Pe'ahi, also known as Jaws, is a wave that is not for the faint of heart. Getting in the water when the waves are bumping is a test of patience and experience. The bay is nothing but big boulders, and the current is strong. The waves come in sets and it can be like a big washing machine. Even watching it can be pretty scary.
For those who do decide to surf Pe'ahi, it's important to have a good understanding of the currents and the sets. The boulders in the bay can make it difficult to paddle out, but with experience, you'll be able to find the right spot to catch the wave.
It's also important to have a good level of fitness and to be comfortable in big surf. Even then, it can be a challenging and intimidating experience. But for those who are up for the challenge, Pe'ahi offers some of the biggest and most exhilarating waves in the world. So, if you're ready to test yourself against one of the most powerful waves in the world, then Pe'ahi is the place to be.

This is surfing folks. If somebody made a surf movie of a typical surf session it would be 95% paddling. Paddling out, paddling for position, paddling to catch a wave, paddling back out after catching a wave.

30 years ago I got two waves on a paddle out with a 7-6" there on a nearly perfect day. I was exhausted when I got out just from the climb down and paddle out. I was delirious by the time I caught my second wave. A cleanup set came through as I was paddling back out and so I turned and went in. I was barely able to get back to the truck I was so tired. So I never bothered again. I surf goofy anyways. We didn't call it jaws then. Hell I didn't even know what it was called . Now I bore people with my , I surfed jaws story. If I had known, I wouldn't have paddled out. Lol Now I'm just an old man on a tanker surfing head high at my best. But I'm still here on Maui after all these years.

@ronan22
@ronan22 3 жыл бұрын
take off was just for fun, and he hangs onto his board and rolls over so he can get under the wave and still be on his board making it easier to paddle out
@dajepero
@dajepero 3 жыл бұрын
I liked that move. By jumping off the board he can get deep and under that thick whitewater. He was hanging on his board so that he can get back onto it fast without having to pull it back. That paddle out does not look makeable under those conditions, it didn't look like anyone else was going for it.

No respect for the power of mother nature! Not only was the situation impossible with the waves hitting him faster than he could paddle out, he then gets raked over the boulders. This was predictable! That he didn’t get injured or get his board broken into smithereens is a miracle! That he was unintelligible, spoke to something being wrong.
