Edmund would call for an IMMIGRATION REFERENDUM.

@DanHannanMEP Жыл бұрын
Depends which Edmund we're talking about. Edmund Burke, I'm pretty sure, would have disliked referendums. He might very well have taken the view that there had been too much immigration too quickly, but he'd want Parliament to address the problem. But Edmund Blackadder or Edmund from the Narnia stories? Who knows?

@@DanHannanMEP Other Edmunds perhaps had more practical experience of the dangers of mass foreign migration: Edmund the Martyr, Edmund I, Edmund Ironside, etc. What Burke would have made of the idea that the matter should reside exclusively at the discretion of a political order which has - with a resolution that it has shown in no other regard on its listless watch over the last 2 generations - pursued an extremity of policy seeking the revolutionary transformation of the ethnography of its own society, in the face of what it knows is general public disquiet and unease at its actions which it ignores or dismisses with disdain, is a more doubtful proposition Lord Hannan.

Done absolutely nothing? A really strange comment, but not an uncommon one levelled at people who dare to speak up and apply some principled and historically aware thinking to today's challenges. What exactly do you expect Hanna to "do", in addition to energetically bringing very useful insights and suggestions forward (apart from his Ukraine/Russia views, which I leave aside), as he has been doing for decades?

I would like to support “national conservatism” but have a major problem with these people, something along the lines; “fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me”. It all sounds so plausible, but these same people stayed very quite when it was impacting all of the rest of us and they only seem to now be doing something belatedly now it is clearly going to impact them. Having said that, I will try harder and really hope they mean what they are now saying, but I will not trust any of them ever again.

19:00 The free weekend is solely the achievement of trade unions. IMO Burke would have opposed them and Adam Smith would have been at least sceptical. The free weekend is of course now very much threatened by free markets, which according to Hannan were the ideals of Burke and Smith.

This man excoriates the EU for its lack of democracy and then accepts a peerage and sits in an unelected legislature. Oddly inconsistent. Does he only believe in democracy for other people, I wonder? All the Europeans I know are very patriotic and love their countries. They also almost without exception think the English ruling class are incredibly arrogant and ill-informed. What Europeans fear is nationalism, not patriotism. There were quite a few UKIP MEPs that fell short. I'm afraid I don't feel that Mr Hannan and I comprise a 'we'. His 'us' is pretty exclusive, I think you'll find. Mrs Thatcher only liked people who were 'one of us' and that was definitely a pretty distinct set of people that I'm sure didn't include members of trades unions, like me and millions of other workers. Some of these talks have been interesting and thoughtful. This one is tripe, I'm afraid. He could have added: 'And elevates the asset-rich and their children and other legatees above the worker.'

A good case in point. Britain first tried to make a multi-national state work but, when it became clear that neither side would accept it, it proposed a partition. Had its plan been accepted by the Palestinian leadership at the time, a great deal of pain and loss might have been averted. Even now, a two-state solution is the only viable answer.

@davidpaterson2309

“Socialists would be against competition between countries”. Rather depends what you mean by “socialists”. For decades, British socialists were very much protectionists and anti-foreign competition - their whole ethos was the protection of the British working class against anything that had the potential to undermine its power and earning ability. That was a thread all the way from Keir Hardie (a hero of the left) who campaigned against the importation of Polish miners in Scotland over a century ago, all the way through to Tony Benn and Jeremy Corbyn - both of whom regarded the EU as an anti democratic capitalist club and favoured a closed economy “socialism in one country” approach. And nationalism rarely results in a “free market between nations” - often quite the opposite because nationalism is, by definition, protective of the “nation-state” and therefore tends to the protectionist in economics and trade. You can see that in recent years - Brexit is essentially a nationalist movement and has resulted in eg more restrictions and bureaucracy on trade between the U.K. and its neighbours. Or think of Trump’s approach to NAFTA - America First does not equal “free market between nations”.

I’m not quite at 12:00, the first ten mins are better plug for Yoram Hazony’s brilliant book, The Virtue Of Nationalism, than Hazony himself has given (Hazony hasn’t even really tried as far as I can tell) but as for Ukraine and sovereignty, if Col Douglas MacGregor and Scott Ritter are correct, then I’m afraid Hannan is not merely wrong but gravely wrong, as are those in charge of our military and, doubtless, high ranking officials of the military. Did not Stalin try to extinguish the Orthodox Church? Why? Well it’s obvious... and yet, as far as I’m aware, Putin, himself far more convincingly Russian Orthodox than Joe Biden is Catholic, has promoted the Russian Orthodox and it flourishes. The west is degenerate and has lost the moral high ground.
