Hi Brian, great job, but please could you tell me your storch flying weight? i think it´s a little heavy due to all the scale parts, i got the balsa kit so i started from the beginning and at this moment my storch is around 1kg only with the engine 25osmax but i want to be under 1.5kg when add the radio system and the monokote cover, thanks in advance

I can’t believe how much work you put in those videos, and the love for RC that shines through the screen. You are one of the few trusty reviewer. It’s good to know the drawbacks of a plane, because some drawbacks are acceptable if we really like a model. Especially if it’s not so common like this one.

I'm very glad to hear you say this. We try not to glaze over these sometimes glaring issues, but want to acknowledge our own limitations up against a very good model, otherwise. I think this plane could be so much more, but it really needs an EXPERT ARF builder.

"Thanks for your service. Maybe." Lol. Reminds me of when I was a kid and went to check out the civil air patrol. I'd just gotten a ww2 computer game as a first intro to flight simulators and the other kids asked what planes I liked and not knowing much but the fun I'd had in the computer game I said the Mustang and the 109. They all stop and stare at me and one says "that's a Nazi plane..." and I knew I would not be welcome. I guess these days it would be the other way around.... But maybe this summer I might enroll in ground school and finally learn to fly. Until then then, what I've gotten from rc planes with your help is already terrific.

I want to love this plane. The Storch is one of the O.G.'s of STOL, I look at it and feel like it should be able to fly at a walking pace. Honestly, I'd like it more if it was a little less scale in appearance with a broader wing and flew a little floatier. Very good video!

It’s wing wash coming off the trailing edge and creating a pocket of air that the elevator and horizontal stabilizer come in to contact with so basically it’s creating turbulence for your elevator. Something like that on a STOL wing will happen it’s different than a regular wing and it generally happens on high speed or after a dive if you start to turn. Or you are in a turn and you start to increase your speed.
@BrianPhillipsRC

Could be. This plane is heavy, and high wing loading for a purported STOL aircraft, but admittedly, my control surfaces are less than perfect, but I tried my best to get them as exact as possible.

Brian, as you mentioned the motor and prop are similar to the Turbo Timber. In reality this plane was an absolute slow flyer (maximum speed: 100mph). It was designed for extreme short landings : 60 feet runway sufficient. It did several rescue missions in the mountains, where no other plane could land. On the other hand it was used for reconnaissance. This rc plane should be modified with a small light weight motor and prop. Compared to the original, the flying weight should not be over 1.4 kg (with lipo included).

FYI, The Storch had leading edge "slots" ( non-retractable) to help preserve lift in slow flight at extreme nose up attitudes. Some similar US STOL aircraft used leading edge "slots" that retracted automatically, via bungee cords, at higher airspeeds, they allowed for higher airspeeds in normal flight when retracted. Stinson L-1 and L5 aircraft were US answers to the Storch.

Hi Brian! Enjoyed the video. Your wife makes you look good. Wanted to discuss your slats. The slats move way too much for that wing. You should check out Mike Patey's channel when he talks about designing Scrappy's wing and slats. Your take off setting should be the max setting for the slats. Where you have them, you are not helping the wing lift. The key is to control the airflow over the top of the wing. Also, the slats will shift the center of lift aft and the flaps move it forward (That is why the nose lifts when the flaps deploy). Ideally the slats/flaps should offset and provide more lift at low speeds, but you will still need power to overcome the increased drag. I hope to see a second thoughts video soon with adjustments.... Happy flying!
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 жыл бұрын
I also think the very minor indisparity between the left and right slats, doesn't help. Any symmetry I achieved was very hard fought, in deed, but much more pain and suffering would be necessary for 100% operation. I was bummed that they didn't seem to do anything, but agree it's possible my deployment was somewhere between WAY too much and too much.

Hi Brian, a club-mate has redesigned the leading edge slat on his dancing wings storch to a correct NACA slat airfoil design removing the flat surface on top of the slat. He expects the air will transtion from the slat to the main wing without turbulance at low flying speeds and hopefully resolve the stall issues with the main wing. I will soon maiden the plane for him, once we get a calm day, and will report in RC groups how it went.

One thing conspicuously absent from all flights I've seen of this DW Storch is STOL - no small thing to be missing, particularly with all the wing devices it should get off the ground in less than it's own length and land like a kite, but it actually looks as if it flies with the wing loading of a nitro high wing trainer. Lots of authority no doubt but it doesn't seem floaty or STOL, those slats should be fixed and where they sit on the leading edge is critical, after that point they just become air brakes

Looks are good, but flight performance was lack-luster :( It could be made to fly good with some more TLC, I believe. My screws holding the nose section (motor box) had protruded into the cavity, stopping insertion of a lighter 2200mAh 4S pack, which would have helped a lot, without giving up the CG. This might be worth trying, if you get it.

