Damon Hill was my first ever hero. The first race I ever watched was the San Marino GP in 1994. I was 10 and remember asking my dad why he was worried when Senna crashed. I remember later in the evening watching ITV evening news when the announcement was made. It was the first time I ever saw my father cry. The only other time I saw him cry was when his mother passed away. I watched F1 until Hill retired, and started watching again in 2007 when Hamilton started.

Chris Shoji Me to, absolute gents. Graham to me always looked like Dick Dastardly but in the real he was the opposite. As soon as Damon started I was emotionally pushing him, as for 94 when he was cheated out of the world championship by a cheat it broke my heart. I don't like cheats.

@TheGschultz In a way he does due to being World Champion and being son of Graham Hill there's a lot of fondness for him so there's a lot of back story there. He doesn't get the same adulation as Nigel Mansell - no one could apart from maybe Hamilton (just maybe). Brundle's stock really only increased due to his commentary where he could really tell the intricacies of driving the car in a way you could understand clearly.

Damon, you have been giving back to the sport while you were racing, all the time as you pointed out racing against teams with a not so competitively strong team, you have also been giving back as an f1 expert for Sky. Keep doing that because you do it well. Also on another note, you are sometimes too humble. Not a trait often seen in F1 championship winners. That makes you a legend in the sporting eyes of people who still value the most important ingredient of sports. NEVER forget that.

Damon Hill is a great person. His understatement and honesty is just something you have to give maximum respect! The honesty about Adelaide 94, where he once said he maybe would have done the same Schumacher did(if it was done by Schumacher in purpose to shoot Hill off)- maximum respect! He was a pretty good driver, underrated! Not as good as the Big Ones like Fangio, Senna or Schumacher but definetely one of the Drivers in the Top League like a Hakkinen, Villeneuve, Mansell etc. He always knows what he is able to, never exaggerates, is always honest! A really Big Human Being! Maximum respect!

I remember Damon as guy who didn't have the usual big ego of an F1 driver. A very down to earth guy that was underappreciated. leewat Villeneuve destroyed HHF and Hill beat Villeneuve. It’s the classic F1 driver match-up triangle.

Does anyone else remember Graham Hill and Jimmy Hill doing a bit of a song and dance on a variety show? They wore matching outfits of shirts with huge collars, tank tops and flares. It must have been in the 60s because they both had long hair, it was a micky take and really funny. Why does random stuff like this jump into my mind?

Jennifer Holden I think it was actually Jimmy Hill he was doing that routine with. I believe at the time the perception in the UK was that they looked similar and related.

A great chap Damon Hill. So humble and modest. Full of humour, humility with little sense of any bitterness towards anyone or resentment. As great a team as Williams were they didn’t have a great reputation in driver management. I guess they also bought into the “Frentzen is quicker than Schumacher” mantra that was doing the rounds at that time. It certainly didn’t prove to be the case and Williams would’ve been better off just sticking with Hill and Villeneuve for 97 imo.

Working for Sky seems to have made him a much more confident public speaker, he's more like Graham than his relatively shy prime persona suggested. A match for anyone when focused, confident and motivated. Yes, including Schumacher. Watch Hungary '97 for proof that he wasn't merely lucky to be in those Williams.
