If you have a situation where you increase the throttle on your outboard and the boat doesn't go much faster, chances are the rubber bushing in the propeller has failed. When an outboard motor has a spun hub in the propeller it can feel like you are driving a car that has a slipping clutch, and in many ways it is a similar problem. This video looks at the symptoms of this and a couple of ways to fix it, with the best really being to just put a new propeller on. Easy!

My friend I want to say thank you for this video. I have a 120hp Johnson. I bought a prop from eBay for it over the winter, (as mine was kinda beat up). My first ride was great, second ride it started revving and slowing down. I though my gears were going. Your video saved me ALOT of work!! I put the old prop back on and it ran like a champ. Thank you for this invaluable info! Be well, and happy boating. John- from North Dakota.

My husband is having this exact same problem . He hit a unseen stump leaving the boat launch, at a very low speed. We thought that he was going to have to get into the gearbox and change out expensive parts. I am so thankful that you share expertise with us. I checked my prop and sure enough the thrust bushing is worn out. The rubber is gone. Thank you so much for the info and for saving me hundreds if not thousands of dollars. I am not in the habit of commenting any videos but I had to make an exception here- this video solved my problem 100%. I was out on a Lake in Finland when my prop ever so slightly scraped some rock- nothing major, didn't think much of it. But then I had exactly the problem with high revs and going nowhere afterwards.I was afraid that the gear box was damaged but simply changing the prop as Stu suggested did the trick. I also changed to a larger pitch and suddenly my boat moves easier with high load- I just love these videos and the fact that Stu helped me from the other side of the planet. Keep up the great work! Cheers, Kristian from Finland.

In my old johnson 4CV 2T (1994) it was not the prop. I serviced it, then it began to rev up and getting speed slowly, but full speed. It has a spring onto the prop shaft, to engage or disengage forward gear. This spring needs to be totally down the shaft, otherwise it loses grip and the prop revs up slowly. I did not mount it properly. Everything else was fine, I thought I destroyed the gears but fortunately everything was perfect. 4cv johnson 2t gearbox is very simple and sturdy, I think only lack of oil can destroy it. Big thanks to Dangar, this site is amazing, I learned tons of stuff. I am an amateur fisherman hanging aroun tyreenian sea in italy, calabria

Picked up a boat this past week , finally got out today with it . Brought the wife and kids , we were all excited .. planned on fishing and going waterskiing for the first time in about 15 years. Started up fine , got out of the no wake zone and hammered it down thinking I'd impress the kids..well , that didn't happen .Instead all it did was rev up really high. We were all happy to just be out on the lake so we just cruised around slow and just went swimming..I had an extra prop with me but no tools..Oh well at least I know what the problem is..

Thank you, I just took my used boat out for the first time today . It was my very first time out and after about 15 minutes this happened to me I lost acceleration and it would only go forward slowly. I was scared it was a serious issue. I'm going to take the prop off and see if that was the problem.

+Dangar Marine Thanks for the feedback. It idles a little bit low but not too bad. When I got back to the boat ramp (thanks to a lovely couple who gave us a tow) I was flushing the motor and it went into gear fine without stalling. I have since tried putting it in gear and turning the prop by hand and it spins clockwise with a slight clicking sound every half rotation. It doesn't spin anti clockwise when in gear or either direction when it's in reverse. When in neutral it spins and feels smooth. I took the lower unit off recently so maybe I haven't connected it up properly. It's an old Suzuki dt85 1982 model and they can be tricky to get back together.

+Greg Hi Greg, the clicking is normal. Have you made any progress with it?

Thanks a lot for this. My boat lost traction at a time when I really needed it and it was a scary moment, made worse by not knowing what had caused the issue. Pity there is nothing about this in the troubleshooting section of the manual (Suzuki DF5).

I have been fishing for years, but none of my buddies with years of boat experience as well knew what the problem was. so easy but the bushing is so critical - who knew.

I was out for a first test of a newly rebuilt 1968 evinrude 9.5hp yesterday and it spun the hub, it failed after I put into reverse. I had a spare so no big deal, but I thought about this video and it was a quick diagnosis. Its a good runner after a bit of work and very few dollars. I got 3 and half 9.5hp for $150 so I'll have spare parts for a life time.

When I was out the other day, I had these exact symptoms. Boat would move at low RPM but as soon as I would give it throttle, it would over-rev and we wouldn't move. This is the first thing I thought of. Thankfully I remembered your very first advice here to check for a prop or lower unit obstruction. That was it! Big old mass of lake weed on the front of the skeg. Put it in reverse and backed out of it. Problem solved. :P

@@DangarMarine me too! Although I am going to try a different prop. Based on the prop selector from Solas, my 13.75in x 15 pitch is well under pitched. Does make sense as the guy who had the outboard before me used it on a pontoon. Going to try the recommended 13x19 and see what we get.
