Interesting... those "habits" look exactly like one of the dancers So MANY, love ( Jade )... I personally cringe, every time I see those kinds of "habits"... too much movement/energy, when in fact, it's not needed.... draining.

I think that by “class dancer” she means “LA class dancer” and habits she sees in dancers that train at the big studios there. That’s just my guess though.

This is ridiculous. It would have been more realistic to say you don't like dancers who can't take direction or don't pay attention to the instruction or intended style and detail of the choreography. To associate these habits with taking class or taking the same class over and over is a little insulting to the students and practitioners that are taking the class.

That's such an interesting perspective! I would argue that the habits you mentioned ("can't take direction, don't pay attention to the instruction") are a direct result of the classes they're taking and the instructors instructing them. Where else would these habits be built? Instead of laying the blame on the dancer (which is what I would be doing if I said "I don't like dancers who can't take direction"), I'm laying the blame on the atmosphere they're in that is laying that foundation. To me, that is not insulting at all- it is arguing that a dancer is a product of their training environment instead of a dancer just being someone who "can't take direction" on the whole. The dancers I'm talking about are taking class after class where these habits are being engrained in them, and it's not their fault. Love the argument though!

@GalenHooks but everyone trains and everyone is a product of training and class. You, yourself dance in a way that is particular to you and you are a product of your own environment, intricacies of your own dance style are specific to your background and training. Taking direction is a skill that every performer needs and should work on. You can't blame taking class as the reason for people not following your choreography in the way that you specify. Dancers are grown up enough to differentiate the two situations and if they can't then that's a skill they need to work on.

@@fionatolland1840 Yes you're exactly right! It's a skill they need to work on. We agree on that, we just disagree on how to communicate where the problem comes from. I'm able to take direction because the environment I'm a product of required that of me. Other dancers don't have environments that are fostering that skill. Appreciate the discourse!
