3 жыл бұрын

AS PROMISED, I REVISITED THE DANGEROUS LEGGS MILLS ROAD CROSSING IN LAKE KATRINE NY, OTHER THAN THE REPLACEMENT TRACK SEGMENT BEING ASSEMBLED, THATS IT. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO ADDRESS THE CROSSING ITSELF. THE RAIL IS COMPLETELY LOSE AND BEGINNING TO SPLAY OUT .
THIS SECTION IS STILL UNDER SPEED RESTRICTIONS.
I ALSO GOT A VIST FROM A DEPUTY SHERIFF DEPUTY "WHAT'S UP?" TOLD HIM RAIL FAN ACTIVITY.
SO I WILL AGAIN VIST THIS SITE TO CHECK OUT THE PROGRESS.

Nothing wrong with the track, the road is the issue. Simply shut the road before a road vehicle dislodges part of the crossing causing an obstruction on the rails. Rail flexing is normal.

All railway tracks go slightly down and up as the vehicles’ wheels roll over them. The ballast (crushed rock) provides a small amount of cushioning. If the rails were clamped to heavy concrete footings the impact of the wheels on the rails would be multiplied.

If it’s so dangerous and could derail any moment why do you keep standing so close to the track? I never saw the rail moving in your video at all. I did see the crossing panels moving when the autos crossed over them. Most rail does flex up and down as each truck moves over and off of a given section of rail.

Get a tape measure and LOOK 👀 👁 what 4 inches is! Education BEFORE Description goes a l o n g way. Rail is designed to move, it's called "deflection". If you are expecting a derailment, the rail would need to move almost 4 inches to allow the wheel to drop into the gage. So, with welded rails at this spot, I don't see that happening 😕. Look and learn before Description.

I got a visit from the police the first time I hung out there. There's also this one guy, clearly with some kind of alcohol abuse problem, who has a hatred of trains because his son was killed by one. I have installed several of these concrete crossing panel sets and these were not put in correctly. They are supposed to be welded together and they should be installed on new ties, preferably concrete ones with rubber pads under the panels. They can be installed directly on new wooden ties, but the steel edges need to be welded together so that they are solid. If the ties are already older when the crossing is installed, they will be falling apart by the time the crossing panels need to be replaced and will accelerate the deterioration of the panels. The ties are in bad enough shape that the rail rolling outward is possible. That is what happened with the UP train that derailed on the Santa Fe Junction bridge over the Missouri River in Kansas City in 2020.

This is a very common. Not something to worry about snd say “this could be a derailment at any time” as you stand closer, which made no sense🤦🏻‍♂️. Everything is completely fine here with the rail itself. This is very common for the rails to bounce at crossings! It will take a lot to cause a derailment. The only issue is the concrete pad that transitions into the road. Those always break down, which are more for the automobile traffic Plus it’s NY. The infrastructure is constantly breaking down and always play catch up. Been this way for decades.

Can't any crews that repair road crossings make them smoother to drive a car across without losing your teeth implants, busting your vehicles tie-rods, snapping shocks, suspension bars, and shaking your kidneys into your bowels? In some of the train track /road crossings that I drove over, the newly rebuilt crossings were more hazardous than driving over the crappy ones in the first place. Somebody needs to send these repair crews back to repair school. Stoned and severely drunk workers can do a better job fixing these crossings than the crews they have now. Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder, and The Three Stooges, could rebuild these train vehicle crossings so much better than the current repair crews out there.

Signals are visible in the video, the interesting thing is that they are placed on the Conductor side of the track instead of the Engineer side on single track line. But that is not a big deal even if the RR’s go to one man crews. I am against that, too many jobs lost and you have DPU’s and two mile long trains and you need a conductor imo. The rail looks at least 130 lb. and is in pretty good shape but I have never worked as a track inspector or anything although for several years my neighbor was one. He did complain that he was strongly discouraged from closing down a track and deferring maintenance to save money. This was many years ago though, not truly current information. Two weeks ago I saw a intermodal stopped at a red light at just after noon, came back by there at 3:10 and it was still stopped. Then I saw the white and yellow track maintenance equipment further down the line. This is a mainline with 14-17 trains per 24 hours so that crew and others must have been hugely frustrated as their 12 hours ticked away and they never moved an inch closer to the home/away terminal. Not fun waiting for a transit van to try and find you when you time out many miles from the crew change point.

I lived in both Ulster and Dutchess counties. One of the things I hated about NY road construction and maintenance was how they could never do anything well, even when they redid it two or three times. The guys' attitude is, "I don't care. I'm getting paid to do this job again. I'll do it as many times as they want." They don't have the mindset of doing the job right the first time so you DON'T have to do it a second time. Here is an example of that stupid attitude.

I've seen rail flexure much more pronounced than that on a lot of grade crossings. The rail and ties are more captive embedded in the crossing material than where exiting from the crossing so there is flexure when the wheels enter and exit the crossing. It looks pretty bad for the cars and trucks but probably isn't worrisome for the railroad as long as the concrete slabs aren't interfering with the rail car wheels. On the subject of trespassing, I do a lot of railfanning myself and I've been "informed" by Law Enforcement (Railroad and County) that a good rule of thumb is to stay a minimum of 50 feet from the center line of the right of way at all times. I've never been harassed or questioned when following that rule.

Being on same plane of the gate and down the track a little bit, instead of being by the road, isn't a good decision on this guy either.

They may just close the road until they get a crew to install the new crossing assembly and surround.

If you walk in any direction from the crossing you’ll see the rail flexing the same amount. Boring

There's a CSX transportation called lie on the crossing so you call them they know what's wrong and fix it maybe they going to shut down the road

Huh? The tracks are fine. It's the concrete pads beside the rails that's wasted. Obviously, CXS has prepared the new track segment. I would suggest that the New York State DOT is holding up the repair, not CSX. Observe and think a little before making ignorant comments.
@trackdawg7637
@trackdawg7637 3 жыл бұрын
Yes CSX has plans to rework the crossing. They have the panel built to put in. They cant just close down a crossing. The ties under the concrete are shot. You can see the mud spot on the edge of the crossing.

there is no complete failure of the crossing. I don't see any rails flopping around, I see road panels moving, but not the rail. All rail goes up and down when a train crosses it, it has to flex to support the weight.

Idk what you see w a rail going up and down and you said 4-6inches. How is it possible for you to see that? I have 20/20 vision and I don't even see it.

This level crossing is in a very bad shape. There is a bolt sticking out about 1 inch from the concrete path there. Some cars had very low edges, almost hitting that bolt. Have you sent this video to the responsible party? Something must be done here.

@@hudsonvalleyrailandriverandair i saw that video after making my comment. there needs to be a phone number at every crossing so people can report issues like that or if a car gets stuck for a reason. it would be faster and safer then calling 911 and waiting 20 minutes for them while the next train comes thru.

the ofc. knows nothing about trains obviously. the road grade crossing has nothing to do with the rails. All rails flex. He should walk miles of any line and you'll see that.

It would have been nice if your camera was positioned to see the train coming down the tracks before the gates were activated...besides it looks like the train is traveling at a fast pace..

My sentiment also. "The train is coming. The train is getting closer. I'm rail fanning" and all we see is the gate. Then here is the train.
