I had a viewer accuse me of showing false things on one of my videos, this video is to show that I was not showing anything false or recommending you guys to do anything unsafe. Now lets just see how hot this wood stove gets at 1800 and how hot that stove pipe gets.

So the deal is, the outside of the stove has different (lower temps) then obviously the inside of the stove. The condor cat probe that reads 1500 - 2200 deg is what the inside of the fire box reads. Remember these stoves are designed with fire bricks, baffles, cat chambers to burn hot and efficient. Since many woodstoves do not have the internal probe many user's are directed my stove manufacturers to install a stove top thermometer and or a chimney pipe thermometer. For the stove top thermometer a cruising stove will run between 500-650deg, an over fire situation could develop if the stove top temps start running into the 700's, damage could occur when stove top temps are in the 800's, remember the fire is hotter in the inside of the stove. For the chimney pipe - temps run differently, depending whether you have a cat stove or a epa air tube re-burn stove, generally stoves that run with a catalytic converter will have lower chimney pipe temps then stove that have air re-burn tubes, that's because the cat stove can burn more efficiently under lower temps (cat lights off) and the epa stove needs higher temps to reburn the unburnt smoke (ie: take more heat to achieve a clean burn, more heat = more heat up the flue) With cat stoves you don't want the cat prob to run higher then 2,000deg f, premature cat failure can occur when they are exposed to very high stove top temps or direct flame impingement. Dutch - keep doing what your doing, remember to burn dry wood, under 20% moisture content, it can take green oak up to 2 years split and stacked to get below 20% moisture content.

I've been using a 1980 Alaska Kodiak stove since 1980 all day, all winter. From experience I will say that if the pipe aint glowing red it'll be fine.

My stove is a simple cast iron box. No bricks, no cannibal converters, no nuthin'. I frequently get the bottom of the chimney pipe glowing red. Of course, I cut the air intake then, and let'er cruise. I thoroughly clean every inch of my chimney every year, and burn a creosote log thingy every 10 weeks. Been doing this for more than ten years. That thermometer, for me, would be like looking up symptoms on the internet. I'd be panicking, thinking I got the fungilitis for sure. Running a stove is like playing an instrument. Some folks play by ear; some folks can't play a note without that dang paper stuffed up in their grill. Just sayin'

So if I run mine real hot like that every night its ok? I chimney sweeped right before winter started. I have a drafty house currently so I run it hot to compensate until I fix it. Just want to make sure its safe if I had it cleaned good once this year??
@crabcake43011
@crabcake43011 3 жыл бұрын
@@adamcooley6555 The answer to if it’s safe can’t be answered without a thorough assessment of your system. In my case, I have a Listed stainless steel flue liner coupled directly into my well maintained EPA non-cat insert. I also monitor the temperature of the air baffle, not the flue to guide my firing. The other factor at play is what is the current state of your flue. Just cause it was cleaned before winter doesn’t mean it doesn’t have creosote waiting to be ignited. If you’re going to burn hot, you have to make this a habit from day one or you do risk lighting deposits that may have taken hold in the flue. Best advice anyone can give you is have a pro look at your system and get a recommendation. How do you know they are a pro? Ask them if they will inspect to NFPA-211. If you get silence or a deer in the head lights look, move to the next “ expert”.

I have a magnetic thermometer on my single wall pipe 18" above the stove top. The thermometer usually reads between 400°f - 500°f. Ive been burning wood for 35+ years. Nothing wrong with having your stove at these temps. Keep your chimney and pipes clean ( I sweep mine after every cord of wood I run through it) and keep fire burning hot and efficient and you will have no issues.

I am new to wood burning, but my pipe seems cool by comparison - I also have a magnetic temperature sensor setup about 18 inches above my stove top, but the pipe usually stays within the 200-250F range, even while the stove top reaches 500-600F. This is my first year running the stove, and the winter has been mild so far, so I have only been burning in the early morning and later at night when it is the coldest, and only for an hour or two at a time. Maybe I am not burning for long enough to really heat the pipe?
@Anthony_Spilotro
@Anthony_Spilotro 2 жыл бұрын
@@anduinxbym6633 Is your wood seasoned and dry? Your temp gauge should be reading hotter than that. Usually between 300-500°f is a good efficient fire. And do you have smoke coming from your chimney? Next time you have a good fire going , check the chimney and see if theres smoke coming out. If you do...either your wood is wet or you need more air to the fire. Opening the draft all the way will help. You dont want to see smoke... This means your fire isnt burning hot enough or your wood os too wet , this will create problems with creosote later on , and that my friend your dont want. You'll get the hang of it as you go.

