What kills me is, we've had funding issues for decades now, with teachers feeling compelled to buy supplies for students out of their own pockets, but this school's district just left hundreds of perfectly good chairs, tons of furniture, and a giant hardwood gym floor to rot rather than selling them off. Bureaucracy at its finest.

That is going on here in Arizona as well. I work for a major Office Supply Store chain. Our company tries to help out Teachers as much as we can. It is unreal that Teachers are buying supplies for their classrooms. So much of what I saw in there could have been re-allocated to other schools in the area. Just a shame.

I'm sure the district could probably be sued for this kind of stuff. Most cities and schools have in their charters or ordinances requirements to liquidate any end of life assets.

So crazy how there are huge vacant buildings like this sitting around that could be utilized as youth centers, or housing for homeless veterans, etc

The issue with this is that resources would need to be allocated toward maintaining these properties, which would obviously be quite expensive. If not properly maintained, whomever owns the property would be liable for any accidents or exposure to harmful substances that may occur inside the property.

Some more details regarding the future of this property: As Dan stated the building itself will be demolished because the city sold off the property to nearby Morgan State University who will demolish the building. MSU plans to build a satellite campus on the property. Some of the public art in this building is going to be saved by Morgan State University and from my understanding is going to be given back to the city. This school is huge, it had a large swimming pool as well that went into disrepair well before the school closure. It also had a large, beautiful auditorium, two gymnasiums and a state championship winning basketball team.

@KunSun Sweeley, it's good to know that something good will be done with it! I hate that the video was cut short, it would've been great to see more of the school and I think Dan was right from the start. As soon as I saw the swaying lamp post, I thought it would've been perfect to explore at night, especially if the power was at least partially on & maybe that swaying lamp post was flickering.

I remember hearing that in the past, there was a lake here at one point ;but it was removed. This school and the park nearby were built on top of the drained lake. I heard that over the years this building was sinking due to issues with moisture underneath. My mom went to this school for 2 years before transferring

YOOOOOOO!!!!!! I used to attend that school when it was two full high schools Heritage High School #425 the one I attended and Doris M. Johnson #426. As well as a small middle school called "REACH! Partnership School" actually reopened in 2004 with those schools, I believe and I attended it from 2008-2011. "Lake Clifton" as a school that used the entire building closed in 2003. AMA!
@Rebelnightwolfe
@Rebelnightwolfe Жыл бұрын
The side of the school Dan explores in the video are in the middle of the building- closer to the Doris M. Johnson side where the main entrance is located. We as students didn't use it at all. We entered at the "wing" doors where the classrooms are located since it would take up to 5 minutes, depending on what floor and wing your class was in to get to. The main entrance is located near the gyms and auditorium. The library which was rebuild before my time attending there was rebuilt after a fire, is located on the other side of the hallway where the two lunchrooms are. Our schools lunchroom schedules were 3 hours apart so that students from each side never saw each other.
@Rebelnightwolfe
@Rebelnightwolfe Жыл бұрын
Each school had four wings and three floors for classes. One floor is a basement level with smaller windows. Each wing was themed in different color motifs, Blue, Yellow, Green and Brown as this was the color used for the lockers in each wing on every floor. At the end of each wing there are staircases. One of which leads to the main entrance driveway where we would take MTA provided buses to get to and from school. Our school mascot was a Dolphin and Panther. I still have my school ID's! The bus lines were: Heritage Highschool - #19 to State Center, #22 to Mondawmin Doris M. Johnson - #8 to Hunt Valley, #22 to Bayview Doris M. Johnson Let out 50 minutes after our school. They also let in an hour later than us. I would walk up to Harford Rd as the buses tended to get crowded fast if you weren't fast out the door. Between each wing was a "common" area where we would all converge to transit to different wings of the school to get to classes. Each commons area had bathrooms in the middle and benches for students to rest on. The school wasn't bad. We only had one incident of a student from the Doris M. Johnson side who was brandishing a knife and we went on lockdown for an hour. The only teacher I remember from those days is Jacqueline McKenna who was my AP-Statistics teacher.

Where I live, it's common to salvage building materials from wrecking ball destined buildings for resale. Gym and bowling alley floors are prized for the hard , durable wood. I hope this place is gutted before demolition. To not repurpose buildings is such a shame and waste.

Just got back from exploring that building. I must say it was a treat. Most places I’ve explored around here in MD have been totally wrecked or just purely taken over by nature. Interestingly there are a few wings of the building that are virtually un touched, only levels of interaction are clearly contractors and or BCPS personnel clearing out rooms of trash and other items for future de construction… obvious scrappers have been all over the building. The structure has suffered from what appears to be two separate fires. Also PAY ATTENTION when near the auditorium, there is strong evidence of current squatter activity. Still plenty of stuff to see in there, I suppose it’ll slowly be gutted before demo but honestly I believe that building had tons of potential left in it. It is pretty amazing how some areas of the school are pretty far beaten up while others are virtually un touched ..access to the building is easy, of course do the right thing, don’t tear stuff up. And also as mentioned above beware of potential squatters Also there is a wing to the east of the building look on the map and it’s dead north of the old tennis courts BEWARE there is some kind of natural gas leak, strong Odor of gas on the 1st/2nd floors.

I took home economics in Jr. High, 7th grade, not in high school itself, and that would have been 2003-2004 when I was in 7th grade the same year this school closed. I am in Spokane,Washington where in the main district here when I went only did 7th and 8th Jr. High, but about 5 years ago or something they changed it so 6th graders go to it too now which is the way it was when my mom went, hers was the last class that went into Jr. High for 6th then for like 40 some odd years including when I went it was K-6 Elementary school and 7-8 Junior High, now its back to 6-8 Junior High. I remember there were 2 teachers who taught it at that school and I was lucky and got the woman who didn't make you carry a flour baby around to demonstrate what being a parent was like but the other teacher did and I felt so lucky and hated the idea of having to do that. And I remember in high school seeing kids carrying them around at certain points too, so I would imagine Home EC was also a 9th grade thing you could take at high school if it wasn't something you got credit for in 7th or 8th. I was in high school from 2005-2009. Anyways you mentioning the schools history of producing NBA level talent is sort of sad in reflection when you go into the gym and see what the court looks like and all the colors and the name of the team and you think thats where those people honed those skills and practiced them and discovered their talents. One of the buildings at my high school was torn down shortly after I graduated that I had classes in, but they expanded and remodeled the main building and made a larger parking lot where the other building was, and I hated math and thats what most of the classes I took were when I went into the outlying building. So I don't miss it so much, lol. It was a cool tan brick building that had been another small school at one point before the high school was built next to it, then when the high school was built the other school built a new one at another location and the high school started using it. I know one of the things in it was driving class when my brother who is 7 years older went there, but when I went driving class wasn't around anymore the state got rid of driving class in public schools between when he went and I went.

Its mind blowing how a school district can just close a perfectly good school, and even if it does need some repairs due to age or whatever, just fix it! They just sell it and these schools just rot away. Plus, if they do close a school, why not help out the taxpayers by selling off the equipment and furniture inside if they are not going to use it anymore. Its just crazy.
