Thank you for your question! Here are a few things that might help: 1. Wearing heels changes your weight distribution - depending on the type of heels you wear they might push you farther forward. If you feel like you're falling backwards when you dance, it might be that your body isn't aligned over the balls of your feet. Try bending your knees slightly and do some balance exercises in heels to get a better sense of alignment. 2. The height and type of heels you wear can also affect your balance. Ideally, look for a dance store that offers shoe fittings, and bring your shoes with you; they can help make sure your dance shoes are working with you, not against you. 3. Dancing in heels is definitely taxing on your foot and leg muscles; it takes strong arches and calves as well as stable ankles. If you find that you feel pretty balanced when you dance in flats, but off balance when you're in heels, try to see where in your body that loss of balance comes from (are your ankles wobbling? is it hard to lift your heels off the floor? do you tend to put more weight on the inside or outside edge of your foot?) and then look for exercises to address those issues. Heels between 2in and 3in are what most dancers tend to wear, with anything over 3in being on the high side. 2.5in is the most common heel height, as far as we've seen. That being said, it all comes down to personal preference, and we recommend going by what feels comfortable rather than by the numbers. Someone who's used to wearing heels day-to-day might find a 2in heel too low, while someone who never wears heels might find it too high. There are also other factors that determine the height of heel you'll find comfortable, including the size and shape of your feet, the strength of your arches, ankles and calves, and the placement of the heel on the shoe - it's entirely possible that two pairs of shoes with the same heel height will look or feel higher or lower depending on how the shoes are constructed and how they fit your foot. We could make a whole other video on this topic, but the main point is that heels are fun, but by no means mandatory, and feeling good in your shoes means way more than the heel height written on the side of the shoe box ;) - Ana

Some brands offer wide-width shoes, so if those are an option for you then any style should work in a wide width. For brands that don't offer different widths, I'd recommend going with open-toed shoes as they will more readily conform to your foot shape. Some styles have straps with buckles across the toe area, which allow you to adjust their width. And there are brands that offer lace-up heels that are great for getting an exact fit for your foot.
