk in the rules, the #2 car of Bruce McLaren & Chris Amon was given the victory since it had travelled farther than the Miles/Hulme car having started the race 8 meters farther back in the pits. Had Miles been awarded the victory he deserved, he would, still today, be the only driver ever to win the 24 hours of Sebring, the 24 hours of Daytona and the 24 hours of LeMans in the same season.

There's a basic difference between American and Italian race cars. American muscle cars rely mostly if not entirely, as the word implies, from pure muscles or engine power, so to speak. Italian cars, on the other harness the benefits of aerodynamics with lesser engine power requirement. So it is a game of effectiveness versus efficiency. One may not necessarily be better than the other when on tracks but it delineates how advance one team's design is over the other.

If only Ferrari had Fords money and resources to throw at one race?
@ImThe5thKing
@ImThe5thKing 4 жыл бұрын
@@Toby_the_Glen Well, the only reason they didn't was because Ford and Ferrari are completely different in the way they run things. Ford had passenger cars and pickup trucks that millions bought. That was what Ford was and still is about. Enzo Ferrari only made road cars because lots of motorsports (back then, at least, I'm not sure about now) required teams to manufacture "this many" road going versions of the race cars or something similar. In fact, when Ford wanted to buy Ferrari, Ezno was willing to sell the manufacture of road cars to Ford. He just wanted to keep control over the racing team and Ford didn't want to give him the money he needed to keep the Ferrari's racing team competitive.

Ford changed the deal they had discussed earlier. No wonder Ferrari said no. Ford wanted to show their might with money when they tried to change Ferrari's controls over the race team. I am not really a Ferrari fan, but, you have to respect his dedication to racing. Ferrari actually never cared about his road cars, He used to not attend the races, since he didn't want to see his babies (cars) being thrashed by the race car drivers. Funny, they have made their name in racing and some great road cars. But, Ford is essentially still producing bad, unreliable cars. And before anyone starts commenting about some good cars, with a Ford name, all those were essentially designed and sometimes manufactured by the Europeans.

4:23 says it all. Doesn't matter what you drive .Its all about the driver . Also, the only good Fords that were made for performance were designed by shelby.

That's not true. Shelby had little or nothing to do with the Torino Talledegas, Mercury Cyclones , and Thunderbirds that won in NASCAR, or the mk 1 and 2 Ford Escorts that won so many rally races, or the Cosworth Sierras or RS 200, or the Foyt Coyote engine that was based on the Ford Indianapolis 500 engines. There is a *lot* more to Ford racing programs than the mustang, cobra and GT 40.

I just wish the history books would be honest about how the fight between ford/Ferrari started. When ford was looking to buy Ferrari the race division was not part of the agreement. So when ford showed up in Italy with 8 or so lawyers and a stack of papers for Ferrari to sign, with selling the rights to his race team he felt as though he was being strong armed. So simply stood up with his single lawyer and left for lunch. And if anyone were to do there homework they would too know that he would never sell his race team. At the end though it is a great story of “mines bigger than yours” that could only be between a American and a Italian.
