Which safety issue did I dismiss for too long? The use of wire bristle brushes to maintain the cooking grates on my smokers and grills. But there is an alternative.

I cook a lot for the church that I attend.... at Easter time alone I had cooked and sold several Boston Butts to help raise money for the church.... And, I kid you not.... My Pastor who I see, as being very much OCD.... had just recently had seen somewhere where someone had gotten a bristle enlodged in their throat .... He asked me if I had heard anything of it.... I think that I was kinda like you were.... until now, watching your video.... I went outside and looked at my wire brush .... although it's different from the one that you were referring to.... it has short bristles on it.... I will be changing up too now.... and Thanks for the heads up.... I couldn't stand something like that to happen to someone who would eat from My BBQ.... Thanks again My Friend.... ♨️👍😎♨️

One time last year I removed my grill grates to clean my grill and in the lip around the firebox that holds the grates I found multiple wire bristles in the grease. I immediately threw my wire brush in the bin and ordered one of these coiled brushes. I also now have a wooden scraper which is more gentle on my porcelain cast iron, but definitely doesn’t clean as well as the coiled brush.

The brass brushes never looked "right" to me, so 30 years ago I began using a paint scraper, and I'm still using the same one. If one of those bristles come out, you're going to see it. And the scraper on the end works well on the sides of individual grates, too.

It happened to my son a couple years ago and I was the one who cleaned my grill with the wire brush!!! Thankfully the wire only stuck him in the roof of his mouth. I’ll never use one of those wire brushes again!!!

I have been aware of this, so I used wadded up aluminum foil. Then I read a few articles about the hazards of cooking in aluminum cook ware. Since some grates are cast iron, foil can be rubbed off by those grates, and get in the food, so Im going to try this type of wire brush. I am glad to learn about it. Thanks Ry.

Nylon bristle brushes work just fine. I've been using them since I bought a lodge sportsman cast iron grill. I didn't want my wire brush to scratch the cast iron grates, and they actually work well.

I just gave up wire bristles last Saturday. Had no less than half a dozen bristles fall out while pre cleaning my new offset before my last video. Luckily, I had a piece of tin foil below the grate I was cleaning and the bristles showed up there. I was mortified. Took great care cleaning the grates and was still super paranoid eating those wings later that day. I need a solution for expanded metal grates and am still thinking on what will be best to use. I may make a video on this problem for other guys like me who have expanded metal. That zig zag is really hard on bristles. Thanks for making this video!

So I also heard about the bristles coming off but thank God I never experienced it first-hand. I never clean my grill grate before a cook I'll clean either right when I'm done cooking or the next day and then use a leaf blower to blow off any bristles that might have come off. It's also a great way to remove any leftover Ash in your pit. Great video, great advice RY

I worked professionally in a kitchen for 15 years. This has been a long standing problem. Especially in commercial kitchens. You would get a wire brush and use it to clean the grill, and you can watch the bristles disappear over time. For that reason, we bought new ones frequently. To help combat the problem, down times and end of night cleaning was time to cover the grill and burn everything off down to metal on the grates, so there was never any sufficient build up for the bristles to stick to, thus ensuring that no find could pick up the bristles. That’s tedious and labour filled adventure, but I was willing to spend the labour to ensure customer safety. I have been using plastic bristles for a few years now. To stop them from melting I usually let the grill run long after I’m cooking, and everything stuck to the grates turns to ash, then I clean once cooled, and re-season. There has been a big push for companies pushing expensive wood scrapers to clean the grates. There are taking advantage of this bristle scare and WAY over charging. So if you want to go the wood scraper route, find a cheap one. I wanted to add my two cents to this conversation. But a big thumbs up to Ry for bringing this topic up, because there have been some horror stories up here and Canada, and a little awareness will go along way without having to spend $50 on a piece of wood. Thanks again.

Great advice and I wish more people would do the same. I stopped using them the moment I heard a story similar to the one you mentioned. When I talk to people about it they shrug it off and say "this has never happened to me so it'll be fine" - a view which can be compared to not taking out any insurance because a claim has never been filed before. It's better to be safe than to have to face the problem when it comes along.

Thanks for this. I've only recently gotten into grilling. My understanding is a brush in which the bristle are more securely held in a twisted wire thing, like Weber's 6493, are better than ones in which the bristles are just stuck into a wood base but maybe not. I also have a brush that is basically a steel wool disc that gets screwed onto a handle through a hole in the middle of the wool. Have not been able to find a similar brush that "America's Test Kitchen" recommends.

HI Chris, I have the Weber 6493 brush and didn't notice any sort of degeneration, yet I found a bristle in my mouth after grilling... I just purchased the Kona Safe Clean brush, hoping to not have anymore dangerous situations. Other videos I have watched suggest dipping the brush in water prior to scraping the grill, it seems to work very well.

