Hey folks, thanks for watching. Before you comment . . . yes, I'm aware that the intro and outro are obnoxious, and that the music is annoying, etc. Unfortunately I don't have the raw footage anymore and can't fix it. Despite that, I hope you can enjoy the content. If not, well, best of luck in life.
If, despite the flaws, you appreciate video, I would sure love it if you would support my writing. Search for S. James Nelson on Amazon. Thanks!
Dan Wells at Life, the Universe, and Everything, February 13, 2010.
Thanks for watching. If you like the stuff on my channel, I'd love it if you bought my book: The Demigod Proving, available as a Kindle eBook at Amazon.com: amzn.to/nXMRbO.
Thanks!

I've gotten lots of comments about the music before and at the end of videos. Thank you for the feedback. Unfortunately I don't have the raw footage any more and can't fix the videos, but trust me that future videos won't have the same problem.

"Brandon Sanderson, he's a fantasy writer you may have heard of." I'm pretty sure this is exactly how Dan would say that today, only he'd be grinning and the crowd laughing.

Seriously? I am just glad that Dan is taking the time to share this information with us. Most writers would have tried to market this kind of literary advice. Fortunately, here we are on youtube watching it for free.

WHY THE MUSIC
@kell_checks_in
@kell_checks_in Ай бұрын
Agreed, but it does eventually fade out. I have sensory processing disorders and wicked sensitive hearing (short version: my central nervous system is busted) and have to forego MANY videos with blocking music through the entirety of the video. (WHY do people do this?) At least for these, it stops so we can focus on what's being said.

Been struggling understanding how to outline. He said “your resolution is not the end, it’s the climax” and it finally makes sense.

Watching this again, 2 years after it was recorded, and a month after seeing it live at LTUE 2012. It's that good, and motivating. Thanks Dan.

Great information. I've watched these videos numerous times, because it always helps to remind myself of the awesome way that Dan breaks down story structure.

I friggin shouted when I saw his name there! Forgot he was a part of that book. How awesome is it these writers can connect (even indirectly)! The trust I have in Matt Colville gives me even more motivation for trying out this story structure 😊

Intro's over at 2:35. From there on, I see similarities with K.M. Weiland's approach, so I'm curious to see where the two methods will deviate. Good video! I'll definitely watch the rest of the series.

This is good. I'm a big writing excuses fan... but I would say that John Truby's 7 steps are a little more precise. He also has a 22 step structure which can follow the 7, but it's pretty full on!

Yes the music lasts too long. I still get all the information that I need from the videos, and it's not quite that annoying to me. I suspect it's not nearly as annoying to you as you would have us all believe. It's a free video on KZfaq. Thank you to the person who posted!

Discovery vs Outline writers. I was watching one video where they forced discovery writers to use outlines and outline writers to use the discovery method in order to improve their writing. I guess I've always been a discovery writer because I'd use notebooks and if I didn't just start I didn't fill the whole notebook up.

Apart from the fact that maybe one should actually say factually true things about the plot of the examples one is using, this is definitely good advice.

Gabe, as I say in the video, this system is not mine; I did not make it up, and therefore no one can steal it from me. It's a common technique which I assume Cathy is also drawing on for her books. I know you're trying to help, and I appreciate that, but angry attacks and crass name-calling are not the way I want to be represented online. Your language is out of line, and I encourage you to apologize to Cathy. Note: I do not use gmail, so this is a new account I set up to respond here.

A point of order on your production. Your music, if that is what you call it, is supposed to be completely faded down by the time you start speaking!

I'm Cathy Yardley, author of ROCK YOUR PLOT. Lots of teachers tackle this plot structure, including Jack Bickham, Robert McKee, Deb Dixon, Larry Brooks, Syd Field, Mary Buckham, etc. None of us "created" the plot point system. We just have different techniques for getting to those points. I have been in contact with Mr. Wells, and he's aware of the misunderstanding. So if you could just stop posting that I'm a "lying, thieving bitch"... that'd be great.
