The Dana 60 axle under the Stuburban needed some stronger parts and some TLC. We show you how to completely disassemble the Chevy Dana 60 axle and put it back together. The open differential gets upgraded with a beefy Yukon Grizzly locker, the axles get a chromoly shaft upgrade, and we installed Yukon Hardcore Locking hubs. Yukon Gear and Axle had some of the best parts available and we upgraded/rebuilt nearly every component on this Dana 60.
Parts used in this build:
YGLD60-4-35 Yukon Grizzly Locker
YHC70001 Yukon Hardcore Locking Hub set
YA W46100 Yukon 4340 Chrome-Moly replacement outer stub
YA W46100 Yukon 4340 Chrome-Moly replacement inner axle
YA W48208 Yukon 4340 Chrome-Moly replacement inner axle
YA W48210 Yukon Master Overhaul kit for Dana 60

I am so glad I’m not the only one that absolutely hates chrome!! Every one I no says they love chrome & it looks so pretty!! I had a buddy that had a blazer that had a chrome differential cover!! He was going down the hyway & it started to leak on him & he didn’t no!! It ended up locking the rear end up solid & ended up rolling the blazer & totaling it!! He was in the hospital for a couple weeks but finally was able to make it back home!! He was so lucky!! I can tell you he won’t even but one piece of chrome on a vehicle now!!

I’m not completely against chrome, but I am familiar with its inability to seal properly. It can be made to seal with a little work. I grew up around muscle cars and chrome; I like it in moderation.

I made a case spreader & I was glad that I did!! I have seen a guy do several axels using a big hydraulic press!! By gently pressing on the housing with the hydraulic press it will spread the case!!! Definitely check your Carrier bearing races!! One of them are none for coming loose in the housing & spinning in the housing causing them to wear the housing out!! I took a 4.10 gear out of my Dana 60 & installed 4.56 gear along with an ARB locker!! I also put all new stuff in the axel!! The only thing I have not done yet is up grade the outer 30 spline axel shaft to the 35 spline & put the Yukon lock outs on!! I will do that when ever something happens to one!! I do love the Yukon lock outs so I might end up doing sooner though!! I have 5 Dana 60 axels but they are getting way harder to find them for sure!!! Awesome detailed video guys!! Way to go!!!

Awe, shucks. 😆 The gears are a little intimidating in the beginning, but it’s really not bad. If you have an axle that already has gears installed, use all the existing shims as a starting point. If you have an empty axle and you’re putting gears in, you get to start with a guessing game. We highly recommend using setup bearings, or making some; It saves a ton of time. A case spreader is handy, but not necessary. Just remember to add preload if you’re able to drop the carrier in without a spreader.

It would be much easier just to use a pinion depth gauge than to paint your ring gear and do it two or three times. I also noticed that you didn't do pinion run out to make sure you have proper torque spec on your pinion bearing. Nice video though, very informative.

@RecklessWrenchGarage
@RecklessWrenchGarage 4 жыл бұрын
I am using H1 wheels which have a really high offset (lots of backspacing). One benefit of the dually axle is not needing to re-center those wheels to clear anything. The more common wheels people run with mid-low offset will expose the brakes. In most cases, it won’t hurt anything.

I don't take much stock in that needing pre heat 300-400 degrees on the differential to weld mild steel to it and the reason being is I've welded 14 bolt tubes to the center chunk in 40 degree weather no pre heat and no post blanket wrap , welded Ford dana 60 knuckles up with mild steel plate and welded high steer arms directly to them intact that was my first welding of mild steel to a cast iron and I did post wrap but they left out in 30 degree weather . I've not had one of those welds crack . The only true benefit I see with 400 degree torch is it burns much of the grease off for weld prep ...I just used dawn dish detergent and then a wheel until it shines like new then weld away being careful not to get it to hot and warp .

@RecklessWrenchGarage

That’s purely preference. A spool will make it more difficult to turn. If you have a mechanical locker or a spool, it’s going to pull in one direction when on the throttle and the other when you let off the throttle.

whyisntenstavalible No problem. Just keep in mind, the offset/backspacing of the wheel will determine body clearance. If you have a wide, low offset wheel, it will stick out quite a bit and possibly hit the fender. The mounting surface on the hub is nearly flush with the fender.

That’s a 78 Courier street/strip truck I’ve been procrastinating on for far too long. After the Suburban and Ranger are back on the road, we will have video of the Courier.

Why were you rotating the pinion when you were checking the backlash... Was that just to show the dial indicator moving on video?
@RecklessWrenchGarage
@RecklessWrenchGarage 6 жыл бұрын
Jeremy Downs That was just to show the gauge moving to give an idea what we were doing. With the camera view, and our hands in the way, you couldn’t really see anything when we were checking backlash.

Yes. After a while I replaced the rear hubs with single wheel hubs to match the track width front-rear.

I see you have a dually front dana 60, how or what did you do to match your axles width on the rear axle?
@RecklessWrenchGarage
@RecklessWrenchGarage 5 жыл бұрын
The front and rear axles are both off a dually. The rear currently sits a bit more narrow than the front. We will be swapping the rear dually hubs for 14 bolt srw hubs to match the track width better.
@mudsta9828
@mudsta9828 5 жыл бұрын
They also make a conversion hub for the front dana 60 to go from a dually to a srw width, but they are expensive like 600 - 800 in parts to do the conversion.
@RecklessWrenchGarage
@RecklessWrenchGarage 5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t make the front narrow. Although, if I wanted to, I would just get the srw front hubs. They’re a direct replacement. As it sits, the wheels would have to be recentered to run srw hubs.
