Maybe the Falcons can flip Pennix. That’s the thing. The Steelers and Falcons have insurance but the Steelers aren’t likely to need it. Other teams’ QBs might get injured. So, maybe they flip those QBs to other needy teams for multiple draft picks, especially Fields.

@@DeCurtaRican So draft a 2nd round QB in the top 10 because one day you might be able to trade him? That makes it sound even worse lol. What is the chance they get another top 10 pick in say 2 years of him riding the pine? (HInt: It's zero) The Steelers and Falcons situations couldn't be more different. Wilson cost $1.2 mil for one year and Fields was had for a 6th round pick. Cousins is getting $45mil/year over 4 years and Penix was a top 10 pick. Also, Fields was just on the trade market with several qb needy teams and the Bears got a single 6th round for him. How does his trade value go up as a 2nd string QB? I could see if he plays a lot and plays much better than he has at any point thus far but that is definitely a big if.

Trey Lance wasn't the issue as much as the fact that the Niners gave up 3 firsts to move up to get him. The Falcons did not give away 3 first round picks to get Penix, so this isn't even close to that.

The Falcons have picked at 8,8, and 4 the last 3 years, and not a single one of those years was there a QB they could've gotten that could have been a reliable starter, so I completely get why they felt like they wouldn't have an opportunity to get one in the next few years with Kirk at QB. This draft was probably their best chance if they really liked Penix (And other teams did as well, so they might not be wrong on that) My biggest issue is just that the Kirk contract has him as the starter for at least 3 years if they want to avoid 30+ million in dead-cap money. 2 years would've been a lot better.
@mattcarberry368
@mattcarberry368 Ай бұрын
nah the commitment to Kirk is solid for 2 years, but by year 3 of his deal his cap hit is more than his dead cap number and roster bonuses start to kick in which is a sure sign that's where the organization wants to start having exit strategies in place..... and i think for the final 2 years of his contract the combined dead cap would be something like $47M which these days isn't a big deal, with the cap rapidly rising every year and being able to spread it out, honestly it would barely be noticeable especially a few more years down the road then the caps gone up 3 more times lol....... they got him for 2 seasons and there's no reason they'd even have to start him next season if they don't want to

Look at it from a simple standpoint, you are protecting yourself whether it be to injury or poor performance because you can afford to. You don't spend $180 million and not expect to make the playoffs but if Cousins gets hurt or doesn't perform up to expectations you are protecting your opportunity to still be good by drafting Penix. How many teams can carry 2 good QBS at free agency market value. Answer=0! High draft choices are high value young controllable talent at bargain prices. Good for the Falcons for seeing the curve. Beat the system not repeat the system.

As a Packers fan, I maintain that the “GB Model” did not work. After drafting Love, Rodgers had 2 of his best years and was stopped in the NFC Championship game twice. What if we had drafted a first round weapon or run stopper instead of Love? Cost us 2 chances at a SB. It’s great to have Love now but it’s disingenuous to act like there wasn’t a significant opportunity cost associated with drafting Love. What say you Brockman?

I’m so fed up with people who are hating on the Falcons for drafting Penix (I’m not a Falcons fan). There is ONE irrefutable truth in the NFL: if your QB play sucks, so do you. The Falcons experienced that last year and decided to do something about it. Sure the pick slot and Kirk’s guaranteed money isn’t the perfect situation but life is never so linear. It’s a simple plan: Kirk plays for 2 years (if he can stay healthy and productive) and let Penix take the reins and they’ll be damn glad they drafted him when they did and not have to be desperate for a QB in the future. This move is a hell of a lot smarter than what teams have tried lately, like trading multiple 1st round picks for past-their-prime QBs whose own teams didn’t even want anymore (Russ, Deshaun). And who even cares about the “drama” in the locker room. Players are paid handsomely to play, not have a say in QB starter. It’s up to the coaches to sell the vision and unite the players in it.

Alex Smith had just taken KC to the playoffs in 2016, and they took Mahomes in the draft. They sat Mahomes, and Smith took them to the playoffs again. Atlanta saw a QB they love, they are paying a QB for two more years, and they have young talent they will need to pay soon. Cousins plays next year. If they think Penix is ready in 2025, they will look to trade Cousins. If not, they keep his the backup and cut him after the season. They want to compete for the championship, and not just for a playoff spot.

The Falcons are brilliant for drafting Penix Jr. If Cousins works out... the Falcons won't have a pick in the top half of the 1st round (to replace Kirk) until Cousins is gone and the team is trash again and you HOPE someone who fits your team and scheme is available in the next draft. If Cousins doesn't work out or gets hurt again (achilles injuries are no joke and can affect a player for the rest of their career), they have Penix in house and ready to go. Anyone who doesn't like this pick, doesn't understand how the NFL works.... and that applies even to the SO-CALLED insiders and experts.

This is crazy! People are acting like Cousins, who's done very little in the playoffs & only been to them a couple of times, is a sure fire winner in Atl. Nobodies really talking about the injury component to this. Last year in the NFL over half the teams had a backup make multiple starts & play critical minutes. Backups in Indy & Cincinnati almost got their teams to the playoffs. QB's are diva's, so obviously the Falcons front office can't come out & say in the press: "we're not sure if Cousins can make it through an entire season, so Penix is our backup plan if Cousins can't get us where we wanna go." This isn't hard to understand, everyone's over thinking it, QB is the single most important position in all of sports... without a quality QB you're not winning, _period._ So having a very capable backup is being prudent, regardless of the cost especially when everyone keeps saying Atlanta is ready to win now PS: everything Daniel says against Penix can be turned around & used against Cousins. Cousins has no equity in Atl, so the only thing the Falcons owe him is his money. They don't owe him the respect to quit looking for a franchise QB. It's on Cousins to prove that was a bad draft pick, if he flops or gets hurt it'll look like a great pick. Also if Cousins really cares about his new team he'll be happy to help Penix learn how to properly prepare for NFL games & teach him how to read NFL defenses

@@user-tr4jj9pt7x Well the Falcons are desperate just to have a wining season which is why they paid Kirk. So it's really not about the Amount, just watch what DAK will be asking for and getting in the Free market are even if he resigns with Jerry's World. Starting QB at ridiculous prices is just a sign of the times. Which is only going to get worse. The biggest failures on most teams is NOT drafting potential replacements when the chance actually do present themselves.

This has nothing to do with Cousins or Penix. What has raised a lot of questions is the Falcons gifting 100 million guaranteed to Cousins and then drafting Penix with the statement that he is the franchise QB. If Cousins had come in a much lower amount, or had structured a contract with exit clauses w/o this much of a cap hit, most analysts would have been fine with the pick.

If there is a scenario where it's a disaster in Atlanta can DJ admit there is also the possibility that it works out. Could it not work out that Cousins plays well for two years where there is no dip and Penix steps in year 3 and the Falcons stay ahead of the QB game. I think Arthur Blank saw what happened when Matt Ryan aged out and the team wasn't competitive. He wants to avoid non competitive years to give him a shot at winning a SB.
@eincan1313
@eincan1313 Ай бұрын
Anything is possible., it could work out. The issue for me is Atl has a win now QB and a defense with holes. The other thing is it really important to fully maximize the rookie contract and now you have two less years and less time to evaluate before the 5th year option. But you are right, none of us knows what will happen and I think if they recently didnt sign Cousins or maybe took Penix later in the 1st there would be less noise about this.