The real Storch uses flaperons, just saw that on Kermit Weeks, Fantasy of Flight video. Might help make slow landings. The FoF videos are very detailed on features of the Storch including a demo of wing folding procedure and how the leading edge slats work at extreme nose up attitudes to keep wing lifting and not stalling. Maybe using aileron rudder mix (or manual rudder mix) would control adverse yaw

How to make it fly better: If you are using Y-cable on ailerons , try differential ailerons, lots of up, little down. Angle ailerons upward a little to mimic wingtip washout. The extreme high aspect skinny wing is inherently yaw unstable. Check CG, maybe add some nose ballast or reposition battery pack or use heavier pack. Try taping wing slots shut. The full scale Storch was an STOL that specialized in extremely slow flight and short landings. It the DW Storch model is too heavy it may not be a floater. Also check for any warps or misalignment of wing panels by sighting carefully from the rear. Hope this helps. BTW, some of the Dynam designs fly very well, examples PT-17, WACO.

Good pointers on the possible improvements on this model. Sig used to print something like this in their manuals - "some experience required for optimal performance" (or some such thing) and this would be very true on this model, and many ARF's...so hopefully through our build video, these more experienced builders can come up with a good measure of quality on this model, despite my concerns. yes, agreed about the Dynam PT-17 and WACO - these were good ones!

I also have the DW Storch and think that it flies less than good. I'm a warbirder and especially love Luftwaffe warbirds. I've been disappointed with my Storch from the beginning. All of those cool features seem to make the plane fly like crap. I disabled the LE slats before the maiden flight, as I could tell that they weren't going to work well. The folding wings are a nice scale feature, but what that feature really does is allow the wings to separate from the fuselage at the root. Terrible! I tried to use the wing struts to put the wings in compression at the root, but what actually happened is that I put a bending moment at the wing root, which caused the wings to go anhedral (as you noticed on one of your flights). I've also had tip-stall problems. No warning of an impending stall. You get slow, and bam! it drops a wing tip and cartwheels. For a STOL plane, it really sucks at slow speed. I have since used wood screws to semi-permanently attach the wing to the fuselage. I've gotten my Storch to fly better, but I've gotta be on my A Game for every landing, and I never really know what to expect. FWIW, I'm flying mine on an OTX radio with an FrSky X8R 8-channel (plus 4-channel XBUS expansion). No stabilization. I'm not at all opposed to stabilization; I just haven't noticed it needing stabilization. It wasn't an expensive plane, and it does look nice and is a good conversation piece. I don't plan to sell or trade mine, but I wouldn't buy another one and I wouldn't have bought it in the first place, if I knew then what I know now. So, overall, I'm a good bit left of neutral on the DW Fieseler Storch and wouldn't recommend it to anyone, other than to someone whose world will come crashing down if they didn't have a Storch of their own to fly.
@BrianPhillipsRC

You explained my experience almost EXACTLY. Glad it wasn't just me!!! I sometimes feel a bit "inferior" of a builder of ARF's but then I'm like...wait a minute...I'm not THAT BAD (...am I???) As for the build quality & strength - it's not terrible, but I want it to fly as good or better than it looks, but like you said, it does fly, and I think the folding wings would still be good with a removable bolt (right???) Anyway, thanks Chuck! P.S. I can't believe you fly her without stabilization! She bites EVEN WITH STAB!
@velikijoxotnik
@velikijoxotnik 2 жыл бұрын
I doubt that I'd fly her on a windy day. On an pretty calm day, she's pretty stable in the air. It's really just the landing that I have problems. She doesn't like slow flight. I didn't notice any of the signs of tail-heaviness that you'd mentioned. I can't get the larger batteries, like you used, into the battery bay; I think that a 4S-2700mah, moderately low C rating, was as big as I could get into the battery bay.

No, not the Draco - that would be a really bad choice, and way too expensive and hard to fix...GREAT PLANE, but terrible choice for a beginner...and honestly, dangerous. It's way too much plane for even a "natural". There are aspects of the Draco that could be doable for a NEW pilot...you know, like a person who's been flying with SAFE only for a few months, and in the right environment, you could pull it off, but I wouldn't recommend it. The Timber Evo 1.5m is a much better, "Grow into it" kinda plane, but even it, is somewhat "dangerous" for a total new pilot, in my personal experience. Again, second plane, no doubt - with loads of practice on the FIRST, you could totally move into a Timber Evo 1.5m. There are a ton of great choices, and FYI, flying fixed wing and flying heli's are very similar, so when you get one, you kinda get a great start on the other too! Same with Quads (drones) and other aircraft. When I fly a new plane I get it trimmed out and then so altitude and see how slow it will fly into a stall. So then I do not get any slower than that close to the ground Seems like the wings are too long.

LOL - "...because I'm an idiot...." - sounds like something I would say!!! As for being safe, and doing 3D...wear a helmet ;) Practice on a simulator if you CAN, and I don't suggest Flapperons. They will tend to make you balloon in a bad attitude for harrier, in my opinion. As for setting up and using flapperons, you would want to do an ELEVATOR to FLAP mix, and you don't need it. The 3D planes are already tooooooooooooo dang pitch sensitive in my experience. My advice...make a NO Expo or -10% Expo on all three control axis and flip to that mode, using it exclusively in 3D flying, then get back to an ORDINARY EXPO level when you're ready to just sport fly again... This will give you more authority QUICKER, and less complex...plus you don't give up AS3X and SAFE.

