I’m a 71 year old man who was raised in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. I was lucky to go to a LCMS high school where we studied other religions and I continued to study other religions when in college. I found that all populations from around the world had their own religions and that they were made up by humans for their time. I became an atheist soon after. I’m glad that you had Daniel Dennett on your program as he was a major contributor to my turning atheist. Brilliant conversation.

I don’t understand why you would think that just because you don’t agree with the tenets of a particular religion or any other religion you would automatically assume that there is no God. If only there were like a universal religion. Don't misunderstand, people can be free to choose as they believe (and vice versa), but if there was just some sort of global church that was widely-present in different places, but with a single center where everything could be hashed out in a spirit of holiness. And preferably with some sort of pedigree. Basically one, holy, universal, and pedigreed church. I would totally join a church that had those 4 conditions.

@@MarcillaSmith But "religion", by definition, is unsupported by evidence. It would be called "science" if it were otherwise. This makes it impossible to find any agreement (which is why there are so many religions, but only 1 "chemistry", for example). Great interview. CNN ran a really interesting story the other day about why people are reluctant to call themselves atheists. It also explored how atheists are perceived. Which is the antithesis to my experience. I personally have never had a belief in the supernatural and, like Mr. Dennett touched on, that "needing" something can easily be replaced by what we see around us. Particularly nature. When religion all but expires for humanity, which will happen, it'll be a much smoother runway for life.

Daniel Dennett, thank you for you kind words regarding people "who have no one to love them" at the end of your interview. Indeed, an important role for religion. As a primary care physician for 3 years I can attest to this, and feel grief over its loss with the loss of faith in community - quite apart from the question of the existence of God. Having followed the path of atheism in my own life development, and having been influenced by your thought, I have come around (over many years) to feel and believe that in fact the notion of "God" means something - something deeper than even religion gives it - and that in time it will be okay to return to faith in a naturalistic way that explains and supports the notion of God, and lets us return to the experience and life of faith in an authentic way.

Reminds me of my dad when he had skin cancer. Out of desperation after all the main stream medical treatments didn't work he went to a Marijuana dispensary. He got some cannabis oil, mixed it with some alovera and put it on the lesions. They were gone in six weeks, his doctor couldn't believe it.

Folks, is David telling you the truth about the facts? Consider the facts. See with your eyes, not your ears. TRUTH... Who favors Putin? Who favors Illegals over Black American Citizens? The Eye/Ear thing applies Trump and Republicans Sanctioned Putin Nord Stream 2 Gas Pipeline. Trump showed Anti Putin Biden and Democrats gave Putin a gift and Lifted those Sanctions right away. Biden showed Pro Putin Dems are lying and their voters don't know it or don't care Trump and Republicans Secured our Borders to Protect America Biden and Democrats immediately Opened Our Borders up to the entire world and Democrats are telling Black Americans to give up their Communities. They are giving away their Schools, Community Centers, Med Center, and $$$ to Illegals. WHY didn't Dems ever offer these FREE checks and FREE benefits to Black Americans? Democrat Governor Hochul is trying to give STATE JOBS to Illegals but didn't do this for Black American Citizens. (I think it was around 4,000 jobs all total) The Border Bill Dems are pushing will allow 35,000 Illegals per week. Over a million a yr. Trump and Republicans want to Close the Border again. So folks, check facts and see with your eyes, not your ears. Semper Fi USA

Awesome interview, David. Mr. Dennett is inspiring. I may as well be an atheist, but I'm not quite there yet. I long abandoned the notion that god is something that hears prayers, or is in any way capable of being something which can separately interact with humankind. If that kind of god exists, it must be "hiding somewhere in South America."

I was eleven years old when I realized religion isn’t real. “One Way” in the early 1960s in California was my whole life. I felt I had to be mistaken but I clearly wasn’t. It was terrifying for a child. But I forced myself to accept that I was living in a culture where almost everyone was living a lie. The ending of the remake of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” reminded me of my youth, hiding my truth. I didn’t dare tell anyone that I was an atheist until I got into the Army. Now I pretty much wear my reason proudly on my sleeve.

I had the luxury of being raised by an open-minded mother who just wanted me to be happy. I got to experience so many religions growing up and go with all my friends to their religious events and spaces. Because of this, I never believed in any of them. Not just one can be correct nor can they all.

The problem I have with religion and somewhat spirituality is that we are on one planet out of over 700 quintillion and out of them 50 sextillion are possibly inhabitable plus humans only existed for 0.002% of the universe and likely not going to last long with no get away planet within 63,000 years. If we were so important why would we be so significant

And if we are so significant, why is it that, even just being able to inhabit this blue dust spec in a relative infinity hostile to us, we can only live in 25% of this dust spec and at least not the entirety of it?

@@xelasomar4614 Exactly, just makes no sense. Plus don’t get me started on the we’re so so special even tho it’s almost impossible that life’s not on other planets out of the absurd amount of habitable planets yet we literally have no save as a species because we’re stuck here with no way of really expanding to another planet.

I hate when I tell people I'm agnostic and they say oh you're an atheist. No, I simply use the scientific method on religion. I don't know until it proves itself or reveals the great questions. It's good to look across all religions to form a hypothesis.
