I started watching Dan in 2011 and the fandom was absolutely feral. I'm honestly surprised that him and Phil still live together because I can't imagine how uncomfortable of a situation that was to barely be able to interact in public without it ending up in a "phan proof" compilation.

I remember being in the fandom and every week we'd be arguing with other people in the fandom to take down their conspiracy posts or "proof". it was an odd dynamic especially bc so many of us were queer. We would make gay jokes about everyone but then when things felt more serious to us we would try and "do the right thing". like there was an old video that i think dan had deleted and asked that it not be re-uploaded anywhere bc it had some personal information in it so every time someone would come across a repost of it we would tell each other so we could all report it and hopefully take it down. and i honestly think we were so adamant about "protecting" (i don't really think we were helping but we thought we were) dan and phil bc a lot of us were in situations where it would be genuinely dangerous for us to be outed and it was honestly a little stressful sometimes because we had fear for them and their potential safety/mental health but honestly even that is probably bc of parasocial relationships and projection. All the people within the circle i was in were queer and out online but most of them weren't out irl and we all made assumptions about what their boundaries were based off what our own experience was which was like.. definitely not ideal and lead to problems.

His videos gave me comfort and safety as a 15 year old. I remember feeling that maybe I don't need to have it all figured out and maybe everything will work out after all. Dan managed word out some of the thoughts and fears I couldn't, while still being funny and making me feel seen through a screen. Also the fact that I learned English through both Dan and Anthony is still blows my mind! Thank you for being what I needed as a lost young scared human.

This interview still gives me chills. Dan is such an articulate speaker and Anthony is great with his questions, his ability to sincerely listen, and his clear friendship with Dan being something he uses to make Dan feel comfortable. I appreciate the very introspective Dan of today because he reminds me of the growth that I realized I went on in the past with him without even knowing he was growing too. He was an adult making content that I found relatable and comforting during a period where I was a scared teenager. I was such an anxious and scared person, but Dan (and Phil) provided a world of content that made me feel understood and safe. They made me want to try writing again and they’re the reason I fell in love with it after a long period of depression and are quite honestly the reason why I think I’ve found my passion in life. BUT- to know Dan was growing and struggling behind the scenes. To know that while he was honest about so much, there was also so much hidden. The fact that despite a lot of struggling and difficult moments he still made content that has made millions of people happy and changed so many lives? I can’t thank him enough. And as an adult I want to meet and hug Dan and Phil not in my teenage fangirl way (I mean there’d be a bit of that that would likely resurface lol) but in a genuine, sincere, honest to god grip of a strong hug. Because they provided a safe space for me to grow and feel safe and overcome a lot of my mental health obstacles. And I suppose that’s a thing that’s still on my bucket list but for almost a different and more meaningful reason: hug Dan as hard as I can (which might be difficult, I’m a 5’4” 130 pound woman and he’s taller than my father by many inches lol) and tell him “Thank you for giving me that space to feel understood and to grow. Thank you for the content you made for me when I most needed it, even though you were struggling. I hope you take care of yourself and start making the things that feel the most fulfilling to you.”

I'm a millennial too and I feel so glad for the progress I've seen in LGBTQ+ acceptance and attitude since childhood. My guy friend since the past 21 years told me recently that I give off lesbian vibes and encouraged me to explore it in case it's an undiscovered part of myself and it felt surprisingly wholesome. I think the biggest reason that convo could happen is because we know eachother so well but also that it is so much less taboo now to be gay or talk about it. I'm open to the possibility of falling in love with a woman one day but so far that hasn't happened yet.
@StellaMarisma
@StellaMarisma Жыл бұрын
Someone telling you you give off "lesbian vibes" and suggests you explore your sexuality because of it sounds very presumptuous. A "vibe" is not a sexuality, I don't know how many times someone has seemed gay to me only to end up being straight, so our perceptions of others' sexualities can be extremely inaccurate. Like why did your friend say "lesbian" vibes? Out of the long, long list of sexualities, why immediately assume you're a closeted lesbian? Besides, it's really not his or anyone's place to guess at your sexuality and then make suggestions to you based off their assumption. Have you ever actually been attracted to other women before? Had crushes on them growing up or been physically attracted to them? Have your crushes all exclusively been male? These are questions and conversations you're meant to have with yourself, not with a friend who may just be projecting his queerness onto you, which I've noticed is an unfortunate tendency of a lot of LGBT+ members (I'm LGBT+ myself btw so I've witnessed this behavior firsthand.)

Dan and Phil straight up got me through being a teenager. I had horrible mental health issues, and they were my escape. I had a tumblr dedicated to them for years lmao. At interactive introverts I got the chance to meet them, and by that point my mental health was much better (and I was an adult) and I still broke down crying because what they had done for me as a teenager meant so much. I wanted to tell them, but all I got out was a shaky "thank you, for everything" and I'm not even a crier lol I saw we're all doomed in Phoenix. I remember back in 2013/2014 being 17/18 at college, Dan & Phil's radio one show was my favourite thing to watch on a Sunday. I would go to the laundry room with my laptop and sit and watch them while I waited for my clothes to wash and dry. Having them be part of my routine helped keep me going when I was in one of my worst places mentally as the routine and the feeling of not being alone meant so much to me then. Ahh I remember tuning in for their radio show too! I still remember the songs ppl would create fanmade videos for and send in! Dan and Phil's videos - as well as those of a bunch of other youtubers circa 2012-2014 - likely helped me way more than I realized at the time, bc looking back, I definitely had anxiety but didn't know that it was a thing others experienced or how to talk about it. Seeing Dan talk about relatable feelings made me feel less alone and distracted me from my own overthinking/thought spirals. And now watching this, I totally agree with Dan that the jokes about depression/mental health helped put some of the mental health terms on the table for me to eventually finally seek therapy in more recent years :) so big, big thanks to Dan for being one of the sources of joy in my life in those vulnerable preteen to teenager years and inadvertently teaching me things about life :')

Even if there are people who take issue with you or ridicule you, you can go through life making deeper and less fearful connections. After coming out to the people closest to me, I realized I stopped approaching new people holding back a part of myself and wondering, " should I come out to them?" I just approached them as myself and let them see me without pretense and it was so awesome. I wasnt going crazy, there were other people experiencing these same things, and i wasnt irreparably broken. Eventually, after i graduated high school, I ended up telling my parents ab all of my mental health issues and now 4 yrs later am doing so much better and have been in therapy for almost 2 yrs, but Dans videos were so great for me as a teenager, because they were a place where i was no more "broken" than anyone else commenting ab their mental health issues.
