Here's a few affordable but be very useful ideas: A map of the area. Some baby wipes. Solid sunscreen so you don't have to apply with dirty hands. Body glide. A hat.

You should try Kite making material. It is lighter than Tyvek but just as durable. Just don't get it near anything hot as it will melt. I discovered this while using a small piece for my cooking station and set my hot kettle down on it and it almost melted the material. Using it under my hammock is great.

Dan, I found myself completely distracted, while watching you in the video, with the pullstrings of you underlayer tucked in instead of out. What a fashion faux pax! Finally in desperation, I played the video thru my stereo speakers, taped my eyes closed with Tenacious Tape, and listened to the dialog only. Instant success! Thanks for posting, entertaining and informative as usual.

It is super nice to have a chair with a back rest. I always bring my REI chair with me kayak camping. Mine fits right behind the kayak skeg where very few other things fit.

Thanks, Dan! Got it covered but had to order the buff from Amazon ($20). Mine is a synthetic material and I have to wash it after each trip as it gets pretty dirty and smelly. I did the wash thing on my tyvek and it's amazing how quiet it is vs the crinkly sound when initially used. One good use for my buff is a nice breathable mask during this awful pandemic. I suffocate in those N95 masks and I end doing that crazy thing of dropping it lower exposing my nose just so I can breathe...only if I'm not around other people.

I love my flexlite chair, and even bought the underquilt for it. I'd add a small firekit as I always (read: always) have a campfire (eastern forests, and usually low fire danger.) Also, I switched to the sawyer squeeze because I got tired of my other squeezy filter from MSR either jamming or hard to use or whatever. Added the Cnoc gear water bag for the squeeze and I've got a lightweight, dependable water system.

Yup, NEED the medical kit and water filter. And we should certainly CONSIDER the rest of your recommendations. The chair looks interesting. I would like to recommend the Cascade Hiking table which weighs a couple of ounces (63grams) to you. It keeps the important things out of the dirt and mud. Love your work and personality mate. That's some back yard you have there

Great vid! My #1 is my merino Buff but have to admit I have all and they are all great. Same deal with chair. Wonderful to have but if I am pushing weight, it stays behind and I rely on my butt pad and pack for a chair.

I carry all these items except the tenacious tape- I'm old school and have always carried duck tape. Might have to grab some tenacious tape next. The rest of the items go with me on day hikes, car camping, and backpacking. Love my Buff so much, we ordered them for our Scout troop for rewards for selling popcorn! We also give away water filters and medical kits to the youth for prizes throughout the year. As a previous paramedic, I carry the same kit as you but I added two maxi pads (awesome bleeding control, and good for women to be prepared) and a tourniquet (but only take a tourniquet if you have medical training yo use it). And my Helinox is always the envy of everyone at camp! Great video and I love the energy!

You made a really good point about the water filter. I already have one, and I could totally take it car camping. I mean, why not throw it in? Some of the water sources can be sketchy--or shut off for some reason--and the water filter would give me some more options. Great advice!

I pack my water filter when I stay at my sister's house that has old PVC water pipes. It tastes better, and I get aches all over when I drink straight tap water at her house.

I LOVE my Helinox Chairs. They are expensive but holds 350lbs. I had my sunset chair and my smaller chair and worth the money. 4yrs and still good.

I rocked a REI stool for sometime while backpacking, but then I was at camp with some friends who had actually chairs with backs... Needless to say, I hopped on REI and grabbed one of their flexlite they had on sale. Now I only use my stool for day hikes, but if I'm backpacking, I don't leave home without my chair!

That essential water filter. I grew up dipping water out of any old stream and never got sick, but watching the number of visitors and dogs on the trail these days means I filter that water. I also carry a 1 oz S2S bucket to haul water to camp and filter there, and the bucket works great for washing up away from the stream so sunscreen, bug juice, and such doesn't pollute.

I use a simple 5 by 7 tarp from Walmart to lay out by my hammock it's going to hold up better than thin plastic and I can treat it to keep bugs away too

I do love my REI Flexlite Air chair with one caveat - the feet sink too easily. Solution? four free caps from small plastic containers. At 3" or so diameter, they keep the feet from sinking, weigh nothing and fit in the chair bag. I suppose in a pinch the inside of my hiking shoes would work also for the back feet.

Polycro and Tyvek sheets were already on my "to-get" list. Hard to get Polycro here (unless you're prepared to buy bulk window film) and expensive to order either Polycro or Tyvek from the USA. Trying to find a builder willing to sell me a length of Tyvek building wrap because I've no desire to buy a whole roll. Beginning of last winter I got 3 microfibre neck gaiters - a Buff and a couple of no-brand ones. Bloody awesome things, very versatile. My camp chair's quite long, has a bug mesh attached to it and needs two trees to hold it up. Oh, and you can _sleep_ in it, too. BONUS!