The slats are acting like spoilers when you select landing flaps bringing on the undesirable flight characteristics. Personally, if the slats are on a seperate servo to the flaps, then I would place the slats into the fully retracted position and unplug the slat servos. Then try landing flaps and see how you get on.
@BrianPhillipsRC

They're on a separate channel, so I could just shut off the MIX. Good idea. The Flaps on this plane are small. I was surprized and very disappointed in the slow flight characteristics of this plane. It seems to crash right through ground effect too! Bad place to have an unexpected stall - LOL ;) I do agree the SLATS are creating some asymmetry, especially with less than perfect, uneven deployment.

Hi Brian, I love your videos . I just used your link to order a Timber Evo. I know that you have said you love the new T-28 only thing you would have liked is having it with lights. Pilot Robert said the same thing! You are suck a professional in doing mods I wonder if you could consider doing a light install on THAT model? I know that I and Many, Many other pilots would love to see that. My best to you and the family. Bob

@gmorphan 2 жыл бұрын
The TT Evo is a really good plane, flies well and is relatively forgiving. I would recommend not installing the leading edge slats until you're sure you want them. I actually removed mine because the plane has so much lift and float even without them. Also, the plane is easier to pick-up and handle with the slats off. I have the yellow 1.1m T-28 and love it as a basic flier, I'm sure the 1.2 T-28 w/retracts is very good too. But honestly my newest favorite flier is the 1.1 RV-7, it's really a multi-dimensional plane depending on 3S or 4S and how you want to fly.

We did this a ton back in the infancy of our channel, but we've found that we don't have time to modify the planes like I used too. The T-28 is excellent, and if you want to made that mod, you could follow along one of my many earlier mod video - like the Spitfire 1.2m (playlists is available for you)

at 32:00 I think what you're having a possible issue with isn't the leading edge slats, but possibly the aileron and flap hinges. I think you may have gapped them from the wings too much and that could be causing the occasional wonkiness you're experiencing in the air. anyway, I thought about getting this plane too, but seems like you're not giving a ringing endorsement, so will pass. love your videos!

Brian loved this video , i have the VQS Pulatis PC-6 , 46 size EP & GP in the Swiss Colour Scheme do you think you could recommend me an electric motor and esc for it as i know you know your stuff , cheers buddy and Big Cherrio from Australia :-)
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 жыл бұрын
To be honest, when I want to size a motor, I look at a similar ARF, PNP, or BNF, and see what they used, then find something similar. I don't really do the math, as I find it's pretty much worthless, and super subjective anyway, so I've found best thing to do it get in the range, and if shipping is expensive, get TWO sizes...then you can go up and down. Also, you have to work out the prop size and pitch...that's another tough thing, but it often times makes more sense to START THERE first...then size the motor and esc back. What does your MFG suggest for prop size and pitch? Then go back into the motor, then back into the ESC/Battery.

I would try this on 3s. It seems like its going too fast all the time and not scale. What are you going to shoot with the gun going that fast?
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 жыл бұрын
I wasn't concerned with the look, but concerned with keeping it airborne. I also think the prop pitch was a bad match...needs LESS pitch. Also, one thing I learned later, was that I couldn't get the 2200mAh all the way up behind the motor due to my screw placement...thus I needed a bigger pack to sort out the CG. Getting a smaller pack, further forward, would have helped tremendously...as would a less steep prop pitch.

I think you would really have to be a fan of the full sized plane to accept the compromise in this models less than forgiving flight characteristics.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 жыл бұрын
I am a fan of the full scale plane, and this one too. It's a beauty, but I just think the difference between my outcome and the outcome of an extremely skilled ARF builder would be the difference between a good flying plane and what we had...which is unfortunate, given the fact that I'm not a terrible builder either...it's pretty evident where I struggle, but I don't fancy myself a complete RC slouch either. I fear a bad builder would have a VERY bad experience with this plane, and a great builder will still have trouble making it fly much better than what we experienced. I think there's too many parts that are too hard to control to make it go together as good as it needs to go together for the best outcome. Not sure if this rings true for you, but I wasn't impressed with the build, and was even less impressed with the fly-ability. BUT you have to look at my review through the sphere of me wanting NOT to spend 20+ hours on a build, and the fact that we're having to film it all...this plays a part, and hope you get this.

Hello, I like watching your channel. But your flying terrain is riddled with obstacles. From the video it's hard to tell the exact distance of the obstacles, but sometimes I think it was close. The power lines would probably bother me the most. But you're doing pretty well with it!

Armin - yes, the power lines are a bit of a challenge - I've flown between and through them, around them many times, and into them. I actually kinda enjoy that aspect, but we're in the process of negotiating with the power company to have them all buried...it's going to be pretty pricey, so not super excited about that, but for my PPG (Powered Paragliding) I want the higher safety margins...RC is not as critical, but when it's me flying next to the lines, I don't want them there at all ;) As for close quarters flying, this has always been part of my experience. I like it that way. ;)