@@Anthony_Spilotro All of the wood I have been using is at least half a year old, with the oldest having been cut in the winter of last year. I did look at my chimney while it was burning, and did not see any smoke. I am not sure what kinds of wood I am burning though. I live near a large forest, and I am using a wide variety of wood from that forest. The majority comes from a single downed tree that fell due to a lighting strike. I cut it to pieces with a chainsaw and then split the pieces with an axe, but I collected a fair amount of volunteer wood from the nearby forest as well.

@@anduinxbym6633I’ve read that magnetic thermometer on single wall stove pipe will show about half of what the internal flue temperature is. So if your seeing 250 on the outside of the pipe it’s likely closer to 500 inside which is well above the condensation point of 250 which means your chimney should be getting very little build up inside.

SO; my data collection is NOT complete (read; to my liking) but my *Inferno* Stovetop Thermometer (freebie from retailer of stove) reads 500-650° F seated on the top WHEN I "like" the visual "smoke output" (read; NONE). The heat has to go through a CAT, soapstone and cast iron. At 550° when I set the thermometer on the double-walled (good for 1200° fancy-smancy "modern" stove pipe) 14" up, the temperature reads 300° ... So unless I install an internal(s), I can NEVER know my true firebox or CAT combustor temp. What I DO know is the CAT is VERY sensitive to "seasoning" and CAT stoves should NOT EVEN be allowed to be sold in the Pacific North West Cascades as moisture volume is generally too high in recently purchased, "seasoned" wood AND unless one has literally, "for sure", with your own efforts, seasoned it yourself for three years after purchase, CATS MAY not even have a "best chance" of proper operation. Does the little Craftsbury easily heat 1400 square feet; yes. Do I trust that the "new and improved" CAT tech of 2022 is NOT building creosote and will need to replaced inside of three years at exorbitant cost; NO ... Time will tell ...

My flu on my wood stove was red one day and scared me. Stuff was falling down from it and I had black flakes on the snow outside my house. What do I do to maintain my stove and flu and check for damage. I let the fire burn and lowered the temp to around 300 f. Before it was at around 550-600. I was terrified. Thank you
@aaronmarshall
@aaronmarshall 4 жыл бұрын
Just close the air down a bit on it. 550-600 is on the high end, but acceptable. It's more dangerous around 300 F. 200-300 is what is building up that creosote. Don't let the fire smolder. Close the air down so a flame is still going, but not raging, but not so much that it's smoldering. It should be burning. Ideal temp is around 450F. 550-600 is getting a bit too hot, but if not sustained for too long, it should be ok if your pipe is in good shape. One thing I'd always have around is a chimney extinguisher. You can find them where stove supplies are sold. If your fire does get out of hand, you just throw it in, and it has chemicals that release and puts out the fire. It's like a tiny firebrick, but is designed to suffocate the fire. Have one of those around, and a standard fire extinguisher as well just for a precaution.

Sorry Dutch - Your CAT is running 1800 degrees, not the stove. Your original video said you got the stove temperature up to 1800 (actually closer to 2000 degrees) - you made no mention of a CAT. I'll still maintain that temperatures anywhere near that kind of temperature IN THE FIREBOX itself is way too hot. Catalytics are designed to burn the gases, just like in your car, reducing emissions and just like your car, cat temp is NO indication of engine (stove) temp. Not all stoves are cat equipped.

Keeping It Dutch - No way that stove is not rated to handle those 5 logs that fit in there with so much room to spare... And your stove pipe is obviously warm enough to avoid creosote build up, but not so hot there is much flu fire risk... Not with the damper closed, and not at those temps... I personally think most of the hot air is here in the comments...