Polycryo is sold as window shrink film here in the states under brands like Duck, 3M, Frost King. I see it on Amazon sold as generic as well. Currently a 7 feet x 10 feet piece is $4.36 US on Amazon for the Duck brand sold for sealing doors or very large windows. Perhaps you can find one of these or similar in New Zealand at big chain or local hardware stores?

I've got about 20 neck gators. I know them as face shields. I also have a few fleece lined ones. They're too thick to wear when exerting yourself in winter but if you're just standing around low activity they're great. All mine are from sa fishing.

I got a chair from Walmart that packs into a little bag about the size of a 2 liter (maybe a little bigger) weighs about 3-4 pounds but only cost me 15$ CND. I love it, sure it's not an ultralight one but man I was surprised how small it packed down and the price, plus I couldn't afford a high-end chair.

Hey Dan, instead of a chair I chose a small hammock. Outdoor Vitals makes one that weighs 14 oz complete including suspension. I can sit or lay on it...my luxury item.

I completely agree with all the items you mention. I already have all of them (maybe different brand) and the best one is definitely my Helinox chair. it may appear to be a luxury item, but i can promise anyone: it is NOT! at least for those who are on bike tours for several thousands of kilometers. then you don't count the grams you carry on your bike. (in fact you will quickly lose a few kilos of just body weight and that will more than compensate for the chair!) One item I would add to the list: a headlamp.

I prefer the Helinox Ground Chair. It doesn’t have the four skinny legs to dig into soft dirt, mud or sand like your “Chair Zero” has. I’m not sure if it’s lighter than your chair or not, but it’s just as well-made (same brand) and can be found for under $100 if you’re a savvy shopper.

I agree with you with everything but mostly the chair!!! I do bring the extra 1lbs (unless it's a short hike) the joy of knowing you can crash and relax when you'll arrive at your camp is amazing for moral support.

I am exactly the same way when people say to me "You need to..." and it is usually followed by "read this book" or "watch this movie" or "buy/download this CD." For outdoor stuff, nah... I just redefined the statement as " If time permits, I might want to look into..."). Alternately, when I hear "You need to" I generally hear Charlie Brown's parents ... and to the best of my knowledge the patriarch and matriarch of the Brown family don't know f###-all about backpacking. Dan, you rock! Thank you... for all the videos.

I don't use a water filter because I hike in the Scottish highlands, the water is really fast flowing so there's no debris and I just use silver tablets to clear any bacteria from it. water filters aren't a necessity if you have similar water sources

A chair that competes with helinox in almost every way except for the listed weight limit I recommend the sunyear chair on Amazon. There are a lot that look like it and I'm sure they are but I don't use it. I weight 243-248 depending on the time of day, sunyear is rated at 250lbs and I use my chair DAILY have had it for about 4 months now and it hase shown no signs of wear. Best part it's as of now $47 on Amazon.

I had a bear take a swipe at my tent in Northern Michigan, and having Tenacious Tape and my pole splint seriously saved the trip for me! My tent looked super ratchet but it made it through the next two days. And one other pro of Tyvek is that you can use it to make a hitchhiking sign if needed :)

Take the plastic seal out of your squeeze where the water goes into it and put a mesh thing that goes into sinks. It will keep big pieces of stuff out of your filter and it will last way longer.

A chair of similar design and weight can be found on Amazon for about CAD$40. Sometimes a little cheaper. Worth every penny though.

Love the energy. Interesting options as well. Dan, have you done a video on how to filter water using whatever kit that wouldn’t weigh a lot? I’ve seen people use a 2 liter drip system from a platypus bag using a camelback tube into a Sawyer and then into another bag. What’s the easiest, lightest way? If you have t done one you really “nee... should. 👍

I'd just get a Sawyer Squeeze kit. It only weighs a few ounces. And all you do is fill a bag, screw on the filter, then squeeze water from the bag, through the filter, into a water bottle. Afterward you want to backwash it so it doesn't clog, but it doesn't get much more simple and the whole system can fit in a pocket.

I don't filter in general unless I need very clean water for personal use. Where you play makes all the difference.

Nice list but since the chair is expensive I would suggest a camp stool still weighs 1lb and typically cost $20 - $30. I back having an adequate first aid kit for whatever type of adventuring you do. some need less some need more. Good video topic.

FIRST AID KIT: I imagine most of us are building our own, rather than using the full contents of a ready-made kit. In that scenario, I recommend buying a smaller, empty first aid bag via Amazon for a few dollars, then filling it accordingly. That brand with the yellow bags tends to be pretty pricey (the one in the vid is $19) considering you're mostly just paying for a bag into which you will put items you already have.
