I was just as surprised as everyone else when we saw how good Volk was on the ground, and how good Islam was on his feet. I had it 3-2 Islam, and don't get robbery claims. I hate that its becoming more common for people to just cry robbery after every close fight. I think most people scored it 3-2 Islam. Would love to see these guys have another fight again, but only after they return to their division and put up a title defense or two. Definitely need to see Islam have a good with Beneil, and Volk has a go with Yair before they have another superfight.

It was partly as advertised in that it was said Volk would be very good in the striking and Makhachev the wrestling. The opposite thing happened. They also said that Islam would dominate easily and gave Volk very little chance of winning.

Thank you for explaining the round breakdowns. So tired of seeing people say Volk won just because he had a good end of 5th round, or that he was up 4 rounds on Islam. It's like everyone ignored every shot Islam threw and got over excited if Volk landed a single shot. Seems like everyone had viewer bias.

Seems like Islam fans are very bias, you forget that volk dropped Islam 3 times and wobbled him 4 times and got takedowns with amazing takedown defense! He also finished the whole fight in the dominant position!

Wait a minute. You are TIRED? I just watched Round 2 and there is no question in my mind one stumbling offset punch doesn't outweigh the rest of the work Volk did in Rd 2. And DC says Volk won 3 and 5. So people have a good point to say Volk won. You cant say he only had a good END of round 5. He friggin dropped Islam and beat his face black and blue for the last nearly 2 minutes of the fight. Islam couldn't get up. If that fight was in ONE they would have judged that a win for Volk because clearly he would have finished Islam in another round. IF there were one. So, if Volk won rd 2 and 3 he definitely won rd 5. That's the ballgame.

The 24 hr rehydration vs 36 made a huge difference for Islams strength, cardio and chin. Look at his body compared to in other fights, he looks way morw skinny/frail in this matchup. Just look at his celebrations after subbing Charles or Hooker and him flexing and yelling, chest shoulders arms back way fuller than this matchup. I worry for volk if they rematch with standard rehydration time the grappling goes very different. Regardless, I think Islam might be capable of simply winning on the feet.

No way islam can win I’m the feet. For the rematch , if there is one, you will see Volk will be quicker in the feet. There was hesitance due to take down possibility . Volk will dial in.

I'm with you on the fight. I just watched the fight again with fresh eyes, and I can see why Makhachev won. Last night I thought Volk won, maybe because I expected Makhachev to dominate the fight like Khabib use to do. But yea, Mackachev won it. It was close though, " Mad props to Volk". I think the difference in stamina, was match experience. Volk is use to fighting 5 round fights, and I think this was Makhachec first 5th rounder. I love to see Volk get another crack at it, in a neutral location, like Las Vegas. Watching the fight with the crowd cheering on every strike for Volk paints a favorable picture for Volk, in my opinion.

With the fight ending with our boy getting smashed, it had my mind reeling. A fight for the ages. As an Islam fan, I believe this gives him something to work on. He didn’t expect Volks wrestling to be that good. I know they didn’t take Volk lightly, but no one saw that coming except Volk. Volk said from the beginning “I’m sure he can take me down, because t I will get back up “. I know Islam is as excited and emotions were high, but Volks calmness and humble demeanor is awesome. Much, much respect.

2-3-5 Volk. 2 was close. Islam got his face smashed in round 5 and was completely gassed. Volk looked like he could fight another 5 rounds.

I think if it happens again this time it should be on Makhachev turf (why neutral?) Russia or Abu Dhabi. I see Makhachev doing much better next time round... Makhachev said he didn't get enough time to recover from weight cut (24+ hours vs 36+ hours) and it was his first 5 round fight. Seeing Makhachev still pulled a victory against all odds & pressure on enemy turf shows Makhachev is elite of elite

Definitely looked great, but you can see how the size difference played into him not being able to take Islam down. I get that nobody takes Islam down but he had good position on 2 occasions and couldn’t get him down.

What did Islam do with his takedowns? Volk landed more punches on the ground when Islam took him down, than Islam landed on Volk. And wow, the last round, the last minute. Volk put on A BEATING on Islam. He made Islam look like his child who behaved Ill 🤣 🤣 🤣

Volk fought exceptionally well and he would definitely be a top 3 LW today. I do think for as good as Alex was, Islam was a bit off colour and it didn’t look like he prepared tactically for this fight. That being said, Islam’s striking is way better than we all thought and Volk’s grappling has improved significantly.

On the scale, Islam didn't look good at all. Could have been a bad weight cut, could be different time zone/travel effecting performance...But Volk is just too good. He can come up to lightweight and easily be in top 5, if not top 3. It was a real P4P 1 V P4P2. Nobody is unbeatable, the praise for Volk is actually the praise for Makhachev, on a bad night he can get a decision win on P4P number 1 fighter in the world.

