Recorded March 20. 1976
DAN FOGELBERG
Piano, acoustic & electric guitars, vocals
FOOL'S GOLD
Ron Grinel, drums; Tom Kelly, bass and vocals; Denny Henson, piano, acoustic guitar and vocals and Doug Livingston, pedal steel (I've been informed by Dave Pearlman, that he played pedal steel and Richard Bowden played guitar- I don't remember where I saw the credits but I have no way of verifying this so I will list all for the listener to sort out)
THE VENUE
The Capitol Theatre was an entertainment venue located at the intersection of Monroe Street and Central Avenue in Passaic, New Jersey. Built in 1926 as a vaudeville house, the Capitol later served as a movie theater (in its later years a XXX movie theatre) and (after John Scher bought the property) a venue for rock concerts.
Throughout the 1970s and into the mid-1980s, the 3,200 seat theatre was a popular stop on nearly every major rock artist's tour. The venue was known for its in house video system which resulted in a number of good quality, black and white video bootlegs. After it closed, the building fell into disrepair and it was demolished in April 1991. A shopping center known as Capitol Plaza occupies the site now.

In the spring of 77 I saw Dan in Chicago. It was shortly after the release of Netherlands. My god I was captivated. I became a life long fan. I also had prostate cancer that was treated in September 2001. I am thankful to have had so many more years to listen to his songs. Ever On.

This is pretty astounding. I was at this concert. I sat in the 3rd row and took still photos. My friend recorded it with a cassette recorder in her purse and we had every single moment of this concert memorized. We listened to it hundreds of times. It's incredible to see it all here after all these decades.

I'm fighting prostate cancer myself. Dan's was very aggressive and he had one of the best cancer centers in the world in Boston. Men: get your PSA number ASAP. Even if you're young, you need a baseline. Don't delay. I have a chance because my team and I caught it early because I had a PSA test earlier than most guys and we could see a trend. Again, men, get your PSA test!

Have to share a memory....At one of the concerts I attended, Dan was sitting at the piano and began to play the intro to "Same Old Lang Syne." The audience responded with an excited murmur. Dan kept tinkling away on the piano and said, "This is probably the song I get asked about the most. People wonder if this really happened to me." He paused and said, "Naw, it is just a song I wrote." There was a huge groan/sigh of disappointment from the crowd as obviously so many connect with this song and the belief that Dan was writing about his own experience. He let the disappointment sink in and then said, "Just kidding!" and launched into the song. A very special and poignant moment for all in attendance.

While I have posted these feelings before, I must give Thanks to Dan for allowing me, to share his fear during his early days. It was a concert @ Rich Stadium in the early 70's. He followed Seals n Croft, the stadium was rocking. Dan came on and started with a ballad. The crowd ignored him. It was then that, we connected visually. The fear in his eyes was almost palatable. He stopped playing. Suddenly, the fear disappeared and he broke out with Part of the Plan.....the rest is history. RIP Dan.

Gene, hard to find the right words watching this!!! Priceless.. Dan in concert in 1976.. I am mesmerized. I fell in love with his music in Fall 1975. I love his early music.. He was one of the best songwriter- singers we will ever have. No one writes or sings like him. He played so many instruments and just always blew me away when I had the pleasure to see him in person. It is a bit hard, still, for me to watch him.. he is missed so so much.. Thank you this priceless video. EVER ON.

I too had the privilege of seeing Dan, on the NETHERLANDS tour at the Blossom near Cleveland, Ohio. He opened with NETHERLANDS and one other song on piano, asking the audience to please quiet down, that there would be lots of time to rock when the band came out. He did one song on acoustic guitar and the audience was still yapping for rock. He was visibly upset and SLAMMED his guitar in a stand. It rung out over the audience as he walked to the mike. Aside from the ringing of the guitar, you could hear a pin drop as he said "I'll be back with the band" in disgust. It was a moment I will never forget, and in spite of the audience, he came back out and tore the place apart. He was brilliant...

