I would only use a transparent insulation if the wire was a thick copper. This wire really isn't something the maker should want to reveal :).

It's not 0.0062mm², it's 0.062mm². Still only 29AWG so way too thin. Proper extensions like this have 18AWG or 20AWG cable, so if a short occures, the breaker will trip first.

I didn't notice any green flame. Did you? But maybe they just came accross a lot of scrap zinc... It could also be some alloy of 2 or 3 metals like Copper + Aluminium + Iron. Some alloys of iron may not be magnetic...

DiodeGoneWild; You might be right about the iron alloy. The blueish-green colour is just there for a moment, left of the main lighter flame, which makes me suspicious that it could be a galvanized alloy. It could also have come from copper, but if so, then why does the colour only happen for a moment once you heat a piece of wire up? The coppery colour was underneath of the silver, so should theoretically be present in the bulk material. Also, I really don't think they would use copper in the bulk of the wire, since brass, bronze or some copper-iron alloy would be more expensive than simple aluminium or even copper coated aluminium.

DiodeGoneWild; Could you perhaps find a piece of the wire which is still unburnt, and put it into some vinegar? Seeing which part of the wire (if any) reacts, should help narrow it down quite a bit. (Sorry if I'm being overly neurotic about this... I just really dislike unsolved mysteries XD)

I'm obviously not suggesting that you spend even more time on this than you already have.: (The simplest confirmatory test that I can think of, would be to precipitate the Fe as its hydroxide. However, that would require dissolving the wire in a strong acid, like swimming pool HCl or H2SO4 (or perhaps just electrolyzing some acidified salt water to corrode the anode?), and then basifying the solution with drain cleaner NaOH, also known as caustic soda, to look for a brown precipitate. Unfortunately, I'm an electrical engineer, so my chemistry knowledge is somewhat lacking...)

If that were the case, then it would, at minimum, need to have a fuse for its rated current to even begin to meet any sort of standards. However, it's poorly constructed and the plugs themselves are non-compliant. In other words, it's not even supposed to be used to power Christmas lights.

I have the 16A circuit breaker :). If someone in the UK plugs a EU appliance using a cheap adapter, it's only fused by the 32A breaker. The same applies to dodgy appliances with UK plug, but no fuse in it. In any country, people have to be a bit wary what they plug in. Is brass really used for conductors? It's more expensive yet less conductive than aluminium. To me it doesn't make much sense. And also using just pure copper, you make a wire of the same resistance, but thinner and cheaper.

Ooops i got that wrong, more like a brass coating on something else. It was about 6 years ago and it looked wrong, too light and shiney. It must have been aluminium wires with a coat of brass, sorry my memory is getting a bit mixed up. It didnt look right.

@Vinyl Hendrickx A 50m reel (1.5mm2 copper) has a total resistance of 1Ohm. A short circuit on the end of that cable will give you a peak current of over 200A which is more than enough to trip your 20A breaker (might even trip the main breaker). Most of those reels have a builtin breaker (the little red button that pops and can be reset). There are also some smaller reels (10m) using only 0.75mm2 copper and even those should be safe to use as long as you don't chain a bunch of those or overload them (check the rating on the reel).

Yes, and it aslo allows you to plug in appliances that have to be grounded. There are some 2-wire extensions in the EU, but those have the socket in a deep recess to prevent those situations.

In Czech republic, the appartments with gas supply have 1 phase intake (not so much power needed for stove, heating, hot water...), the ones with no gas supply have 3 phase intake. The main breaker before the electricity meter is 25A or 3x 25A and the wire is 4 mm2. Then this goes into a box with numerous breakers, usualy one for each room. The sockets have 16A class B breakers and 2.5 mm2 wires. The light circuit usually has two breakers, one for bathroom+toilet and one for the rest of the appartment. Those two light breakers are usualy 10A B and the wire is 1.5 mm2. Until recently, we used only breakers. Few years ago, additional RCD's (GFI's) became compulsory for more safety. But appartments from before 2015 often have no RCD. And appartments from before 1996 have the dreaded wiring with ground and neutral being just a single wire, used for both grounding and as a return of live. So called PEN wire. When this wire accidentally breaks or a screw terminal becomes loose, the the ground in all sockets becomes live via the impedance of the appliances :).
