When is it OK to get a bigger container?

The thing that has changed my home more than anything else has been accepting the reality of the space that I have. I call it "The Container Concept." Declutter until stuff fits easily within the natural boundaries of my home.
Then answer isn't to get a bigger container, but that doesn't mean I can NEVER get a bigger container. In this video, I'm talking about how to know when it's okay to get a bigger container and how to choose the new container.

I have found that decluttering makes for many empty containers. It is amazing to me how many containers I have that are empty. As I go, for now the empty containers are in the garage until I know what containers I need and will use in the end. You have really have helped me. Your take it there now and not pulling it all out is a game changer for me. When I watch other people and they say pull everything out, I cringe.

I'm surprised she throws them in like that. To me putting them in nicely feels like part of the consolidation step she always advocates for. It's just making everything fit more nicely. It's also esthetically pleasing, but that's not the main point of doing it. It's just easier to grab the correct number that way. But I think there's two kinds of people when it comes to tidying up: those who want the putting away part to be as easy as possible, and those who want the grabbing stuff when you need it part to be as easy as possible. Often both can be improved upon, but only one can be maximised.

I find myself thinking of the drawer as the container and the cutlery insert as the organizer. In your book you are very clear that decluttering and organizing are different things. So I find myself thinking the container didn’t change, the organizing tool changed. Or maybe the container in the new house was bigger than the old house so the organizing tool needed to be bigger. Not that it makes a difference for I do so love the ways you have helped me wrap my brain around thinking about stuff. Thank you.

Yes, we did this too, for everything in the kitchen. We have our 4 most used pots &pans, 4 big plates, 4 little plates, 6 bowls, only our nice 6 person cutlery set, limited number of glassware etc. Everything is so easy to put away like that, and so easy to grab. It's enough for when we have 1 or 2 surprise guests, but little enough to be able to clean the kitchen with one dishwasher load if we've used everything up (ok, minus the biggest pots and pans, they can be handwashed quickly). We have some spare things in the attic for when we'll get to host parties again. That stuff doesn't need to be cluttering up our kitchen 24/7 and make our daily lives harder though, as that's way above our clutter thresholds.

My Granny split her sterling flatware among me and two cousins before she died. It is very treasured. It is a set of 8. I bought 2 extra teaspoons. That is all we use. We didn't save it for special times. We eat from it everyday. Thank you, Granny! I have a theory that it helps us to stay healthy. I gargle with colloidal silver when I have an itchy throat, and it usually goes away. So, it makes sense that eating from silver is healthy. When I first started decluttering I read a book that said to use your best and get rid of the rest. This is not to put down the use of stainless steel. Everyone has different preferences. This is just what I do!

Yes! The colloidal silver convinced me to donate the stainless and use the actual silver-ware. But what I did was go to estate sales and buy grandma's silver! The set I'm using now, is a ~12 piece setting that I bought for $25 Prior to that, I picked up mismatched pieces which go into our lunch coolers, and into my desk at work, & a 4 piece setting into the luggage so I always have silver utensils. @Victoria Oliver Yes, they do tarnish, but what I try to do is rotate as I notice the tarnish, those are the pieces I will use at the next meal. Then when I hand wash, if it's still tarnished, just a little extra scrub rubs the tarnish off!

My container that is too small is my whole kitchen. I feel like I have too much stuff because some of it lives in the office (neatly on a baker’s rack), but if I lived in an home with more than two lower cabinets, I wouldn’t feel like keeping a food processor that I do use a least a few times a month is too much. There is only so much decluttering I can do and still be a person who cooks actual meals. (And bakes as a hobby.)

Definitely a tricky thing! We've decided to store some things that we don't use very often up in the attic, labeled + easily accessible, so that helps make our day-to-day space more functional. But we were also able to add a lot of shelving on one wall to be most of our food + pot storage. And definitely, prioritizing things you actually use! If that means that the office maybe can't hold as many things (because it has to be kitchen overflow), that is okay too :)

Yes! Small kitchens are an issue! One of the things we had to do when we moved in here was to put the refrigerator in the dining room, because it wouldn't fit in the kitchen! (They are divided by a wall) so in the refrigerator spot, we added a thrifted lower cabinet & a bookshelf perpendicular to each other. Worked for many years! That's been replaced by a rolling cart with a stainless counter top, which can be pulled out, houses all the appliances, like the food processor & vac seal unit, use the appliances on that counter top then put the appliance back on the shelf, & push back into place. Can wheel it to the sink, or into the dining room, wherever I need it to go! And, we even added a power strip to the cart, so multiple appliances can be used at the same time, and just plug the power strip cord into whatever nearest socket! It's a total game changer!