I have This exact brush. The trick is to scrub on an angle..either 45 or a little less. If you use it straight with the grill direction. You will notice that the round brushes don't touch the surface, they brush the sides. If you use it on an angle,it will brush the top properly. Put it up straight on the grill and push down and look. You will see it's not touching the top of the grill.

Those metal brushes are only rated for about 400 strokes up and 400 strokes down when used to clean in an environment were food is prepared. Unfortunately this is on most products not mentioned at all. So probably if you replace the brushes every season of grilling you'll never have one come loose. I use a nice stainless steel brush with replaceable brushes and change them every 12 months or sooner when wear is visible. Probably the metal used these days is a cheaper easyer to produce blend of materials then it used to be with less quality. But the company's save on anything just to make a dime more on an product these days

I just bought a quality Weber triangular wire brush, intend to buy a new one every year. A couple of years ago I was having dinner with my wife in our RV. After eating a while I noticed some odd feeling on my tongue. I ran my finger across my tongue and I could feel something odd, with some minor pain. I went to the bathroom mirror and saw a tiny bit of wire sticking out. I used a tweezers to get a hold of it and pulled out a piece of wire about an inch long! I was lucky it didn't make it any further than my mouth. Never again. These wire bristle brushes should be banned. BANNED I TELL YOU! Now, when I got to stores that carry them, I tell the employees that they shouldn't carry those terrible products. Of course, my warnings fall on deaf ears and they keep on selling them.

I stopped using the stainless steel brush as mine was really dirty and needed cleaning. I washed it in a 5gal bucket and the pieces in the bottom of the bucket were numerous. After that, I tossed the brush and some kinda evil mojo from that bbq brush gave me a last jab. Walking back to patio near the bbq, I had a single wire bristle stick in the bottom of my foot. I went back to the old school wire brush from the hardware store.

If you have a tub of water you soak that metal brush into prior to scraping, your grates will get much cleaner with less scrubbing. Let the steam clean the grates. The tub of water also helps loosen the burnt food from the brush coils too.

I'm not saying that it couldn't hapoen, I'm saying the likelihood is miniscule. I've been grilling for over 30 years as well. Before that, my brothers, father, and mother all used the wire bristle brushes. Never had an issue. I just replaced mine after over 5 years of use. I obviously cleaned it off, but it was still in good shape, so I kept using it. Was I just lucky? Or could the accidents just be chalked up to just a bad instance of the product? Out of the millions of these brushes sold, how many people have been injured? Killed? How many BBQ joints use the wire brushes to clean their cookers? How many people have been injured or killed by bristles from these eateries? If it was really that monumental of an issue, they wouldn't be sold, period. If you're going to be that scared, you better not drive your car, use pubkic transportation, drink a beer or ride an amusement park ride. Don't throw people into a panicked frenzy over a few isolated instances. More people are injured or killed by automobiles in a month than have been injured or killed by wire bristle brushes in a year, by far.

Do you still use this brush? I was thinking of trying a wooden paddle where you burn the edge to the pattern of the grate. Would this be a good option on the Malory?

I do still use this brush. I’m not sure about the wooden paddle on the Malory since the grate thickness is so much more.

don't buy cheap wire brushes, always inspect the brush. and always look at the grate make sure its clean. I like that brush you have there. I be going out and looking for one.

I agree, the steam affect makes a big difference. I went to nylon brushes years ago but cleaning when the grates are hot will melt them over time.

I think that the real problem with these cheap wire brushes is that people keep them for too long so they get rusted and they become dangerous. Better change them each year or as soon as they show signs of being worn out. As the one that is depicted in this video. Screw the old brushes on a 1x1 veneer and use them as a mud cleaner for your shoes. This way metal wire will end in your shoe sole and not in your small intestine. Another good habit is to pass a wooden barbecue brush after having cleaned the BBQ with metal to remove any wire that could have escaped the visual examination. In all cases prudence is mandatory.

I had to go to the Dentist, due to having something stuck in my teeth that I was not able to remove. Guess what? very tiny metal bristle. Thank God, it was lodged in my teeth and not my throat or stomach. Egg on!

Great video but just one note to mention....Your grill grates are upside down. Flatter side should be facing up instead of pointy side.

Not on this grill. The angle is designed to shed grease downward.

I tried one of these coil brushes. No, it does NOT do the job. After scrubbing, my grill looked the same, and there was nothing...NOTHING...on the coils of the brush. Doesn't clean worth a darn. I'm going back to a well made wire bristle brush.

Last year i had to take my wife to the ER because she ingested a piece and it coursed its way into her intestine, She ended up getting 3 inches of her intestine removed because it perforated her intestine walls. So now i use a wooden grate cleaner if it breaks off it will burn away.

Aren’t you supposed to rinse the grill after brushing it? Just blast it with the hose after scrubbing. I would never think of scrubbing and then cooking the food on the grill. That’s like scrubbing your dishes and start using them without rinsing. The lazy way comes out to be more difficult.