@@LosBomberoArtist can be temperamental as that is part of the personality and I think it is disrespectful of the audience to do that at the concert ! Rude of the audience actually. I have seen other famous musicians/ singer/songwriters be upset with the audience while beginning to sing a ballad ! It took me back a bit by the way he said to the audience to stop the yelling but then understand why they felt the need to say it !!

Gene, who are you and how do you have this!? We were there. This was maybe the second time my BFF and I saw DF. If memory serves, I believe the first was when he opened for the Eagles. I would go so far as to say we were groupies... probably saw him over 50 times after that. We were kids and he was our world. And we snuck a cassette recorder into the Capital that night (and many after that! I have quite a bootleg collection somewhere LOL shhhh!) and have probably listened to this hundreds of times on that little tinny cassette player. My BFF was a photographer, and would sneak her camera in, too. I'd forgotten about all the intermittent comments he made, and his interactions with the audience. At one point, we had every second of this concert memorized note for note, comment for comment. As I watch this, it all comes flooding back. I'm floored. Totally floored. Thank you for posting this!!! He got me through more tough times that I can remember, and continues to do so in my old age. This is making me feel young and old at the same time. Only hope that he knows how he effected so many of us.

I got hooked on Fogelberg in the mid 70's. I saw him live 3 times and have all of his albums through the mid 80's. He left us much too soon, and coincidentally ten years to the day after one of my favorite female musicians...Nicholette Larson, whom I was also fortunate enough to see live before she left us. Their music will live on forever.

There is a song called Lessons Learned off the "Nether Lands" album, which was recorded in May 1977. This convert was recorded March 20, 1976. Go to the 24:02 mark of the concert and listen to the LEGENDARY exchange Dan has with someone in the audience. Remarkable!! you just don't see people interact with their fans like this any more. Fogelber loved his fans ... and, of course, vice versa.

Thank you, Gene. Saw Dan at Red Rocks, Colorado circa 1980, when I was in college at Regis. It was a benefit concert for Gary Hart for President. Wow, did he choose badly and waste that money. It was the best concert I ever saw, though. This video brought those memories flooding back, along with one of the first dates with my wife at his concert in Poplar Creek, Illinois. (married 26 years now). I feel sorry for my kids, that they don't get music like this anymore. Romantic, but yet masculine. Spiritual, philosophical, but not doctrinaire We were so blessed to have him.

I saw Dan on this tour in Chicago at the Auditorium Theater. To say I'm a fan is not saying it . I'd have his new LPs soon as I could get my hands on them, and put the precious vinyl on my turntable, and sit with the jacket and lyrics...just taking everyone note, every chord. How did he know what my life was about, what she and I were saying - doing, just how I felt? There are tunes like The Last Nail (Laurie), Ever On, As The Raven Plays, Wysteria, Netherlands, Innocent Age, Scarecrow's Dream, and Dan talks about "Lessons Learned", how stunning is that tune, and he was apparently working on it. To say Dan's music will be missed is to not say enough. The waiting for his next album is gone from our lives. Ever On friends. Smile. Ron K.

His solos, on piano and guitar, we're outstanding. His first his first 3 albums helped me through some rough emotional times. Always have appreciated Dan and the music he created and left us. I first saw Dan solo acoustic during the Netherlands tour. Blessed enough to have great seats ,his remarkable talents were not lost on this 'Rock and Roller'.He disarmed me with 'Plastered in Paris','Don't Reverse the Charge', and 'Theme For Black Orpheus'. I left the Philadelphia Academy of Music with a broader sense of songwriting and performing than I'd had before I walked in.What was in my opinion 'chick music' had woven it's way to my very core by the end of the show.