The "live with it for a while" is a very good concept, I had some utensils that when I purchased I regretted at first because they weren't what I was used to using. The older ones were more narrow, lighter but kept bending at the stem whereas the newer ones were more solid, heavier but as I found over time didn't bend when using so they actually became my favorite ones to use.

My husband and I are both crickets so we do line up our silverware but when you were talking about how it might drive people like me crazy that you don't I was thinking "I can live with that but I could not open a package and just start putting atuff in it". It a great reminder that videos I watch are edited and I shouldn't assume that I know the whole story. Truly though I really love your honest and real life approach in your videos and your books. I think the one thing you've said that has had the biggest impact on me is the idea of "If I needed this would I even remember that I had one". It has helped me let go of so many things that I was keeping just in case because truthfully if I needed them I wouldn't remember that I had them at all.

You, your videos and the info within are amazing! However my favorite is the end usually, where we get the inside scoop! Lol So fun! 💜

Love this! I have been trying to unpack from a move. I have been in the same problem with my flatware. I'm happy to know I can give myself permission to get a different container. I'm not decluttered enough so I am getting rid of things as I see what room we have in our house. I love you & have been following you from the blog years ago. You come across as so real and down to earth. You make so much sense to me & I feel like I finally have hope!

Love Dana!! Her method has made SUCH a difference!! I also make 4 fast changes to any room that I enter (move an item to its proper home, move an item to the donate bag, tidy-up something, throw something out, whatever...). That has helped too. I keep a little box by the front door for my grown "minimalist" children, whom I see every week, and put items in the box that I know they want -- that box is emptied every week (either they take the items or the items get donated).

I was thinking how I needed another big crate like the two I had my art supplies & paper for off season clothes. But instead of buying a new one I decided to see if I could declutter my art supplies enough so that they would fit in one. (Totally worked) I'm pretty sure I will need new ones at some point but I'm trying to put it off as long as possible. Lol

You’re making my eye twitch….. I stack my spoons (big/small), forks (big/small) and knives…. set of 8. I actually found a compact silverware caddy and a knife caddy that fit into a small drawer (Target, XOXO brand). It helped me realize how much space I was wasting with a bigger silverware caddies. I do use those bamboo expandable thingies for other items.

Thank you so much for you alternative organizing technique. I am a natural at decluttering, but found some difficulty when we downsized from 2900sqft to 1300sqft. After finding your channel it helped me refocus. I now hear myself saying "tack it there now" every time I pick something up. Also the idea of how much is an organized house worth to me was a game changer. My previous homes had a space for thing that this one does not. I was able to let go of things that I had for decades but rarely used because I no longer have the space and now my home is in order. Thanks again, looking forward to more videos.

Hi Dana, I love your videos, I've been watching them along with Dawn's videos to help me declutter my home. I hear your voice in my head at moments during the day telling me to "take it there now"....I hear myself quoting you to others - like, "better is good" and so on. Thankyou for being so clear and real and allowing others to do it their way but just sharing how it works for you. The "no mess" decluttering system is a game changer because I am very much like that in my methods and after years of working in a "team" with others in my workplace who "need" to pull it all out and then take days to put it all back absolutely drove me crazy. Now my next project is to get my mother's place decluttered and to have her adopt the five minute declutter regularly because she just gets stuck thinking it is an overwhelming and large job but doesn't yet see that baby steps will get her there. I love the "bits" at the end of your videos! I didn't even notice the pyjama pants until you mentioned them so I had to rewind just to go and have a look! Thanks so much!!

Thank you Dana. I might’ve reached a place to let go of a couple serving spoons I don’t love. I only have two drawers in my kitchen and one overflow gadget box. I’ve learned to shop with the container at home in mind. 😉 I’ve decluttered a lot in the last year and replaced items gathering dust with items better suited to our present situation. Thanks!!

Sender was in agreement with you about the bucket of pens.😄 It makes sense to have the container as the limit. I have collected so many pens over the years, that I've discovered a lit of them have dried out. I thought, how many dag gone pens do I actually use at a time anyway? Thank you.
