When I was in college, my music history teacher was a great devotee of the Renaissance and not only taught me to play recorder (properly, mind you, not like many of us learned, and as an elementary music teacher, I taught, in grade school) but also formed a Renaissance consort, of which I was a proud member. It is my understanding that this ensemble waned and disappeared once he retired, but I have to say it was one of the better experiences of my college years. We even got to dress in costume! I only regret that I did not learn to play other instruments, although I was able to try out the krummhorn once or twice. This brings back a few pleasant memories!

I didn’t think I would like this style of music. But now that I have listened to some of this, I have most certainly taken a liking to this style of music. The thing which I like the most about it is how light and subtle it is. For music to (for lack of a better term) 'synchronize' most efficiently with myself, it cannot be too overwhelming, or else my innate ability to experience and (most importantly) perceive stimuli is interrupted and reduced. In other words, I find it easier to 'vibe' when I listen to this music. I believe this music does what some people refer to as 'resonate with the Soul'. Unfortunately, a lot of modern music does not provoke this same feeling within me. "That's some kind of something."

This music is simple and surprisingly uplifting, given how dark the overall Renaissance period was (endless wars, plagues, Reformation, inquisition etc). I guess people did not need much to enjoy brief moments of happiness in their otherwise very tough life...No artificial complexity and decadence that came later with the Baroque period (which also had its numerous and undisputed masterpieces).
@markmacho3322

The Renaissance was also a period of joy and hope. No one then was looking at themselves from the perspective of the 21st c. Just as you cannot look at your life from the perspective of 600 years in the future!

these are antique instruments, precursors of various modern instruments like the clarinet and oboe.
@ktdmbarocche

Ancestors of oboe and clarinet are the chalumeau, as well as crumhorn, shawn and Rauschpfeife. Then, there is sackbut, a precursor of trombone (Posaune in German). Dulcian and Rankett (also known as sausage bassoon, a pocket form double reed instrument which popular in the late 16th century, until the end of the 17th century) will descend as a low in pitch as a modern bassoon.

Remarkable how the cultural entities that have given the world the best music ever, the Italian and the German-speaking ones, often have the sound of their languages opposed (in the film Amadeus, a character tells the Emperor that German for Mozart’s libretto is “troppo brutta”! - “too ugly”). In addition to that being a totally subjective opinion, it is clear that the sound of a language does not influence the musical genius of its people! And the three often considered the all-time greatest (B, M, B) were in fact German speakers. And to my ears “die Vögel singen, die Glocken klingen” sounds both beautiful and musical (even though I’m not German)! - from Perth, Australia.
