Needed to replace a few radiator thermostats, so why not go with something electronic and slightly smart. I decided on the Danfoss Eco 2 - an electronic thermostat with Bluetooth capabilities, App controlled, but not entirely smart home enabled, but not far off either, and much cheaper than it's big brother the Danfoss Ally. In fact the protocol these Ecos uses have been decoded, and the source code for an example project communicating with them is available here: github.com/dsltip/Danfoss-BLE - so making the controllable by an ESP32 or Raspberry Pi for home automation doesn't seem that difficult.

So I've actually already found a more complete project than I discuss in the video here: github.com/olefriis/Eco2 - and I have been running a Bluetooth scan with an ESP32, and it does detect all the thermostats, so I guess I just have to get coding!

Great video! You mention (at around 10:30) that it is possible to copy settings from one thermostat to the others, or that's at least how I understood it. How do you do that?
@ZnakeTech
@ZnakeTech Жыл бұрын
When you are setting them up, and have set up the settings for one thermostat, and switch between them in the app, it will prompt you if you want to copy the changes to the other thermostat you just connected to...usually, I have found that it doesn't always do that, and I don't really know why. Honestly after living with these for 1½ years, I'm not terrible impressed - sure, they worked and still do, but the app isn't exactly brilliant, the "smart" calibration process takes weeks before you really get consistent heat, so wasn't great that I decided to install them in January, if you use rechargeable batteries the low battery warning is basically always on even with a fully charged set that I know will run it for 6 months, etc.

Hejsa.
@ZnakeTech
@ZnakeTech 2 жыл бұрын

Informative video. I currently have a similar valve made by Honeywell and they are very noisy in operation. Is the Danfoss noisy? By noisy I mean that if it is installed in the bedroom its operation will wake you up.

They are not totally silent, there is a slight noise from the motor when they adjusts themselves, but I rarely notice them. I guess it depends how sensitive you are to noise, I have one right next to my bed, like 50 centimeters from my head when I sleep and it doesn't wake me up.

Can we access the thermostat from internet (outside the house)
@ZnakeTech
@ZnakeTech 2 жыл бұрын
No, it's BlueTooth only through their app, which means you need to be within BT range with your phone, you need to move up to their more expensive offerings with a gateway(Danfoss Ally I think it's called) to gain that sort of functionality.

@ZnakeTech
@ZnakeTech 2 жыл бұрын

How good is it, as a thermostat? How reliable is it?
@ZnakeTech
@ZnakeTech 3 жыл бұрын
It's fine, but definitely not perfect. It does the basic stuff, such as control the temperature on a schedule and automatically stops heating for 15 minutes I think it is when you open the windows. But it also have some issues, such as if you use rechargeable batteries it will turn on the low battery warning within a month or two, even though it will happily continue to function for months after that, and it's "adaptive heating" feature isn't great, it takes a while to kick in, and if the outside temperature fluctuates too much from day to day, it has trouble keeping up. I'm planning to do a follow up review video, but I have little project in mind I want to get done first, and I probably won't have time till my summer vacation.

@@vBDKv Yes, I do realize why it's happening, but like you said, it's annoying. And if you just want to keep the room at a constant temperature 24/7, I would say there isn't much point in any sort of smart thermostat, their main strength in general is the ability to run schedules, in some cases automatically detect if you are not at home if connected to a smart home system, auto shutoff of heat when you open a window to air out, etc.