I saw Daniel Fogelberg (solo and with a band at diverse venues in Northeast Ohio), and met him briefly, along with Timothy Schmidt, backstage at the State Theater in Cleveland. Very nice guys. Dan seemed pretty drained. I could tell he leaves every drop of emotion on stage. He was exactly my age, and I was shocked to see that relatively so few people noticed when he passed. What a privilege to have been around to watch this supremely talented man sing and play his unique and so moving compositions in person. Dan provided the soundtrack for my 20s and 30s. A section of my heart permanently closed in December 2007. To think, he was in the middle of writing Lessons Learned when this show was recorded... that brought tears to my eyes. And hits like Leader of the Band, Same Old Lang Syne, and Longer weren't even on the horizon yet. Exquisite composer, brilliant musician, and beautiful human being. 💜💚💛

Can't believe I found this... thank you SO much for sharing!! I was actually at this concert at the Capitol and still have the ticket stub. There's some banter with the audience related to his a later song "Lessons Learned" which appeared on Netherlands, which I distinctly remember being referenced. Still recall how Gambler was amazing with everyone singing. He did that for most shows, but it stuck out for me that night probably since it was the first time I saw him. Remember that Vikings jersey as well. Been a huge Fogelberg fan since Homefree, and was lucky to see him more than a dozen times through the 70's, 80's and 90's. I live in northern NJ, and saw him at Princeton Univ. in 1978, as well as pretty much all of the major arena venues in the NY, NJ area... the Garden, Meadowlands, Nassau Col, PNC Arts Center, Waterloo Village (big tent concert a few times), Beacon Theater with Tim Weisberg (one of those shows is actually on DVD). That Beacon show might have been the last time I saw him in concert. His voice was starting to strain more around that time, but he was still great. Lol... I actually scalped (bought) a ticket for his concert at Carnegie Hall for $35, which was a ton of money at the time. Related to this particular show, I actually have both Fools Gold "records" as well, which I think are great in their own right ("Fools Gold" & "Mr. Lucky"; they're both available on CD, although I think I got the latter on Amazon as an import. You might want to check them out if interested; they're both worth it. The first one has two other songs that Fogelberg wrote or co-wrote, never recorded by Dan.) Just amazing...

I falling in and out of love to Dan's music all through my teens back in the early 70's up till his double (vinyl) album "The innocent Age", after that I kinda lost touch, so this really is a much appreciated walk down memory lane. "Thank-You". ....A line that will live with me all my days "The woman is like the night she comes and goes, she'll break your heart and never know"....

I have been feeling quite depressed lately and I needed this concert to lift my spirit. Dan helped so many people with his music by touching their hearts when no one else could. I thank you so much for uploading this video of Dan.

Thanks so much for sharing these concert clips!!! I was unlucky to have not heard Dan's music until the late 70's (why?! I have no clue!!) but that first song hooked me ! Been a huge fan ever since, but always wished I had seen him in concert during this phase of his career, thanks for making that possible!!what an extraordinary talent this man possessed!!

My new all time favorite KZfaq find. I love Dan Fogelberg ever since I saw him at the Dr. Pepper Concert Series at Central Park NY back on July 9th1977. What an awesome place for an awesome concert. Outside with great weather listening to some great music. I will never forget it.

Gene..I am in awe and mesmerized. That this exists with such well preserved audio is fantastic. I heard his first 3 albums in 1976 but did not get to see him until 1978 in Albany, performing solo just like this. Though I would see him again touring in Boston Common playing bluegrass and at George Mason after Exiles, this video is how I always see him in my mind's eye. I was unable to make it out to Peoria for this year's commemoration but hope to put something together here in Westchester, N.Y. to honor the 40th anniversary of Souvenirs. Thanks !

Saw Dan with Fools Gold for the first time in 1974 opening for The Eagles. St John's Arena on OSU campus was a crappy venue for acoustics and the crowd was in typical hurry-up-and-bring-on-the-Eagles mode, but after about 3 songs they settled down and Fogelberg had us for life. I even bought an album by Fools Gold, good stuff! Those first 4 albums by Dan was some of the best music ever recorded. Thanks for posting this concert and helping Dan live on forever.