Watched it back multiple times now. The only round that wasn't obvious live was the 2nd. But overall Islam did more damage and hurt Volk in that round. Good decision by the judges

For me it was clear that Islam won,but Volk gave him hell. Islam connect the most clean shots and hardest shots,had octagon control and had the take downs. Volk just never gave up and got stronger in the last rounds. The rounds were close but Islam wins them slightly.

Yah I just rewatched it. I initially thought Volk won but after rewatching I could see why Islam did. Islam was connecting better in the stand up. It just didn’t look like he was having a fun time doing it 😅 Volk had a moment in the 1st and 5th where Makhachev was clearly on the verge of being taken out. But round by round, it was hard to score it against Islam.

The difference between khabib and islam is khabib is much more violent in a fight, even belal said, khabib doesnt let anyone breathe even in training, If Khabib had volks back like islam did, he would choke him out whereas makhachev was just clinging on not going for any submissions or any fierce ground and pound like khabib would.

But at the same time, khabib doesn't have the defense of Makachev on the feet. Makachev looked incredible in the striking exchanges against Volk. Khabib's aggressive style leaves him much more open for shots.

I agree with Daniel, great fight ,, close fight but any time Alex achieved a half strike the arena exploded and any time Islam smashed Alex the crowd fell silent, that's why some fans believe Alex won but the judges were spot on.

Islam just beat Charles Oliveira and Alexander Volkanovski in his first two title fights, let that sink in. Also huge props to Volk for this amazing, razon thin match. To nullify Islam's wrestling like that, you gotta be on a another level. I honestly don't think there is anyone on lightweight roster who can do that currently, this was probably the hardest fight Islam could get.

When it comes to win streaks and super fights. This was the best fight at the highest competitive level. I thought Islam showed very impressive striking and Volk Showed astounding Wrestling Defence. I have no problem with the decision other than volk should've won rd 3 on all score cards. I think this fight alone has made them both significantly better and that they're next fights we're going to see better improved versions of each other which excites me for the prospect of them running it back. Without a doubt for all Islam was Praised to be, Volk gave him his toughest challenge. In Rd 5 with Volk scoring a knockdown and ending the fight on top... it can't end like that 😂 i wanna see part 2. Both these guys are incredible fighters and are just levels above everyone else.

Volk vs Islam will go down as one of my favorite fights of all time and a lot of had to do with Volk being from Australia, the card being in Australia, and the way Volk was always essentially communicating to the Australian crowd through the big screen. It was one of the fights that I will add to my short list that makes my heart literally feel like its going to beat out of my chest.

Both fighters are warriors, it was genuinely a privilege to watch them go toe to toe. Reflecting on it, Islam had the edge, Volk did well to negate the size difference and showed pure class in his grappling. But Islam demonstrated his character and proved he can survive himself, when in deep water. Props to both, nothing but respect 🫡

First I thought volk won(emotions )but later when I rewatched the match closely I see Islam striking clearly ; less volume but clear damage ! Volk looked active by having more volume but many shots missed no wrestling expert end ! Judges did a great job by being non biased and giving the championship belt back to the right winner

FINALLY, a voice of reason within the MMA talking head community. I watched the fight completely objectively. No horse in the race. I had Islam winning rounds, one and two and then round three I had it as a draw. I had Islam winning round four and Volk winning round five. I can see where the one judge gave round three to Islam making it four rounds to one. People were caught up in a mass hysteria for some reason about Volk winning that fight. Even MMA guys. Weirdness.

I think Islam won but he wasn't all there. You could see it in his eyes and he looked smaller than normal. His normal strength just wasn't there. The tough weight cut and almost 12 hours less recovery time than normal really effected him. I really hope Khabib is there next time to take over his training and weight cut.

That isn’t debatable. 2 and 3 were close but if you go strike for strike, takedowns, control/time Islam won those as well. You could have scored it 3-2 Islam or 4-1 Islam. The only round that you could say with 100% confidence that Volk won was Round 5, that’s it!

I love so many things about this fight but at the end of the day, we had the 2 best ever going at it and in the end boths stocks rose. I was rooting for Volk but I had it 3-2 Islam. I'm dying for a rematch. I hope it gets made within a year (possible if we're lucky).

I think that Volk did absolutely amazing. And because people doubted him I think that shines really bright. However, I do think that fact is clouding the technicalities of the fight. I’m the kinda person who can take an L if it’s there without hesitation, it was a really close fight, but the L really wasn’t there. 3-2 is completely fair and so was the unanimous decision. I was surprised it was unanimous, I won’t lie, but it makes sense. 49-46 is a lil questionable though. I’ll also admit that. It wouldn’t have made a difference though. Edit: Volk gained a new fan yesterday.
