Back at Auto Illusions to try and figure out what actually happened to the Ranger when putting vodka in the Rangers gas tank, we know engine is not seized up so that's good news.. but she is not yet up and running.

Bump start. I had a manual Saturn SL2 that went through starters for some reason. Eventually I gave up and only parked where I could get a rolling start. I didn't even need a hill -I could push it from the A pillar and jump in 😆

Yeah when I watched that video, it was pretty obvious to me that the starter got killed. Solenoid died and the gear got stuck being meshed with the flywheel and burned the starter motor up. That’s why it made that scratchy sound for a few minutes. Usually the solenoid fails before it engages with the flywheel (in my experience) so that was interesting seeing it fail that way. The funny thing to me is this guy doesn’t seem like he knows a lot about auto mechanics, he’s just f**king with the truck and finding out what happens

@@adawg3032 I mean, that makes sense to me too, it’s not like everyone’s a mechanic. But at the same time, I do find it pretty comedic that he’s doing this seemingly without much knowledge of how it works. Usually the people that do this stuff explain what went wrong, etc, but this just guy’s just like “f**k it, let’s just send it and see what happens”

Had an 87 F150 with a similar issue. Ended up being the starter solenoid. Your starter is bad, but it could also be the solenoid too. When mine went out, it wouldn’t even turn on the indicator lights in the cluster (check engine, etc), and I noticed you didn’t have any lights either. Good luck! Enjoy what you’ve done to this poor truck hahaha

Yes, it was the starter, and you jammed it up when you let it idle and tried driving it while the starter was spinning. Once they fix the starter, you should disconnect the battery so the computer resets too. Then it can relearn everything with the vodka in the tank.

I so love this truck my favorite truck ever, so glad that it’s possibly just the starter and glad they were able to turn the motor and can’t wait to possibly see it run again and yet that’s some dark vegetable oil definitely, tks for the good update Mike and love the videos :)

I said the same thing when I watched that video lol. I didn’t know it’s a standard transmission but I made a comment explaining how the starter motor failed and suggested roll starting it if it’s a stick shift, it would’ve fired back up and he could’ve used up the rest of the vodka in the tank

Also, it probably died because ethyl alcohol doesn’t release as much energy as gasoline does when it combusts. It is possible to run an engine on ethyl alcohol, but the engine isn’t going to run as well unless the car is designed to adjust the air/fuel ratio to compensate for it. There are cars that are designed to run E85 gasoline, which is 85% ethanol, and they can run it just fine. Vodka is typically 40% alcohol, which is enough for it to combust, but that’s also 60% water. so you’re basically running an engine with watered down fuel, on top of using fuel that isn’t as efficient as gasoline. As a result, the engine isn’t going to produce much power, and it’ll die pretty easily if you’re not keeping the RPMs a bit higher than idle. Edit: at least that’s the explanation for why it would die specifically with vodka in the tank. considering he put vegetable oil in the engine (and who knows what else), there could be any number of other reasons why it would’ve died. Pretty entertaining to watch though haha

he was frying the starter trying to start it on vodka , fried the starter, truck died bc it was trying to run on vodka, starter was fried after frying it so could not start anymore.

Starters on those rangers can be a pain In last video you could of at least got the 50% alcohol vodka lol, but from my experience doing this the sugars/additives possibly gummed things up (only time i have managed to run things on that low % alcohol are old tractors or low compression engines with carbs an typically the timing has had to be played with) but who knows and sure we will find out in the next addition of Danger Ranger :)

I've had 3 rangers. Extremely reliable trucks. All manual transmission s. If the starter doesn't work, you push start it. If the solenoid fails, you jump the solenoid terminals. If the neutral safety switch fails at the clutch pedal, you use a jumper wire.

I'm sorry, but did they say the voltage was at 12.0 V ? Because that is a discharged battery! A full charged battery is 12.6 V minimum. How do you know the battery is good? Did they test it? If so what sort of test did they run on it? The only proper way to test a battery is to use a carbon pile load tester and have it be full charged. If they used a piece of shit internal resistance tester then they are full of shit.

No. Nobody wants to admit the obvious. Its hydro locked. You cant run ur truck on vodka. It wont burn properly. Injectors dont regulate it properly. And too much unburned fluid is in the cylinders. @@gabrielv.4358

Just make sure it's running rich. To run alcohol at the track they are on the rich side to keep it cool as alcohol burn hotter.

Vodka is not all alcohol. It’s a lot of water as well. 70% isopropyl minimum makes great gas line antifreeze. That rust is only surface rust. That can be restored. I love those “baby pickups” as my brother called them when he was young. Lesson: Veg oil BASE is great but in the raw without an additive package…..not so wise lol Also: if you wish to run a vehicle off of Olaf make certain he gives the truck some warm hugs first😂😂😂

I own a 96 ranger, has extended cab and is the 4.0 V6 SAME COLOR as this one. I let my dad have it now for his daily, I miss driving it alot. Seeing this thing get beat up over and over again helps me keep mine in good condition (decently) it has like 65000 miles on it now I bought it back in 2020 when it had 43000 miles on it.

I would have put a jump pack on the battery in case it went bad. Then, bench test the starter instead of guessing. If the starter spins, would have to be the solenoid on the fender. This what my Dad's mechanic would do in the 60's when faced with the same situation....

Vodka is water and fermented yeast. The fermentation process isn't complete, and most vodka is at most 50% ethanol. That means you used ethanol and sugar water as fuel. Sugar in the fuel mixture is bad. I'd say 100% ethanol would've yielded much better results. My guess at this point is even with the new starter its not going to run.

I'm no expert, but assuming the Ranger would have an inertia based disengagement system in the starter, it's probably taking longer to fully disengage, and might even be engaging and disengaging when the engine's struggling.

I'm not a regular viewer so I don't know if this is a manual ranger, but some rangers are manual transmissions, if this one is manual, then you could rule the starter out by roll starting the ranger.

Bro its hydro locked. 100%. Put a scope down there. I bet anything the cylinder walls are scored and the pistons are bent. Has to be the nosie that was heard. The unburned vodka in the cylinders cant be compressed and bent the pistons. And it also appears ur battery is dead from all the cranking. Just becasue it turns doesnt mean it isnt hydro locked. Also dudes hitting the starter and you clearly have no power.

It's a Ford, it will run forever. Not counting normal wear and tear, I had a ranger with 623,000 miles on the original motor. Had to replace the starter 5 times alternator 2 times and other parts but it ran till it literally blew up, most reliable vehicle I ever owned.

I wish Mike would do a collaboration with Matt at Bleepin' Jeep. If Matt is onboard, he's got a vs channel where Mike could run the vs challenge and see if he wants to do a Danger rock crawler build. Mike could do a series of videos while he, or his audience, decides whether to do a Rock Crawler truck, Track truck or a Drag Truck. I think he should do a Danger rock crawler; start with a collaboration with Matt at Bleepin' Jeep on what he needs to build Danger and hopefully, run the vs challenge. Mike could request an invitation from Matt at Matt's Offroad Recovery to join "Offroad Games," formerly known as, "Wrecker Games," around this time next year. Ken at Palm Beach Dyno likes Fords; maybe he could advise you on dropping a Godzilla in Danger?