This is a very soulful concert, I caught Dan early on in 1971....a fried of mine I owned a record store and would give me his demo's...so in effect my very first listen to dan emerged in the form of a record store demo copy of Portraits given from friend to friend. My son Todd is now 44 and living in Montana along with my two wondrous grandchildren Ethan 8 and Katie 6. Me I still play and write.....this one is for Cynthia, Harley, and Cynthia....Thanks for sharing... Morning Light by Terrance Hill 11/31/2014 Oh half a life well contrived inside the many sepia colored walls of this pastoral kingdom There the fallen angels rise to embrace the kind morning star fleeing the earth in the last of night It is out there my heart goes to wing, past wooden cross, under a summer’s pale full moon… I stand alone on our shore, as the first sea birds wing to sand, I hear a tune of the meadow larks song; I witness the spirits dancing there as children… Oh my lovely child why has the blue abandoned my eyes, So I wonder, and believe the smile once cast upon me, never lived In the fury and blindness that’s pierced me, all along I’ve become an empty room of ashes, left for the wind entering the cracked window to scatter… My Imagination is a Monastery and I am its Monk - you must explain my metaphysics to yourself. I am in expectation of Prometheus every day.” And the forlorn take solace in my arms, which were lost to me just a day as I dreamt Of the fields of my youth wherein milkweed grew tall, and the Starling’s feather tickled my nose… My journey has cost but a pittance compared to the iron cauldron’s burning touch! The sun filled skies of autumn have laid down their blinding glare across the road and aft, These many pilgrims bound for kinder lands have found heroes to bind the cause As heroes all gave a shout to the golden rod and wisteria… I entered the forest’s narrow dirt path fired by an eagerness children practice, Holding firmly, gently, the Childs trusting hand, concerned for deliverance, From a planets determined course, a navigator of swirling seas of sadness, Breaking over the jagged slip of rocks, which broke many who sailed near their cove… An angry wind is forming, claiming devotion to compassion, yet all hatred burns a fast fire, Lo I am with you always, came forth the repentant cry, and departed into mist Once temple doors closed, and saintly faithful few stood accused of yesterday’s alien cry... A fading glory has passed across the doorsteps and guardian gates of the shimmering stairs to heaven have been replaced by invitation to enter the darkness untouched by a harvest moon’s soft glowing light…

what an amazing video! Loved this guy for decades. My wife's favorite song is "The Reach" from the Innocent Age. In 1997 or 1999 we were in Vancouver WA and saw an ad in a newspaper that he was giving a concert at the Sokol Blosser Winery in Portland OR. I still remember my wife's friend saying, "Do you want to go? We could watch your kids." I declined and missed my only chance to see him. In 1994 I bought his 1977 album "Nether Lands" on a cassette tape at a thrift store. I had never heard any of the songs. So this 1977 album was new music to us in 1994! I loved "Promise Made" and my wife loved "Scarecrow's Dream" Thanks Gene.

24 and there's so much more. Thanks for posting. Awesome. I saw Dan for the first time just before this show, at Avery Fisher Hall on Jan. 28. It was great to see what I experienced 38 years ago. Tough to remember. It is pretty amazing to realize just how young he was at the time and to see him in his prime.

Thanks so much for posting this wonderful video....although watching this breaks my heart. I used to see him in concert every year. The last time I saw him was in Chicago at Navy Pier June 2003. As he closed the concert he said, "See you next time." Well, I was looking for news of his upcoming tour the next year and did not see one. I went to his web site and there I read his words about his advanced prostate cancer. I adored his concerts and this video brought it all back to me, as bittersweet as the memories are now. His music was the soundtrack of my life.

Stunning, superb and as for other great artists - will stand the test of time! This is akin to finding The Holy Grail! Tim - as a Dan fan of over 40 yrs and since Homefree, this is the best group of videos one could have hoped for. Very much, Miss Dan Our Man - who became a large part of my life for 4 decades, much like the Beatles, James Taylor, Bruce and the Eagles. (Good Company!!)
