The first form and associated 2 person drills of the chang/miao dao form known as Mei Hua (plumb blossom - ie. 5 "petal" form) as practised in the Academy of Traditional Fighting Arts (see www.tfaperth.com).

As a long time martial artist (13 years, Hung Gar) I love it when I actually find the rare video explaining application. And I've recently fallen in love with the miao dao, so I'm favoriting this video. BTW, despite what Hollywood would have you believe, real men don't shave their chests!

Impressive video I really enjoyed a more informative look at some practical Chinese sword fighting techniques. Usually what I find is to flowery to be useful but these techniques.

Interesting form. I noticed you're fighting very close in. Is this specific to the miao dao or due to the fact that you're using bokken? I would expect a two handed sword form to have more spacing.

The range is due to bokken.

I saw a walking stick in your basket. Do you have a form for it? As an everyday item this makes a fascinating weapon.

Wonderful video. Can I ask what is the origin of the Plumb Blossom form? Thank you.

It isn't a form so much as two 2-person drills joined together. The drills based on sword techniques from my two main teachers - ie. the techniques that I personally found most practical and useful in sparring over the years. I have packaged the drills into a single solo "form" so that they can be more easily remembered (and practised without a partner, where necessary). The name simply reflects the fact that they have 5 techniques that "cycle" (the plum blossom has 5 petals).

Loved it Dan. Yr move very sexy with a sword. Definitely somebody not to mess with. Yr a Yang Stylist? but you seem to have a wide range of skills. Would love to train with you.

+Willem Els Well you know Willem, everything I do is just filmed during ordinary class. The main thing is that the technique is visible, and I believe it is (or I wouldn't have put the video up).

I have a few issues but namely that I don't believe you can consistently avoid a full speed blade traveling towards you from close range by just trying to step out of the way...especially without attempt to displace the blade/duck away from it. I've seen a lot of Chinese and japanese fencing demonstrations but have never seen the same practitioners consistently demonstrate this stepping out of the way in actual sparring...more often than not one of the combatants just changes the directory of the sword to land a very awkward hit on the other combatant who is now ducking because he realizes he's going to get hit. I'm just not sure it's at all viable, especially without an accompanying deflection. I also fail to see the point as it must assume the opponent does not adjust trajectory or readjust to face you in your new position (assuming you did step out of the way.) I honestly just don't understand it.

7dayspking I do not understand where you see me "avoiding a full speed blade travelling towards me without deflecting it". Indeed, I would agree that avoiding a blade with body movement isn't feasible at all.

Dan Djurdjevic Fair enough, I've seen it taught in many demonstrations of Japanese and especially Chinese martial arts. If that's not what you're doing at 3:30 , at 2:55 maybe you'll appreciate/have a bit of fun with some videos in which people legitimately are teaching this. My other issues are of course that in this exercise the loser is always struck because they stopped tracking your position/remained stationary but this is just a demonstration. Perhaps my final issue is just an issue that will always persist with weapons shorter weapons like swords that don't have a larger guard and that is in most examples where you exploit the other combatant's opening...you leave almost your entire body exposed to an attack at the same time. You see this more in sparring than I'd imagine in real combat (that guy who will intentionally just whack you and ignore defending themselves when they realize they've made a mistake...or worse the guy who will ignore defending themselves and just whack you every time you attack.) I'd love to see if you have any binding exercises. Thanks for the response btw.
