He admits his one loss made him a better wrestler. Everyone takes a loss at some point. It's how you respond is the key.

I bet 10 million dollars that we will never see another olympics where a freestyle wrestler will win gold and go unscored upon throughout the tournament with even half the brutal competition that Gable had in 1972 .........

If you are going for a Greek comparison, you mean Theogenes. He was an Ancient Greek wrestler and boxer renowned for his victories and strength. Leonidas was a king and military man from Sparta.

That Iranian he was talking about was my father....however he didn't verse him since my father then got in trouble with the King of Iran and wasn't allowed to wrestled at the 1972 Olympics. My father claims that he would have won since he did more techniques than Dan Gable. But he doesn't say that Dan Gable was bad, he said that he was dedicated and really great at what he did.

Owens thoroughly and convincingly beat him in the finals though. It wasn't some fluke...and Owens dropped two weight classes just so he could face Gable that year.

Gurvinder Parmar Enh. “Dropped two weight classes to face Gable.” Who knows why he wrestled that class that year. Maybe he had the flu and lost a bunch of weight by accident.

Getting distroid by Larry negated all previous wins in the minds of all past and future wrestlers. it was almost as if Dan and his record never existed. And he never fully recovered mentally, very sad : (

@davidroeshot I'm an Iowan and wrestled in Iowa and would love to say Iowa, but you know there's great wrestling ANYwhere. Iowa, Pennsylvania (where it's extremely good), Ohio, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Illinois and Wisconsin has the great reputations. So does South Dakota and that state has very little population, but they had a pair of greats in Randy Lewis and Lincoln McIravey.

@jurom7 Karelin was a monster, no doubt. I always have been impressed by the Russian or Soviet wrestlers then. Ivan Medved, Sergei and Antoli Belaglozov and many many more. Karelin was a Greco Roman man but i've always enjoyed the freestyle wrestling a little more, but thats just me and i respect the Greco style too. I think i was a little buzzed on Samuel Adams when i made that bold post. LOL! Nice to see someone so knowledgeable about wrestling, it's a great sport. Cheers.

@jurom7 nothing negative against karelin b/c he was a beast. here is the thing not many many humans have karelin's genetics. he is 286lb with less than 10% bodyfat. however, many humans have gable's genetics. he has to rely more on skill than pure brute strength like karelin. no wrestler in greco roman rules has the physical power to pick alexander up and throw him. many men have gable's power, but not nearly the skill. Gable's accomplishments are therefore more impressive.

Watanabe from Japan, Olympic champion of 1964, was never scored upon EVER. Seriously. Gable was great too, but Watanabe was out of this world. And then Robin Reed, Olympic champion of 1924 was never beaten by anyone, at any time, of any size. Reed could possibly have been better than both Gable and Watanabe.

I take nothing away from Cael, but to compare is impossible. Title IX completely destroyed collegiate wrestling. There were 363 teams, but by the time Cael wrestled is was down to 229. Almost 2k less wrestlers. Wrestling in the US was nothing in the states, but Gable made it more mainstream. Plus I'm 100% positive Iowa State didn't jinx him before he went to the nationals his final year.
@adsotbraz
@adsotbraz 3 жыл бұрын
Title IX was the most unfair, feminist agenda policy in NCAA history. It took away what men worked hard to build for decades and gave it to women without them ever having to word hard to build anything.
