A few weeks ago, the forclaz jacket was on sale at my local Decathlon. I remebered your review from last year, so i bought it for 45;- € , wich is about the same in Dollars at the moment. Until now i am very satisfied. Trank you for the hint and keep up your awesome Workshop. Greetings from Germany.

Also worth a serious consideration is the Atom SL. Excellent for shoulder seasons and thin enough to be worn under a down/hard shell in colder weather.

Love the Forclaz Trek 100. I’m not a hiker but I bought one for myself for the cold UK winter, and weeks later went back to Decathlon and got a second one 🤣 Now have one with a hood and one without. I still have a Rab Nebula Pro, which I got in 2020. Albeit that’s still an awesome jacket I’m half tempted to just sell it! After getting the Forclaz one I couldn’t see why I’d need anything else!

Thanks Dan, you inspired me to take action and upgrade from my Uniqlo puffer (cheap, synthetic fill but still quite a capable jacket). I dropped $90 on the Decathlon Forclaz Trek 100, 23°F Real Down Packable Puffer. Some thoughts after a couple days use... 1. it's light and warm, 2. the fit is about right; I'm reliably a men's medium (5'7", 155lb) and while body and arm length are perfect, the girth is on the slim side, 3. the fill is "responsibly sourced" duck down, which I can believe given the country of origin and the prominence of duck on the menus there, 4. there are two zippered outside pockets for your hands and that's it, no inside pockets, 5. the hood is thoughtfully contoured so with the zipper zipped right up, the wind doesn't de-hood you in two seconds, 6. it's packable, but there's no stuff bag included. Like it. Good recommendation thank you.

I was not aware that they even had Decathlon in the US. I bought the jacket he mentioned a while ago and am very satisfied. Here in Europe it costs about €50 I think. It is of course not nearly as warm as a thick down jacket, but for autumn or for use in combo with other layers, as a super light jacket, it is great to stuff into your backpack for long runs in winter, for skiing, for hikes, etc. A great way to stay warm after finishign a long run or ski, after you have sweated and need to not cool down too much. In case no one has already mentioned- the huge hood (on any of these) is of course for the helmet for climbers. Without the oversizing, the hood is useless to those wearing helmets. So it's a good thing.

For most people, the Decathlon is the choice. Money saved can go into other gear that is arguably more important when benefit per dollar is considered. Better pack, better sleep system, better layers, etc. Nice to see some good stuff still coming out of Cumulus, too. The Montbell looks perfect for someone who avoids every form of vegetation on the planet, and goes nowhere near a wood burning fire. Should also avoid wearing it while backpacking. 7D nylon is just asking to be poked and torn on every single sharp object that exists.

Great review Dan. I can only speak from my own experience and the use for me for "small" puffys. I live in Norway and working as an rafting guide and outdoor guide so i say i say the temperatures and weather conditions working is in between very moist to very dry cold +25c til -30c. I can mostly talk about Acteryx since that is my go to. I have the Atom in all the thickness, and shure i use them a lot but my go to will be the Nuclei jacket pretty much all days. Since last year i only find my self use the atom as a mid layer. The Nuclei has outstanding packabillity, weight, drys out faster and feels warmer than the Atom bq of the loft in the fibers. Looking forward to more rew // Best Magnus

@liryco8795
@liryco8795 Жыл бұрын
@@radosawskrzypczak5977 it's very difficult to say, it depends on so many parameters such as when you're using it/for what activities, how you are dressed under... I've used it in summer above 2500m altitude in t-shirt, it's too warm, but I'm not a chilly person. I'd say it's good for mountaineering in mid season, in static position (when belaying or at camp) with a good layer underneath around -5 to 10°C. Above 10 I would find it too much.

I own the Decathalon Trek in both down and synthetic. I took the down version on my AT thru hike and it worked great but I wish I would have had the synthetic one instead. In the Smokies we got hit with a bunch of snow and temps in the 20s. The best way to dry the sweat from your clothes when you stop at the end of the day is to keep them on and put dry layers on outside. I did notice a difference in the insulation properties of the down jacket as my undergarmets started to dry and the vapor passed through the jacket. A synthetic jacket would have solved this issue. They synthetic version is only a couple of ounces heavier and about half of the price. As far as warmth goes, it works as well as the down version. You'd be surprised how many people on the AT had Decathalon gear. It's definately more popular in certain circles.

My 4-season down jacket is the Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) Feather Pack hooded jacket. It’s not ultralight at about 15oz, but with 5oz of 800-fill hydrophobic goose down and costing under $200 it’s hard to beat. Temps in the 30s aren’t uncommon in the summer here and it’s perfect for staying warm before bed or after getting up. I’ve also hiked in it in subzero temps. My winter-only jacket is a Marmot Greenland Baffled Down Jacket, I have no idea of fill weight but I was warm setting off fireworks at -20F with just a light fleece under it.

The Decathlon version you are showing is (in Europe) about 60 euros. There is a 90 euros version that is even warmer. This one (MT100) is for -5C and the other one (MT500) is suitable up to -10C. Decathlon also has some pretty good merino wool base layers that are way cheaper than the brand versions. I have worked at Decathlon for a few months a long time ago, and we were explained that all of the gear is not just tested in a factory, but at the location where it will be used, in factory locations all over France. So the swimwear is made at the location that is near the beach, the ski clothing near the alps, etc.

Favorite as cold belay puffy is the Mammut Meron, such a packable and lightweight but seriously warm 900 fill (used to be 95/5%, doesn’t appear to be anymore) and a durable shell. Under 15oz for the medium.

Have you ever tried La Sportiva apparel? I’ve used their jackets for years (well I worked for them for 4 years) and they are the boooomb… they are developed for skimountaineering. Light and very warm

Found a MH Ghost Whisperer 2 (no hood) at a Columbia outlet for ~$95. Easy to justify when you get that kind of deal 😂

The decathlon costs 49$ (tax included) in Italy and I agree it’s a Best Buy. I have in all versions and nearly all colors and it’s awesome

I bought the Decathlon and Ghost Whisperer 2. No competition between the 2. However, I will say as a 'value' jacket the Decathlon is pretty good.

For real i was window shopping for warm puffers, went to WalMart's site, saw they had one for like 59. Then i checked out youtube and came to Dan's site . . . after the video, I noticed what i saw on WalMart and Dan's vid was THE SAME PUFFER - the Decathlon Forclaz Trek 100. I gotta check it out!

Love my Decathlon jacket. Strong suggestion: go one size up. Wear a large? Get the XL instead.

Just dropped 4 hundo on a down puffer jacket from Feathered Friends a few weeks ago. Never heard of them TBH but the jacket is incredible.

I would have liked to see the Enlightened Equipment Apex jacket on the list. I've had one for a while now. I stopped using almost anything else. It's an awesome jacket

I bought a Zeroxposur puffy jacket last fall from a brand named store. Regular price was $79 or $89, it was on sale plus an extra 15% off in store coupon so my final price was $18. It packs fairly small, breaks the wind and it's warm. What do you think about that?

Great options mentioned. I have the Arc’teryx Cerium LT and the SL, along with a Patagonia Micro Puff. Never hike/backcountry camp without one of them. I’ll pick up one of those Decathlon jackets from each of our teens.

You'll likely decide to give it away to a Salvation Army Thrift Store the day after you get it. Hold it up to a bright sky, you can see right through it.

I checked out the $90 one after the UP Michigan video a couple days ago. I feel like I might be better off buying Marino wool instead. I'm sure I'll end up with all of it eventually.
