Your Dad is right these guys were banned from the Ed Sullivan show when they initially agreed to change the lyrics to this song but sang the original lyrics live anyway.. Lead singer Jim Morrison called himself the Lizard King and the band was well known for their drug influenced psychedelic music. He was a poet of the counterculture. Unfortunately Jim was a tragic member of the 27 club and left us far to soon

I'm pretty late to this party, but it goes beyond that....The Doors rarely used a bass player live, and only now and then in the studio. For the most part the bass parts are played by Ray on one keyboard with his left hand, at the same time he's playing the lead part on a different keyboard with his right. They weren't a band interested in overdubs much in the studio, so for the most part, what you hear on record is them laying down the bulk of the track live. Remarkable and somewhat under valued keyboard player.

The Doors is a rabbit-hole, deep, dark and wide. "Light My Fire" is the entrance. This song exploded across the summer of '67 in a way I've seldom seen before or since, and permanently claimed the year as its own. It also pointed up the sharp distinction between FM radio (which played the entire song) and AM radio (which played the single version that had the instrumental solos cut out). Getting into The Doors is one of those rite-of-passage things, which changes your perspective on nearly everything. You can kind of tell by looking at them which teenagers have found The Doors, and which have not. You'll find the Doors fans are much more interesting.
